UK date & time formatting

I currently have a column of UK date and time values in the form of 14/06/2005  17:00:00. In order to create a Pivot Table followed by a Pivot Chart that analyses the sales data by month and year only, I need to loose both the day and time sections of the field. I can do this by DigDB>>Column>>Split, but the resulting month and year fields are now not recognised as dates. I've tried re-formatting them as such but can't get the darned things to work. Any ideas anyone?
