A colleague sent me the following snippet from a Brisbane Times article
on Blackle, a customized version of Google which not only saves
megawatt-hours but is easier on the eyes.

A new, customised version of Google has appeared on the internet, promising
to save thousands of watts of power by changing the background colour of
the
world's most popular search engine.
For all intents and purposes, Blackle.com is exactly the same as Google
- it just
features a purely black background and light grey text instead of Google's
traditional white background.
Blackle's Australian creators explained their site was a response to a
blog by
environmentalist Mark Onkkush, who estimated up to 3000 megawatt-hours
a year could be saved if Google's display was switched to black.
