Total Open StationDear all,
this e-mail is to inform you about a new software project that I started writing recently. The project is called Total Open Station. From the README: """ I started writing this program for making it easier to manage different models of total stations in a GNU/Linux environment. However, I try to develop following standards, so porting to Windows or Mac shouldn't be difficult. Every model has its own quirks. So, I decided to use a modular structure, that is based on an abstract interface. Each time a new model is added to the program, you create a new instance of this base class, with all needed data. """ Total Open Station is developed with the Python programming language. For those who are interested in participating the project website is at http://sharesource.org/project/totalopenstation/ The (few lines of) code that I have written as of today are here in a Mercurial repository: http://hg.sharesource.org/totalopenstation/ Let me know if you want to help - even a test with your total station is welcome! Re: Total Open StationWe're interested...
Don't suppose you want to add it to the Open Archaeology Launchpad site? You can put a sub-project of it forward as a Google Summer of Code idea then! Hi Chris, it would be nice to have this project included in Summer of Code: https://answers.launchpad.net/openarchaeologygsoc/+question/27275 Are you willing/available for mentoring? And, most important: how many different models of total station can you provide? :-) For now I have no projects for a GUI and I'll focus on: 1. serial connection parameters and communication 2. different data formats and data retrieval It's going to be modular enough to allow different kinds of output: DXF, GML, KML, GeoJSON... which other features would be a must for you? Re: Total Open StationI'd have to ask on features (unless another OA staffer is on the list and has ideas?) as its not my area - although file compatibility with DWG using the (closed but free to use) Open Design Alliance libraries would be a nice option.
I can mentor on the general project/problem solving side and could get a more specialist member of staff (Ben Ducke) to mentor too. On how many models of Total Station, again I'd have to ask for details, but definitely several different ones in the various offices. Re: Total Open StationGratuitous blog spamming aside, Luca Bianconi has just helped me get
Total Open Station on the Openmoko platform: http://blogs.thehumanjourney.net/finds/entry/2 "The FreeRunner has a USB host port; you simply plug your phone into the Total Station, download the data and send it over the mobile network to our survey database in the office. No computers, no messing about, just data from the field to the office ASAP. We don't have to worry about laptops and the like; everyone will have the tools necessary to get the job done." Thanks to all involved for a really exciting piece of software, my mind's racing about the future possibilities of it. Joseph, that's really good news. When I first thought about a cross-platform application I didn't think about _so_ many platforms ;-) Now my question is: what is your Total Station model? Can you provide sample data so we can write a parser module for it? Thanks, Steko -- Mailing list info: http://lists.linux.it/listinfo/archaeology |
