TikiWiki as CRM

Hi all,

An important feature missing in TikiWiki, is a CRM (Community Relation Manager). At the moment, we have a basic contact manager, but it is too basic to function as a CRM. Some things I miss are the possibility to group people, link them to an organisation, ...

To get the CRM-feature into TikiWiki, I see two possible ways:
  1. Rewrite the contacts-feature into a real CRM
  2. Make a 3rd party CRM work with TikiWiki
I'd like to hear your opinions on this, but before that, I have some pro's and con's listed here:

Rewrite
Pro
  • There is allready a startingpoint with the contacts module
  • It will totally fit into TikiWiki, not only the functionalities, but also code writing and philosophy
Contra
  • It takes a lot of time and resources to develop the additional features of the CRM
  • Do we have enough expertise in our community to develop all the needed features?
  • It will be a large project next to TikiWiki
3rd Party CRM

I assume we only look at open source PHP/MySQL CRM's.

Pro
  • Feature are being developed and maintained for us
  • All features are ready to include
  • We won't have a lot of work to keep the CRM up to date, bugfixes and extras are developed for us (see the first pro)
  • TikiWiki will be more visible in the OS community, because we will have to make connections with the community of the chosen CRM

Contra
  • We don't have the development in our own hands
  • It will take time and resources to get the CRM integrated
Imho, we should use a good 3rd party CRM. Since a while, I use CiviCRM and I like it very much!

I hope I get many replies, so the opinion of the list (part of the community) will be known. I'll post this also on the forum.

hi,

i'm not sure what is better but i vote for rewrite (developing own) than
relying on 3rd party (which would be hard to maintain compatibility with)

we could only make an interaction api with 3rd party software because i
guess it would be hard to find nice CRM which could be integrated and
distributed in TikiWiki with compatible license to LGPL

(imho CiviCRM is not LGPL compatible, see: http://civicrm.org/licensing)

I did not change my mind :-)
Use trackers
Surely some tracker configuration / profile to add  to have a one click
installation
But trackers are very powerful

Hi,

I also prefer to have our own code instead of integrating another
software. This is mainly because I prefer less functionnalities that are
more integrated with Tiki (with perms, categories, tags, look, and so
on...). Deep integration with another software and its evolutions is
really a pain to maintain...

So, improving or rewriting contacts is the way I would have choosed.

I like this option too even if I know it's a bit more complicate.

koen,

i've looked at civicrm too and it has a lot of nice functionality. I
agree with Sylvie that trackers can do much of the "information
management" that is involved with CRM, and other features like
newsletters, internal tasks and messaging exist, but better
integration would be nice

can you explain a little the featureset you would want from the CRM?

Hi,

The features I think are very usefull for us, and therefor I wish to implement are:
  • Connect contacts wit relations
  • Group them in groups, households, organisations
  • Activities: Log all the contact you have with the community (e-mail, ...)
  • Smart groups: A group, containing all the contacts with a sudden search criteria (living place, ...)
  • Import / Export: Through Vcard you can import and export contacts
  • Mailinglists: Send mass mailing to a (smart) group
  • Memberships: Keep track on memberships
  • Event managment: Organise the subscribtion and payment into events
These things are, needed to get people to choose TikiWiki for CRM.

Deep integration with another software and its evolutions is
really a pain to maintain...

CiviCRM is very good at integration, they support Drupal and Joomla integration. Off course, TW isn't Drupal of Joomla, but it gives an idea.

If there is a real project needing CRM, I will most likely build some
CRM inside TIki, rather than integrate with CiviCRM, unless the
project customer wants CiviCRM by itself anyway, or already has
CiviCRM.

The problem with the CiviCRM integration approach is it results in a
lot of duplicate functionality (which exist in both Tiki and CiviCRM).

Having said this, I note that CiviCRM has a rather comprehensive
integration API, which if you only use that for integration, you
should't have licensing issues as the packages remain separate (I am
not a lawyer disclaimer applies here).
