>
> Hi:
>
>
> Let me share first impressions regarding building ts 2.2 on old hardware (a
> p2 under DSL)
>
>
> No big problems on build process.
>
>
> Of course is time consuming..................... (FYI 10' aprox. for first
> built round) but it's fine for our purpose
> Only wget external package issue as explained on other topic (solved with
> manual download required app)
>
> On the same pc we are able to evaluate ts built prototype using qemu.
>
> Let me mention it's awesome the long time to entire ts startup process (20'
> aprox)
> sure we don't expect quick reaction on our outdated piece of hardware,
> please explain me some points:
>
> Is it normal 2.2 takes so long to startup? including X and desktop on
> session_0.
> (Please note, we managed to get 2 or 3 minutes in older ts versions 2.0x and
> 2.1x.)

No, I do all of my testing on a via 533MHz box and it takes < 2mins
into icewm.

It sounds like it is probably hanging on network access.

>
> FYI our build image only use vesa module ssh lpr rdesktop, icewm, common
> pci/isa nics, keymaps-en_us, keymaps-es, no sound, no samba, nxclient only,
> xtdesk.
>
> Any hints or tips to reduce startup time will be apreciated. Please note we
> plan to use ONLY old pc's clients.

2.2 uses a 2.6 series kernel (which is bigger), and probably slower,
but 20mins shows a problem.

For debugging remove the splash=silent kernel parameter and change
console=ttyS3 to console=tty0.

See where it is stalling (possibly it is also having some issue with
one of the drivers). Also look in /var/log/boot.log to see any errors
(other than info on drivers loaded/unloaded) and possibly in
/var/log/messages to see if there is anything funny happening in the
kernel.

The other thing to look for is if it is becoming memory constrained.
The default allocation of file system (ram disk) vs available memory
for running the kernel and programs is 50%. This can be manipulated
(this is available in 2.3, but we can always apply the same patch if
needed).

Lets do some debugging and see.....

Trevor B

>
> Thanks in advance for your cooperation.
>
> Regards
>
>
> Carlos

>
> Hi Trevor,
>
> Just seen this reply (I think it's appeared under a different post !). I
> probably wasn't clear when I tried to explain my original diagnosis so
> apologies for that. UDev does detect the actual card reader being plugged
> in (and creates each relevant block device in /dev - i.e. a four slot reader
> creates sdb, sdc, sdd and sde). The problem is UDev failed to then detect a
> card being plugged into any of the slots and there by creating the relevant
> device under /dev and run the usb.sh script.

OK, I had probably forgotten that part.. :-) It sounds familiar, I had
just remembered the no trigger, but it applies to the card, not the
device. In my case the device doesn't show either.

>
> As previously mentioned I found that I could force UDev to rescan the USB
> bus that the card reader was on by attempting to mount each block device
> originally created for the card reader, for example mount /dev/sdb /mnt/tmp.
> Although this will obviously fail it triggered a scan of UDev which then
> detected the newly inserted card and there by created the device etc. After
> a lot of work (and complaints from users :o) ) I created the script I placed
> in the other post which seems to work quite nicely, I created UDev rules so
> that I knew where each card type would mount, this way I could script the
> mapping of client drives for our Citrix users.
>
> I think you're absoloutely right that it's something the newer kernel will
> probably tackle a lot better (since my Ubuntu workstation works quite
> happily with cards being hot plugged into the card reader), in the meantime
> the script is doing the job. I really appreciate the time you've spent
> looking into this though, I thought I'd share my script etc in case anyone
> else needed a workaround (or could suggest how to do it even smarter !!).

Really appreciate the workaround (and insight).

For standard naming did you try any of the new USB_MOUNT_DIR &
USB_MOUNT_USELABEL parameters? I use USB_MOUNT_DIR=/media &
USB_MOUNT_USELABEL=Yes to mount all of my usb sticks etc. under /media
as the label on the device.

With your new udev rules, you could trigger a different script to
create the mount point for the devices, but NOT mount them (and see if
we get a trigger when a card is installed).

I'll also try and check what is happening with the newer
kernel/drivers & both mdev & udev (mdev is the busybox alternative to
udev, much smaller, but probably limited - but works fine for all of
my existing kit).

Trevor B

>
> Thanks again !
>>> I've checked on Knoppix and it is trying to use the ahci driver, looking
>>> Thinstation I've got this enabled so I'm guessing I need to get a more up
>>> to
>>> date version of the driver ?
>>>
>> Probably. It may also be a very old version of udev (but more likely the
>> driver).
>>
>> I was trying to get out an updated kernel for 2.2, but I ran into a few
>> difficulties (if I add in supermount I seem to get a corrupted kernel,
>> so am assuming that it is a bad patch...).
>>
>> If I manage to get it out, it may help.
>>
>> I haven't answered much on this as I'm still a little confused.
>> Originally I thought that our debugging showed that the kernel didn't
>> kick of any hotplug events for these card readers, hence I stopped
>> looking at udev (if it doesn't get called it's unlikely to be able to
>> respond correctly). I guess that diagnosis was incorrect.
>>
>> We'll see what we get with a newer kernel (and possibly updated udev).
>> Unfortunately the only multi-card reader I have doesn't seem to do
>> anything....
>>
>>> >> I'm currently testing our Thinstation build (v2.2.2) with a new Dell
>>> >> Optiplex FX160 we've got in, after updating to the latest Broadcom
>>> driver
>>> >> everything is working great, apart from one minor issue. The device
>>> does
>>> >> not have a hard disk but instead is using a 512MB NVRAM drive (more
>>> than
>>> >> enough for Thinstation !), our build boots absoloutely fine off this
>>> (we
>>> >> Knoppix CD I have it can see the disk fine (it shows as /dev/sda1).
>>> >>
>>> >> If I was to guess I'd assume its because there's another module (or
>>> few
>>> >> !)
>>> >> that need updating since this is a new piece of kit. If it's any help
>>> I
>>> >> was
>>> >> able to extract this information from /proc/scsi/scsi when I booted in
>>> >> Knoppix :
>>> >>
>>> >> Attached devices:
>>> >
>>> > It seems to indicate that it's an ATA drive. Have you tried any of the
>>> > sata drivers?
>>> >
>>> > I'd try ata_piix first (I believe that this is a generic intel driver).
>>> > Later kernels have a more 'generic' driver, but 2.2.2 is still on
>>> > 2.6.16.5. If you can see what driver is being used in Knoppix, it will
>>> > help.
>>> >
>>> > One of the dilemas of trying to build so it will fit on old 386's with
>>> > 8Mb RAM or the latest & greatest with SAS & other drives (although
>>> > probably a little bit of an overkill for a thinclient :-)
>>> >
>>> > Good Luck
>>> > Trevor B
>>> >>
>>> >> Although this issue doesn't stop us using Thinstation with these
>>> devices
>>> >> it
>>> >> prevents us from using the HDUpdate feature or accessing the disk from
>>> >> Samba
>>> >> which are both a massive help due to our large number of clients. If

Hello Juan,

I have tried your patches with an i810 system and still cannot get a 1440x900 monitor to work.

The 2 packages are the only ones included in for video, and I can see that they are loaded, but I still get "No mode of that name" in the xorg log.

I have tried letting it auto detect and manually entering the resolution.

Is there something else I can try?

Thanks

Hi.

As I said one week ago, here are my 2 packages to support widescreen
monitors with intel 915 graphics drivers. The packages are:

z-915resolution: This package patch the 915 Bios to put 1440x900 and
1680x1050 modes on it.
z-xorg6-intel: This package have the Xorg 7.1 intel driver that supports
i740, i810, i915, i945, i950 and new models of GMA graphics like GMA3000
and GMA3100 (but the last need also a kernel patch to intel-agp module).

You can use only the first package and play with modelines, or use the
two packages and let the driver to autoconfigure. In this way, it's
important to comment all manual Xorg settings in thinstation.conf
packages (resolution, refresh, etc). I tried all with TS2.3 and it works
fine with a 1680x1050 20" monitor, 1440x900 19" and 1280x1024 17" (4:3)
monitor.

Notes: The packages "superseed" some core TS files (/etc/init.d/x &
xorf.conf template). Because it, the name of packages begins with "z-"
to be sure that the patched files merge in the image at last stages. The
patchs are -ignoreABI option in Xorg to let the intel 7.1 driver to load
on 6.9. Another patch is the comment o Xinerama in xorg.conf template
because this driver fails with this option. So this packages aren´t
xinerama compatible.

To use the packages, only add "package z-915resolution" and "package
z-xorg6-intel" to build.conf, before gunzip and untar in packages dirs.

The packages are here:

http://www.uco.es/~tonin/z-xorg6-intel.tar.gz
http://www.uco.es/~tonin/z-915resolution.tar.gz

Let me know any problems.
Hi:

Let me share first impressions regarding building ts 2.2 on old hardware (a p2 under DSL)

No big problems on build process.

Of course is time consuming..................... (FYI 10' aprox. for first built round) but it's fine for our purpose
Only wget external package issue as explained on other topic (solved with manual download required app)

On the same pc we are able to evaluate ts built prototype using qemu.

Let me mention it's awesome the long time to entire ts startup process (20' aprox)
sure we don't expect quick reaction on our outdated piece of hardware, please explain me some points:

Is it normal 2.2 takes so long to startup? including X and desktop on session_0.
(Please note, we managed to get 2 or 3 minutes in older ts versions 2.0x and 2.1x.)

FYI our build image only use vesa module ssh lpr rdesktop, icewm, common pci/isa nics, keymaps-en_us, keymaps-es, no sound, no samba, nxclient only, xtdesk.

Any hints or tips to reduce startup time will be apreciated. Please note we plan to use ONLY old pc's clients.

Thanks in advance for your cooperation.

Hi Trevor,

Just seen this reply (I think it's appeared under a different post !). I probably wasn't clear when I tried to explain my original diagnosis so apologies for that. UDev does detect the actual card reader being plugged in (and creates each relevant block device in /dev - i.e. a four slot reader creates sdb, sdc, sdd and sde). The problem is UDev failed to then detect a card being plugged into any of the slots and there by creating the relevant device under /dev and run the usb.sh script.

As previously mentioned I found that I could force UDev to rescan the USB bus that the card reader was on by attempting to mount each block device originally created for the card reader, for example mount /dev/sdb /mnt/tmp. Although this will obviously fail it triggered a scan of UDev which then detected the newly inserted card and there by created the device etc. After a lot of work (and complaints from users :o) ) I created the script I placed in the other post which seems to work quite nicely, I created UDev rules so that I knew where each card type would mount, this way I could script the mapping of client drives for our Citrix users.

I think you're absoloutely right that it's something the newer kernel will probably tackle a lot better (since my Ubuntu workstation works quite happily with cards being hot plugged into the card reader), in the meantime the script is doing the job. I really appreciate the time you've spent looking into this though, I thought I'd share my script etc in case anyone else needed a workaround (or could suggest how to do it even smarter !!).

Thanks again !
> date version of the driver ?
>

It was really against the USB issue, not the NVRAM one.

In the case of NVRAM, I think the achi driver is a helper driver and
there was probably some other driver that specifically supports that
device.
> >
>
>
>
> Originally I thought that our debugging showed that the kernel didn't
> kick of any hotplug events for these card readers, hence I stopped
> looking at udev (if it doesn't get called it's unlikely to be able to
> date version of the driver ?
>

> >> Hi
> >>
> >> I'm currently testing our Thinstation build (v2.2.2) with a new Dell
> >> Optiplex FX160 we've got in, after updating to the latest Broadcom driver
> >> everything is working great, apart from one minor issue. The device does
> >> not have a hard disk but instead is using a 512MB NVRAM drive (more than
> >> enough for Thinstation !), our build boots absoloutely fine off this (we
> >> boot from the Hard Disk), however once Thinstation is loaded if I look in
> >> /dev I cannot see a device for the hard disk. Oddly enough if I boot
> >> with a
> >> Knoppix CD I have it can see the disk fine (it shows as /dev/sda1).
> >>
> >> If I was to guess I'd assume its because there's another module (or few
> >> !)
> >> that need updating since this is a new piece of kit. If it's any help I
> >> was
> >> able to extract this information from /proc/scsi/scsi when I booted in
> >> Knoppix :
> >>
> >> Attached devices:
> >> Host: scsi0 Channel: 00 Id: 00 Lun: 00
> >> Vendor: ATA Model: 512MB ATA Flash Rev: AD B
> >> Type:   Direct-Access                    ANSI SCSI revision: 05
> >
> > It seems to indicate that it's an ATA drive. Have you tried any of the
> > sata drivers?
> >
> > I'd try ata_piix first (I believe that this is a generic intel driver).
> > Later kernels have a more 'generic' driver, but 2.2.2 is still on
> > 2.6.16.5. If you can see what driver is being used in Knoppix, it will
> > help.
> >
> > One of the dilemas of trying to build so it will fit on old 386's with
> > 8Mb RAM or the latest & greatest with SAS & other drives (although
> > probably a little bit of an overkill for a thinclient :-)
> >
> > Good Luck
> > Trevor B
> >>
> >> Although this issue doesn't stop us using Thinstation with these devices
> >> it
> >> prevents us from using the HDUpdate feature or accessing the disk from
> >> Samba
> >> which are both a massive help due to our large number of clients. If
> >> anyone
> >> can point me in the right direction I'd be hugely grateful as I'm stuck
> >> as
> >> what to do next.
> >>

One important observation we've made over the last day or so ! We found using wild cards for our card reader models (i.e. *SH*) clashed with some other scsi devices causing some devices to assume the wrong name. For this reason we're now creating a rule for each individual model (with the full model in the rule) to ensure we catch things correctly !
<quote author="Dan Burns">
Hi

I've managed to find a nice work around for this issue, we now have USB Cards mounting and unmounting successfully 100% of the time. Although this is not a true fix I'm posting it so that it hopefully helps out anyone looking for a workaround to the problem. Please note I'm something of a newbie to Linux and scripting so I've no doubt there are far smarter ways of doing what I've put together (so any suggestions are most welcome !). Firstly I created a few new rules in packages/base/etc/udev/rules.d/10-udev.rules, I added the following lines just before the #USB Keys section of the file :

#USB Card Readers
BUS=="scsi", SYSFS{model}="*SD*", NAME="card_sd"
BUS=="scsi", SYSFS{model}="*CF*", NAME="card_cf"
BUS=="scsi", SYSFS{model}="*SM*", NAME="card_sm"
BUS=="scsi", SYSFS{model}="*MS*", NAME="card_ms"
BUS=="scsi", SYSFS{model}="*COMBO*", NAME="card_sd"

This basically ensures that each slot in the card reader is created with a consistent name meaning I always know exactly what mount point to map each Citrix Client Drive to later. I built these rules based on UDEV logs from various card readers we use, we did find a few 'cheaper' card readers that this didn't work with simply because they showed their model as something useless like STORAGE DEVICE, we simply scrapped these. Now with my UDEV rules in place I created the following script, I had to design this so that it would always ensure a card was removed once unplugged, this is where I'm sure my script logic can be much improved so forgive any silly mistakes !! I created a script called packages/base/etc/usbreader.sh, it looks as follows :

#!/bin/sh
# Created by Dan Burns - 12th Nov 2008
# This script has been created as a 'workaround' due to the fact that the current Thinstation kernel cannot
# intercept and handle hotplug events for USB Cards
# Create a variable for each card type that a USB Device may appear on
while [ 1 ]
do
card1=card_sd
card2=card_cf
card3=card_sm
card4=card_ms
# Create a temporary location upon which we will 'dummy' mount each block device in order to force a UDev re-scan of bus
mkdir /mnt/tmp
# Loop 4 times (1 for each card type that will potentially be assigned to a block device)
for i in 1 2 3 4
do
  umount /mnt/tmp
  # Create paths based on current card type/partition that will be used by script
  strshortpath=`eval echo "/mnt/usbdevice/"$\card$i`
  strdevpath=`eval echo "/dev/"$\card$i`
  strpath=$strshortpath
  strfulldevpath=$strdevpath
  # Start by attempting to create a flag file on each existing mount point, this is to check if it is still accessible
  if [ `touch $strpath/chkusbaccess.tst 2> /dev/null; echo "$?"` != 0 ] ; then
    # If flag file cannot be created attempt to remove the mount point
    rmdir $strpath
    # If cannot simply remove directory then unmount and remove
    if [ `echo "$?"` != 0 ] ; then
      umount $strpath
      if [ `echo "$?"` != 0 ] ; then
        umount -l $strpath
      fi
      rmdir $strpath
    fi
  else
    # If flag file was created remove the flag
    rm $strpath/chkusbaccess.tst
    # Next verify that mount point isn't simply empty due to a failed unmount, first check if directory is empty
    if [ "`ls -A $strpath`" = "" ] ; then
      # If empty verify that device is no longer connected by attempting to mount it
      if [ `mount $strfulldevpath $strpath 2> /dev/null; echo "$?"` != 0 ] ; then
        # If mount fails we know device is not present so clean up mount point
        rmdir $strpath
        if [ `echo "$?"` != 0 ] ; then
          umount $strpath
          rmdir $strpath
        fi
      fi
    fi
  fi
  # Now attempt to mount any new devices, mount each block device to force a udev rescan
  mount $strdevpath /mnt/tmp
  # Next, check if mount point was created by device itself failed to mount
  if [ -d $strpath ] ; then
  # If the mount point exists, check if directory is empty
    if [ "`ls -A $strpath`" = "" ] ; then
      # If mount point is indeed empty then attempt to mount device
      mount $strfulldevpath $strpath
    fi
  fi
done
sleep 2
done

Now I have my script I added the following line to packages/base/etc/thinstation.init to run the script at startup :

/etc/usbreader.sh 2> /dev/null &

This ensures the script runs in the background, the WHILE loop in the script ensures it loops infinitely. Thats it, once built we found USB Cards appearing in the Citrix session in a matter of seconds, removal takes longer as it often has to wait for the system to realise the card is no longer in use (hence the drawn out process to remove in the script). I also added a CASE statement into packages/base/etc/udev/scripts/usb.sh to ensure that any other USB storage devices always mounted under /mnt/usbdevice/usb_pen, this way I could ensure a consistent client drive letter for these too regardless of the device and PC it was plugged in.

Obviously this script works for our environment but please do ensure you test it first if you do opt to use it !! Any feedback is much appreciated, I've no doubt in future versions of Thinstation this won't be needed any way !

Hope this helps !

We're currently using Thinstation 2.2.2 and I have been testing using USB Pens and Card Readers, these are made accessible to users via a Samba server on each client. We then use a simple script to map the drive for users in Citrix.

I have noticed an issue whereby in order for the USB Card Readers to be accessible we need to power on the Thinstation and let it boot up, the Card Reader then needs to be plugged in with a memory card already inserted. If we allow the Thinstation to boot up with the Card Reader already connected and then insert a memory card into the reader once the user has logged on etc it never seems to mount the USB device. This presents an issue for us as the users typically have card readers plugged into the back of their PC's and simply insert Memory cards as and when they need them, if they need to unplug the card reader, insert the memory card, then plug the reader back in each time they will be rather unhappy.

Is this a limitation of Linux that causes this issue or am I missing something, I'm hoping there is a way for the card readers to automatically mount new cards without the need to disconnect and re-connect the reader each time.

Thanks in advance
OK, I just realised what's wrong.

The LiveCD Basic does NOT include ica.....

The LiveCD Desktop does. So I can only assume that you used the desktop
version for those that worked and the basic version for the one that
didn't....
>
Oddly enough if I boot with a
> Knoppix CD I have it can see the disk fine (it shows as /dev/sda1).
>
> If I was to guess I'd assume its because there's another module (or few !)
> that need updating since this is a new piece of kit. If it's any help I was
> able to extract this information from /proc/scsi/scsi when I booted in
>

Good Luck
Trevor B
>
> Although this issue doesn't stop us using Thinstation with these devices it
> prevents us from using the HDUpdate feature or accessing the disk from Samba
> which are both a massive help due to our large number of clients. If anyone
> can point me in the right direction I'd be hugely grateful as I'm stuck as
> what to do next.
>
> Thanks in advance !

Good Luck
>
>
> Thanks in advance !
> hello again,
>
> i have a problem with one computer
>
> when i boot the computer with the Thinstation-2.2.1-LiveCD.basic all drivers
> are loaded but during
>
> Intialiazing ro0 packages ...
> profile_setup
>
> it loads very slow. My presumption is that the thinstation.conf.user doesn't
> load.
>
> When the loading is finished the replimenu 0.9 comes where i can select
> e.g. terminal, vnc session etc. But not the Citrix session.

What happens when you select the Citrix session?

You'll have to do a little diagnosing. From Replimenu press ALT+f2 to
go to a console, press enter and then log in as root with a password
of pleasechangeme (or whatever you changed it to).

more /var/log/boot.log
It will show you if it could find your thinstation.conf.user file and
will show any errors when the citrix session was selected.

Trevor B

>
> on the other four computers i tested it successfully i can connect
> automatically to a Citrix Session without problems.
>
> The computer is a Maxdata Favorit 1000I with a Asus P5VDC-TVM TE mainbord
> which shows the replimenu.
>
>
> Where could be the problem that thinstation doesn't connect to the Citrix
> Session automatically (Autostart is on)?
>
