Gear:
Boots - Side B-Ones, scratched/scuffed did a great job.
Gloves - A* SP1's (? Race model that sells for around $90)  worked great, small tear at the bottom of both palms.  Could feel in my palms that they had impact.
Jacket - Protect, got at Loudoun back in '01 maybe.  Never seen it else where.  Leather, full perf.  Looks like it got dirty.  Held up incredibly.  Big thanks to Lizzy, who sewed armor in it about 4 years ago.  Finally got to use it.
Helmet - HJC AC11, 3 small scratched areas, did it's thing.  From where the scratches were, a 1/2 helmet actually would've protected me.  I definately felt safer sliding w/ something between my face and the street though.
Old Navy khakis - Ripped right through, I dont' recommend for motorcycle use.

Yikes! I hope you're OK.

I can relate to the pants thing. I did a mild getoff on a patch of ice many
years ago. I put my right knee down on the pavement and my Levi's looked
like someone took a razor blade to them right across the knee area. My long
johns underneath were kind of shredded and my kneecap had a half dollar
sized road rash. Nothing else was more than scuffed. Leather boots, gloves,
jacket plus full face helmet protected everything else.

[Dave]  Thanks for the reminder and I'm glad you're ok.  Gear is expendable
and sometimes, especially in the case of a helmet, it's doing it's job
correctly by becoming useless.  I took a spill in March and smacked a really
expensive Arai corsair into the pavement.  Were it not for the helmet, it
would've been the side of my face and forehead.  The helmet easily survived
intact, but that would've hurt.  My gloves - scuffed only, no tears.  Lee
parks deerskin.  I got a really bad contusion on my right hand from impact.
LP are not armored in any way.  Sidi b2's fared ok except for ripping out
the toe guard.  F*ck them.  8 weeks and they couldn't send me that f*ing
anchor.  Several requests ( Motonation's fault, I hope they go bankrupt ).

Minivans.  They should be rounded up and scrapped for salvage material.
Heal fast and good luck w/ the bike.

99% of the time I ride in jeans and have motorcross  knee protectors on,
they cover
the shin, knee, and halfway up the thigh (the version I have).   Seems like
a good
insurance policy on a compramise to wearing regular pants.  Fortunately in
my years
of wearing such, I can't recall a time using them.   A buddy of mine did
send himself
into the grassy area off an exit ramp. First thing he said was "Glad I had
my kneepads on".

Then there was a woman on a local dual sport type list and showed her knee
damage.
In a street accident, the bike was fine.. but her knee required surgery. Not
cool. IIRC
she was down for quite a while, huge interuption in her life, due to knee
damage.

So to all you smart enough to wear full face helmets but wear pants like me,
I highly
recommend the knee protection too.  They're making the protection less bulky
and
it can be worn under the pants. I got the ones that go halfway up the thighs
because
I always have this idea in the back of my mind that when my bike hits
something
i'll fly forward and my knees will hit the bars.. and probably in that lower
thigh area.

I remember one time years ago i did a front wheel lock up on some leaves and
went
face planted sliding forwards.. without a full face helmet I'd be a lot
uglier than I already am.

Good grief, Rich is riding around pants-less, and Danny is talking
about wearing kneepads and telling us that Coleman's is giving him a
sore ass. Not sure DC cycles is going to make it past the corporate
filters for much longer!

Seriously folks--Rich, heal well. Too bad the ignoramus in the van
will probably never get her (?) day in court. And yes I plead guilty
to riding around the city in jeans. Even at 25 mph sliding on the
asphalt in jeans would really hurt.

Thats the problem today, everyone's always woried about corperate and
lawyers..
now our hamburgers have warning labels on them.

From my experiences i've seen jeans have about a 50% chance of being
"good enough" protection.  I'm sure they fair a lot better than slacks.
