The Keyword DONT

A pattern is not matching if it contains the keyword DONT.

Is it a reserved word or something? How do I know what to use and what not to use while typing the text for patterns.

I also need a pattern like "select one from the group (a,b,d,c)!" how do I handle the paranthesis and exclamation characters.
