An extra button seems to be a great idea, but making it a default option will
not assure accuracy in search results. Actually I don't know the situation for
the LOC or other sources, but in the case of the Italian National Libray there
are many entries for a certain ISBN code, due to the fact that reprints are
different editions but they share the same ISBN code.

Part of the problem with changing the defaults is that it isn't always
obvious what the defaults at the time of import are unless you double
back and check. So, in this particular work-flow, we're importing a box
of books at a time (usually around 20-30 books), and having to change
the defaults for such small sets every few minutes leads to very human
mistakes like forgetting to update the default box number, or changing
the wrong field by accident.

I think you're right about the problem of adding it in the search
dialog. I don't think that's really the right answer. Really, in my case
it's a storage-location issue: items in a collection ought to have a
location (a box, a shelf, or a room). More generally, items in a
sub-collection ought to have shared defaults of some sort, and a way to
select those non-title specific defaults during import.

I think the real issue is that I can't create an "empty box" into which
I can then add items. From a GUI perspective, I have what appear to be
folders in the left panel; the folders are really just field groups
created by selecting "box" in the drop-down box. If these were real
folders, I could select the folder, and then right-click to add new
entries into that folder.

I understand that may not be practical from a coding perspective. I'm
really just talking about the interface issue here, which is that I
ought to be able to import things into grouped sub-collections in some
rational way.

The problem is that sometimes the books really are found, in which case
you have to manually ensure you don't import duplicate copies when you
don't have physical duplicates. In addition, if you copy the list, and
then go back into Edit List, you then have to manually remove the
existing list or edit it. It's the step of reconciling the two lists
that creates mistakes and manual overhead.

I think that sometimes having access to the previously submitted list is
valuable, so having a "resubmit" button on the pop-up would seem to
cover both cases better, since that list only contains items that
weren't matched the first time through.

I think my point was that if I'm scanning books, under what
circumstances would I want to find matching ISBNs but not import the
titles into the collection? The only case I can think of is the one of
accidental duplicates (e.g. I mistakenly add the same ISBN twice when I
only have one copy of the book).

Keep in mind that I'm talking about a work-flow of scanning 20-30 books
at a time into location-based sub-collections. If I scan 200 books like
that, that's 60+ clicks to import the titles, plus 10x?? clicks to label
them with the right box or shelf number. It's the sub-collections that
magnify the inefficiencies here.

Does that make a bit more sense? If not, maybe I can send you a small
version of the books.tc I'm working with, so you can see what I'm
talking about first-hand.

Italian localization

Hi everyone, and Hi Robby,
congratulations for your work.
I added the missing lines to the Italian translation of Tellico but I didn't tested it yet. I'm a quite new linux user and, honestly speaking, I'm not really sure that I can compile the software with the new file inside and let it cohexist with the older version. I need to learn at least the basics, I know, but actually I really don't have a minute of spare time.
I suppose it was a good job, based on the previous translation by Lorenzo Novaro it need only some testing.
If someone can please have a look at it and report me possible errors (or fix it directly) would be a great thing for the italian users of this app.
Maybe I can compare the Italian translation with the French one, is only a matter of time.

Did you modify that bibtex-translations.xml file? What kind of changes?

Right. I know that there are some flavors of tex out there that support
utf-8, but Tellico sort of defaults to the lowest common denominator.

If you want to change the behavior, you can edit the bibtex-translation.xml
file that gets installed with Tellico. Take out the entries that you don't
want Tellico to translate.

I don't understand your problem. I think that it's correct to export an
accented letter with {\'e} as é is correct in LaTeX.

Could you explain a bit more?

Thanks for your work.
However, I can't export my books tellico base to bibtex format (not bibtexxml that I can't use), because I've got a utf-8 issue.
By example, with the word "athénien" I got ath{\'e}nienne in the final file.
My debian testing system is right with utf-8 by default, and I tried to launch tellico by a console with good locale, but I don't progress.

Certainly a valid question. I'll poke at it some. There's overhead with the
data structures, but a 10x+ memory usage is way excessive.

I'm not saying it's small but even if you load the whole 16 MB file to
RAM, why does it take up so much space?

My file is 1.9M, that's 16 MB unzipped. In KDE System Guard's process
table, Vmsize 277988, Vmrss 243480. (I double checked with top command
too).

A 16 MB XML text file is pretty huge. How many entries?

How are you measuring the memory usage? The virtual column in top includes

I have a test file with 10k entries that's 5 mb unzipped. The shared column
in top shows 20 m usage.

Are you loading the images at all? I mean, do you have a visible column with
the images, or using the icon view or anything? It's possible the image
cache is not working correctly, and the loaded pixmaps, etc. aren't being

original size.

I don't know how tellico does it, but I work for an app, and eg an xml file is 6.9 Mb, however, in reality this is a compressed file (like eg odf or docx format, also xml), uncompressed it is 48.7 Mb. In database format (xml is for export and import), this takes up two times 178 Mb on your hard disk (one for failsafe is a backup of last successfull data). However, because it is a database, one does not need to keep it in memory.
This example just to show things are not so easy to calculate and determine from the size of an xml file.

True. I wish I spoke SQL. I've taken a shot at it before, and had problems getting the performance.

If you can create a model in Django, then you can generate the SQL tables from the code Django creates, and have a first tool to edit it (the Django admin module). Once you have the database tables correct, well, I suppose the real work only starts then ;-)

It's been a chronic problem for some folks, and I've tried a few things with
reducing the memory usage, but like you point out, it seems to grow too
much with respect to the file size.

Tellico holds all the collection data in RAM once the file is opened. That's
obviously not going to work well with really big collections, it's just the
way I wrote it. If you delete your data file once it's loaded, Tellico can
save it again completely.

If things are in an sqlite embedded database as eg Amarok collection, you can avoid this. Undo is possible by going back in the database logs. Anyway, with all the database based apps now, people get used to atomic saves in apps that handle collections

Hi,

I'm using Tellico for a music collection, my .tc file is about 2 MB.
When I unzip it, it's about 16 MB as xml data.

When I open the file, Tellico consumes about 250 MB of my computer's
memory. I notice that as the collection grows, so does the memory
Tellico takes up.

I can't open this collection on my 512 MB machine with other
applications running since it causes huge swap activity.

Is this normal behavior? If so, is there anyway to improve Tellico to
consume less memory?

In the configuration of the datasource, I entered just "%1" as it is done in bedetheque datasource, but should be "-t %1".
Now it is working.

I will now complete coding and testing and then share, if someone else is interested ;-)

in the dialog, 4 comic book results.

Since ISBN results would certainly tend to be more certain, with a single
result per value, maybe if there was a button to "Enable auto-add" or
something to that effect. Such that when a result is found for an isbn
search, it's automatically added?

Why do you say error-prone? If you're importing a lot of books, then setting
a field default before you start, and removing it when you're done seems
straight-forward enough. I'm not sure where I would even put temporary
defaults in the internet search dialog. That might get rather intricate.

weren't found. I think you also wrote about some false negatives, too. In
any case, I would think you could simply copy the list of failed numbers
and paste that in the search dialog and start the search again?

So you want to collapse the "select item -> CTRL-A -> add entry -> close"
into happening when you click the close button? That seems rather
unexpected from a user perspective. It doesn't seem like excessive clicking
when you can add 100 new books with what, 6 clicks?

What options are you putting in the importer settings? You're setting the
result as a Comic Book Collection, right?

Not really, if you compile with enable-debug=full, there's some logging that
gets output, but nothing too comprehensive.

I'm trying to create a new datatsource for german's comicsource www.comicguide.de.

If I'm running the python script on commandline, it runs well and returns me expected results (see below).
Adding now into tellico as external source, it always tells me as "no data found".

As base I used existing script for bedetheque.
Is there somehow a log to check what tellico did ?

Amazon.de and then using akas.imdb.com are the only ones in Tellico right
now. Though, if you have GCstar installed, you can use any of the German
plugins for GCstar directly within Tellico. There are a couple of scripts
for italian movie sites on kde-files.org, but no german, I don't think.

To use buchkatalog as a data source, there would need to be a script for
scraping the website unless it has an API for accessing data. And I don't
know of one, sorry.

OK. You can add a field for the ISSN value, but I'd have to check how Amazon

Here's an XSL file for converting Tellico to UIEE format, based on what I
found at http://www.uiee.com/page3.htm. I haven't added all the fields,
just a few, so you can see how it works. To use it, File->Export->Export
XSL Transform, and select this XSL file in the box. Then click OK and
select the output file name.

Right now, the time and date aren't entered, and you'll need to edit the XSL
file directly to set the user name. To map a Tellico field to the UIEE
field, in Tellico, open the Fields Dialog, and set an extended property for
the field with name="uiee" and value="whatever the uiee name is". Then add
a line to the XSL file like so:
<u:field id="XX" tc="doesn't matter" name="whatever the uiee name is"/>

Maybe that can help you out some.
