Teaching graphing calculator usage in online developmental classes.

I'm into my 3rd year of teaching developmental online classes, and have yet to find a non-convoluted way to help students with no graphing calculator experience learn to use TI-83s.

Keystroke-specific video clips seem ideal, but I haven't stumbled across any, and am considering making my own in my "spare time".

If you have any suggestions for better ways to handle this, please share before I take the plunge.  Are graphing calculators required for your developmental classes?  If so, how is this requirement handled in your online sections?

Here's a site that has video clips for the basics:

RE: Teaching graphing calculator usage in online developmental classes.

Hi Majorie,

I use this same site for basics.  Here's another for things a little more complex:  < fym.la.asu.edu/~tturner/MAT_117_online/Regression/Linear%20Regression%20Using%20the%20TI-83%20Calculator.htm#Overview >

is great tutorial  from Prentice Hall.

I have some printable handouts  I created for my online students which I  now link for all my students.  Fell free to link to them.

One more thing about graphing calculators. A wonderful simulator for your desktop is available at:

Install into a folder. Click on the vti.exe file.  If you get a screen that asks you to look to search for a ROM image, press cancel, then click on the vti.exe file again.

I have this running from a thumb drive which is something I cannot do with my copy of TI SmartView.  As I teach in different classrooms in different buildings, and use a projector with PowerPoints for many lessons, this is a fabulous tool for teaching, but also for your online students.  I don't have to drag my Viewscreen with me and hope the overhead has a working bulb, and I can make it bigger  or smaller, and have options for different views. I can leave it "on top", take screen shots, etc. Right click for many options. ( Silly thing, you have to click to ON button to start it - just like real)  The kids love that I am showing them what keystrokes along with how to use the Calculator effectively to enhance the lesson.

Also, since this can be made very large, it might be a wonderful tool for those of you with visually impaired students.

You can certainly graph inequalities on the TI-89, although you have to
know whether you want above or below the function. You can't use the
inequality per se, but in the Y= window there is a menu choice (F6) of
Style and 7:Above or 8:Below will graph inequalities.

Does that help?

I want to find out how to graph inequalities using the TI-89.  On a
TI-83, 84 or 85, when you put in an equation and use the test key to get
the inequality sign, the graph shows up when you press graph.  I can not
make the TI-89 do this.  If anyone knows how, I would appreciate your
help.
