I, for one, would much rather have a stack-on-channel command than a
"create standalone stream object" command. Usecases for the former are
clear: read (write) compressed data from (to) socket/file. The only
usecase I've heard of for the latter is to implement the former.

Conversely, the only part of the stream interface that shouldn't
immediately be provided by a compressor/decompressor stacked on a
reflected channel are the partial stream checksum and the distinctions
between flush and fullflush, which seems like rather esoteric features.
Could the checksum be made available as an [fconfigure] option, if it
is needed?

Another issue is integration with the [binary encode] and [binary
decode] ensembles introduced by TIP#317. Putting the string-oriented
commands under [binary] could bring the following changes:

zlib compress data ?level?
becomes
binary encode zlib ?-level level? data

zlib decompress compressedData ?bufferSize?
becomes
binary decode zlib ?-buffer bufferSize? compressedData

zlib deflate data ?level?
becomes
binary encode flate ?-level level? data

zlib inflate compressedData ?bufferSize?
becomes
binary decode flate ?-buffer bufferSize? compressedData

zlib gzip data ?level?
becomes
binary encode gzip ?-level level? data
or taking Donal's point 2 into account:
binary encode gzip ?-level level? ?-info dictionary? data

(The idea here being that whatever command decodes gzip metadata would
return them as a dictionary. From the looks of RFC 1952, such a command
would be a straightforward application of [binary scan], so it wouldn't
have to be C-coded.)

Finally,
zlib gunzip compressedData ?bufferSize?
becomes
binary decode gzip ?-buffer bufferSize? compressedData

Another issue regarding gunzip is that, according to RFC 1952, a gzip
file can contain several "members" (effectively compressed files)
concatenated to each other (although usually there is only one), and
unlike the metadata in the header, there doesn't seem to be any way of
determining where one member ends without decompressing its contents.
Hence a [binary decode gzip] could use an option -trailerto (or
something) which names a variable to set to the part of the
compressedData which comes after the part being decompressed.

The checksum commands could reasonably be put in [binary] too.
Following the same pattern,

zlib crc32 data ?startValue?
could become
binary checksum crc32 ?-start startValue? data

and

zlib adler32 data ?startValue?
could become
binary checksum adler32 ?-start startValue? data

If a home in some ensemble could be found also for [zlib stream] or
channel counterpart, then this could mean a [::zlib] core command isn't
needed...

Initial Comment:

When Tk 8.5.1 is built and installed
from the source code distribution, the
pkgIndex.tcl file that gets installed
contains:

if {[catch {package present Tcl 8.5.1}]} { return }
package ifneeded Tk 8.5.1 [list load [file join $dir .. libtk8.5.so] Tk]

This script means that in an 8.5.0 Tcl interp,
the command

package require -exact Tk 8.5.1

will fail, even though the corresponding
[load] would work just fine. Tk 8.5.1 is
perfectly compatible with Tcl 8.5.0.

It seems that replacing the "$(TCLPATCHL)"
on line 710 of tk/unix/Makefile.in with
the literal string ".0" would resolve this.

The original problem is still
in the Tk 8.5.4 release, which
is demanding Tcl 8.5.4 even though
it's perfectly compatible with
Tcl 8.5.0.

Now the problem on the other end
is arising. Tk 8.5.4 is not
compatible with Tcl 8.6a2, and
it's clear now that it won't be
compatibile with Tcl 8.6.*, so
the filter should be screening
those out too.

This interferes with testing
Tk 8.6a2 at the moment. Out
of the box, with both Tk 8.5.4
and Tk 8.6a2 installed, a bare

package require Tk

in a Tcl 8.6a2 interp will try
to use Tk 8.5.4 and immediately
fail with

version conflict for package "Tcl": have 8.6a2, need exactly 8.5

The testing command

package prefer latest

or setting TCL_PKG_PREFER_LATEST will
work around the problem, but this
deserves a real fix in time for
Tk 8.5.5.
