There are several options. One is to take the source for one of those
specialized tclkits and add BLT to them, then built it in.
The second is to go through the steps to make one of the two packages
loadable from within a tclkit and add it as another piece of your
program - I'd recommend trying to get tix to be loadable over trying
to make blt loadable.
The third option, which I suspect you are less interested in, would be
to change things so you don't need one of the two. Of this route, I
would suggest that finding alternatives to Tix that were already in
the dqkit would probably be easier.

Tix and BLT with Starkit

Hi,

I am trying to compile a Tcl file into an .exe file, and I am using
starkit to get my file.kit. The thing is that I am using Tix and BLT
packages, and I don´t know how to put everything together in order to
get a unique executable using the Tclkit. I have tried with TixTclkit
and dqkit, but with those I can only use Tix or BLT, but not
together.
Can anyone help me?

Apologies - I just check out a fresh copy and those additions aren't
there... I must of added them myself some time ago. For some reason my
svn client (TortoiseSVN) wasn't showing the kitInit.c as locally
modified.

Popups in tclkit's initScript

Hi,

I've recently built tclkit based on the svn tclkit module.

There is some coded added into kitInit.c's initScript string:

"tk_messageBox -message \"main found here: [file join [info
nameofexe] main.tcl]\"\n"
"tk_messageBox -message \"file isfile: [file isfile [file join
[info nameofexe] main.tcl]]\"\n"

When a wrapped app starts up now the user is faced with these popups?
Is this intentional or just some residual debug code?

I have a kitgen tree that builds on solaris 10 - I imagine it will
build on solaris 8 as well. If you like I can tar up the tree and let
you have it. All I do is:

sh config.sh 8.5/solaris-sparc thread mk cli gui
cd 8.5/solaris-sparc
env CC=gcc MAKE=gmake gmake

I end up with a tclkit and a tclkitsh that are just like the old ones
(incr-Tcl and mk4tcl based) and also a tclkit-cli/tclkit-gui pair that
dont have Itcl and dont link to C++. However on solaris 10 sparc the
tclkit-cli and -gui dont work at the moment. So I stick with the
'tclkit' executable.

My tree is the svn head of kitgen with tcl and tk checkouts of
core-8-5-3 under an 8.5 subdirectory and cvs or svn heads of itcl,
metakit, thread, tclvfs, vqtcl and zlib under 8.x. This is as
described in previous mails (usually about doing this on windows)

ISO: full (original style) tclkit 8.5.x for sparc solaris 2.8?

I am wondering whether anyone knows of an original style tclkit 8.5.x
(that is, containing metakit, itcl, etc.) built for SPARC Solaris 8?

The tclkit on equi4 is, I suspect, built against solaris 10, and so
needs libraries I don't have available.

I've not been able to build tclkit for some time, due to a variety of
issues that I've been unsuccessful in resolving. kbskit doesn't work
because it is missing pieces.

I'm just trying to run a variety of starkits.

Who would have thought starkits would be so hard to run?

Also I should note that the "Create Mac application package" option
attempts to insert a line of code in main.tcl of the output starpack
to strip the Carbon process serial number argument from argv (per
http://wiki.tcl.tk/12987#pagetocaf666f28). This may fail depending how
the starkit is set up. As a work-around, you can still build an Aqua
starpack without the application package option - it'll just launch
through the terminal.

I'm still not sure what the problem was, but I tried a slightly older
Windows tclkit from Equi 4 (8.4.16) and it appears to work. I've
updated the post again to include a screenshot and download link for
the Windows version (http://anoved.net/2008/03/starpacker.html).

Some of the windows tclkit executables use vqtcl instead of mk4tcl for
the metakit interface. If you use one of the vqtcl exes
(tclkit-gui.exe or tclkit-cli.exe) then it can't merge vfs trees - you
need mk4tcl for that (tclkit.exe or tclkitsh.exe) .

This may or may not be the problem.

I made a little utility based on SDX for making Starpacks. I wrote it
mostly for practice and for my own convenience, but perhaps it will be
useful for others.

haven't had an opportunity to work them out. (Any advice or
information on that would be useful.) I use it on Mac OS X.

No. You still place your modified ico file in the root of the vfs
tree. However, the one that is built into the tclkit executable and
therefore is the one that you are replacing is from
kitgen/files/tclkit.ico.

The sdx utility has for some time been able to replace the version
resource strings in the same way that it can replace the icon
resources. To do this you include a file tclkit.inf in the root of the
vfs tree. It will be read into an array so it should be a set of Tcl
parseable name value pairs. The following file would be suitable:

CompanyName "Some Company Gmbh."
LegalCopyright "Copyright (c) 2008 Some Company Gmbh."
FileDescription "My fancy program"
ProductName "Fancy Program"
ProductVersion "1.0.0.1"

To follow up to myself -- I had reason to create a starpack and change
the icons and string version resources and I found no problem:

icon 32x32/16: replaced
icon 16x16/16: replaced

customizing strings in executable
FileDescription: set to 'My file description'
CompanyName: set to 'Some Company.'
ProductName: set to 'My product name'
LegalCopyright: set to 'Copyright (c) 2008 Some Company.'
ProductVersion: set to '1.0.0.0'
19 updates applied

This is using the current kitgen code and therefore the current
kitgen/files/tclkit.ico file. I changed the icons using visual studio
2005 and it successfully replaced the 48x48 icons. In this case the
tclkit-gui.exe is a upx compressed executable of 8.5.2 pre-release
built for windows ix86 using kitgen and msvc6.

If you have an icon file for tclkit that has the full set of icons in
the right order I can replace the kitgen .ico file and this will get
fixed. The newest equi4.com executables were built by me so thats why
they exhibit the same problem. The icon file we have in the
kitgen/files/tclkit.ico file was I believe copied from the old genkit
sources and I see it does include a 48x48/16 and 48x48/256 icon types
- so perhaps the order is changed for some reason.

If we can identify a corrected ico file soon then we can have
corrected exes for the imminent 8.5.2 release.

loading oratcl from starkit

hi everybody:

I'm having some problems loading oratcl from a starkit. I found a post from G. Lester adviced to use the following script in the package index:

This works fine in some computers (running windows 2000), but fail in anothers (windows 2000 and xp). The script fail when it try to load the oratcl44.dll, the error message doesn't say why. I tried adding the $env(TEMP)to the $env(PATH) without success.

I'd appreciate any suggestions you may have.

Hello Group,
since years I use the starkit windows icon replacement with sdx.

I noticed that the starpacks from Pat Thoyts did not replace the 48x48
icons:
customizing tclkit.ico in executable
icon 32x32/16: replaced
icon 16x16/16: replaced
icon 32x32/256: replaced
icon 48x48/256: NOT FOUND
icon 48x48/16: NOT FOUND
icon 16x16/256: replaced

while the starkits on Jean-Claudes page still worked.
Now, Jean-Claude has updated the starkits on
http://www.equi4.com/tclkit/download.html
and they show the same phenomenon as Pat Thoyts builds.

Has anybody the same phenomenon ?
I have read, that the icons should be in a special order.
I have extracted the icon from the starkit (so its own icons which
should be correct) and I get the same error on 48x48 icons.

I would not mind to get any ideas befor doing the hard way and
manipulate the starkit directly with other tools.

I'm sorry about that, a bunch of links appear to have fallen between
the cracks during my conversion to the new www.equi4.com website. I've
added a link to a page on an old equi4 wiki to the Tclkit

I now realize that the wiki snapshots at http://www.equi4.com/wikis/
no longer have a good search capability, since they are static pages

so others can find the pages as well. Meanwhile, I'll try to come up
with a better way to get at what's on the www.equi4.com website. Apart
from the static wiki snapshots, most page links are still intact, the
web site structure has not changed one bit.

This updated page is part of the new Tcl-driven website design.

Two changes w.r.t. the Mac OS X builds:
- the latest x86 (and universal) builds should now work on 10.4 again
- I've signed the binaries to get past the Leopard firewall issue, as
mentioned by Steve L & Mark R recently
(if you have the setup to test this, could you post your findings here?)

All builds are based on the /pub/tk/tars/ area, which has not changed.

This issue has been resolved in the kitgen builds by building the
runtime.kit file as part of the build process and setting the package
index files to the correct versions of these extensions by asking them
as we create the vfs tree.

I was finally able to figure out what went wrong. It was a missing
-DTK_LOCAL_APPINIT=TclKit_AppInit
for ..\src\tk\win\winMain.c in the kit project. Similar for the kitsh project.
Perhaps Pat's build system is more robust than this one. Will try it...

To conclude:

How to build tclkit on Windows XP using Tcl/Tk 8.5.1
----------------------------------------------------

1. Used genkit to get all sources (on unix). Replaced tcl85 and tk85 with
released 8.5.1 sources.

2. Got http://www.equi4.com/pub/tk/tars/msvc6-85.tar.gz and imported it
into VC++7.

3. Changed path to src/tcl/win/tclAppInit.c to src/tcl85/win/tclAppInit.c

4. Changed path to src/tk/win/winMain.c to src/tk85/win/winMain.c

So, I decided to go ahead and try making kitgen, using the "large"
target (figuring that might be different than lite).

So after reading the README, I typed:

gmake tars

The first thing I ran into (in case someone else trys this on Solaris)
is that kitgen's makefile uses "tar xfz". If that fails for you,
change your path so that the GNU tar comes first, so that the files
can be extracted.

Another note for people using kitgen, each time the gmake tars fails,
you need to delete all the directories so they can be recreated.

Next problem - the gmake large attemps to build the Thread extension -
but it isn't one of the ones downloaded from the web site. You need to
get that yourself and put it into the 8.x directory. When I realized
this, I decided to look for itcl or incrtcl, to be certain that it is
built.

kitgen doesn't build it.

So, I'm back where I was at the beginning. It doesn't look like kitgen
will create an original tclkit. On the other hand, this exchange did
allow me to rediscover the directory where the genkit script is
located. Now to see if I can get it to run.

My problem with kitgen is that its doc says it is used to build tclkit-
lite . I don't see anything in the README about building an original

Setting up to build tclkits using kitgen.

Given a couple of recent posts I thought I should describe how I have
setup my build tree to build tclkits for windows and solaris 10 using
kitgen. At the present time it requires a little manual setup as the
automatic stuff is out-of-date but it is possible to create a tree
containing CVS or SVN checkouts of the various necessary projects and
then to build either tclkit-lite's or 'heavy' (mk4tcl+incr-tcl)
tclkits. I build on windows using both msvc6 and msvc8 ( the latter
for building for 64bit windows).

So get kitgen:
svn checkout svn://svn.equi4.com/kitgen/trunk kitgen

Make some subdirs for the tcl versions you want to build for and to
contain the tcl-version independent packages
mkdir 8.4 8.5 8.x

Note that you dont _have_ to call it 8.5. For instance I'm working
with a patched tree from Miguel and its in a subdirectory called NRE
which helps to isolate it from the normal Tcl builds.

In each version folder you want to checkout tcl and tk.
cd 8.4
cvs -d:pserver:anonymous@...:/cvsroot/tcl co -r
core-8-4-branch tcl
cvs -d:pserver:anonymous@...:/cvsroot/
tktoolkit co -r core-8-4-branch tk

cd ../8.5
cvs -d:pserver:anonymous@...:/cvsroot/tcl co tcl
cvs -d:pserver:anonymous@...:/cvsroot/
tktoolkit co tk

In the version independent folder you want to get versions of tclvfs,
thread, zlib and vqtcl. If you want to build old-style tclkits as well
you need mk4tcl and incr-tcl. Some of these can be obtained as tar.gz
files from http://www.equi4.com/pub/tk/tars/ but I prefer to use cvs
checkouts
cd 8.5
mkdir thread tclvfs zlib vqtcl itcl mk
cvs -d:pserver:anonymous@...:/cvsroot/tcl co
thread
cvs -d:pserver:anonymous@...:/cvsroot/tclvfs
co tclvfs
cvs -d:pserver:anonymous@...:/cvsroot/incrtcl

(for zlib get the tar.gz from equi4 and unpack in 8.x/zlib)

Much of this is just as described in the README file in the kitgen
sources but some of the repository locations may well have changed.

Now you are ready to build. On unix or Windows with gcc and msys you
can use the config.sh script to build a makefile with the right
settings. For instance to build an 8.5 tclkit use
sh config.sh 8.5/kit-medium thread cli gui
This will create a 8.5/kit-medium/Makefile for you and you can then
change to that directory and do the build by typing 'make'. Note that
the subdirectory name is not special in any way. It could just as
easily be 8.5/my-tclkit. The important part is that it will look for
tcl and tk in the parent directory and all the other packages in ../../
8.x/* All the build output will end up in a 'build' subdirectory that
you can delete once you have the tclkit executables.

To build using MSVC and nmake instead
mkdir 8.5\win32-ix86
echo !include ..\..\Makefile.vc > 8.5\win32-ix86\Makefile

You can then build tclkits using
cd 8.5\win32-ix86
nmake VERSION=85
(or 8.4\win32-ix86 and nmake VERSION=84)

This is known to be ok with msvc6 and msvc8

At the moment you may have to twiddle the versions files\tk8.* to
match the version you are building. This is something I want to fix so
that the pkgIndex created matches the Tk version compiled in without
manual intervention.

You can use the current kitgen stuff to build old-style tclkits (ie
ones containing incr-tcl and using mk4tcl). I;ve used this to build on
solaris 10.

IMO kitgen is rather easier to use than genkit as it mostly just calls
the various projects TEA makefiles.

I am looking at the wubwiki starkit. It requires Tcl 8.5 and Itcl.
This means that kbs and tclkit-lite are not going to be able to be
used with it. So I have to try, once again, to see if I can convince
tclkit to build on sparc solaris.

Where can I find the source for building the original style tclkit?

I looked at the equi4.com web page for tclkit, but I don't see a
pointer to the sources any longer.

But something goes really wrong with the initializations. When I
double
click tclkit.exe it can't find init.tcl. It says: "Can't find
init.tcl
when searching in:
.../My Documents/C/tclkits85/lib/tcl8.5/
when it should be something like:
.../My Documents/C/tclkits85/msvc7-85/tclkit.exe/(...?)/lib/tcl8.5/

I have put the complete VC++7 projects here:
