Taking pictures on cloudy days

Hi folks:

I'm about to head out to take some pictures in one of our local parks
-- my beautiful sunny summer day has vanished and its now grey and
cloudy -- I know that cloudy grey days are great for pictures because
the sky becomes the worlds largest softbox, but it also mutes the
colors of flowers and birds etc.  how do I get the best of both

im shooting raw on a D300, processing in Lightroom
