this is all not decided yet, it's all still quite alpha although it's
working quite good already. Many essential things like messaging, a wall
and stuff like that are missing...

I guess that was a bit of a sarcastic stab at your "this won't be
happening" line without discussion. I apologise for that.

What's been done so far is actually very impressive and IMHO definitely
does deserve the merit of "the" community extension. I have been eagerly
updating my svn checkout quite regularly to follow its progress.

True. Wide spread implementations are a great reason for using
standards. The other big advantage though is that so much thought and
consideration has gone into such a model that it has become very stable
and very flexible.

Agreed though, it would take quite some effort to integrate. Maybe more
effort than benefit for now. Particularly since the tx_party
implementation is also still in early stages and that OpenSocial has a
nice semi-standard model to work from.

Now you're talking! These are the standards that will really make a
difference in social portability! I was going to bring up OpenSocial in
my last post but didn't want to come across as some sort of standards
nazi after my tx_party rant :-)

Matter of fact, I already see a lot of similarities between Apache
Shindig[1] and tx_community. Partuza[2] is a great example of Shindig in
action. Is that where you see tx_community headed on the roadmap for
later versions? A TYPO3 implementation of Shindig?

OpenDataDefinition I'm not so familiar with but I came across the ODD
implementation Elgg[3] recently and it all sounds pretty interesting.
APML[4] would also be a good portability standard to support through the
Engagd SDK[5]. Attention Profiling IMHO is where lies the real magic for
monetising these social networks. But that is probably getting a bit out
of scope for now.

All good stuff Ingo. I'm really glad you brought up OpenSocial and I'm
really glad the project is in such good hands.

I do have a few questions about how much you envision OpenSocial being a
part of tx_community. Shindig's main application focus is of course the
client-side google gadgets. Which looks to be not the case for tx_community.

The new beta RESTful[6] and RCP[7] Open Social APIs help a little with
gadget access from the server-side but they're still essencially
client-side applications. Are you considering both a TYPO3 server-side
MVC approach to widget building _and_ support for client-side google
gadgets? ... Or are you considering one or the other? ... Or is it too
soon for these sorts of questions?

I really don't believe in"party" yet even though I know it's a published
standard... It's just not wide spread enough yet to justify the effort
integrating it. If there's a point in time when it becomes wide spread
enough one could still do something about it like developing an exporter
or a connector or something the like.

What I see as a better fit for that community/social network stuff are
standards like OpenSocial, OpenDataDefinition and their friends. Those
are on the roadmap for later versions BTW.

I agree with you. To me those are two different things too. Both models
do overlap greatly though, and there are many advantages in extending
tx_party rather than having to recreate the wheel in either extension.

Enough advantages I would think to have it open for discussion.

putting my hand up to help. In any case, for the sake of TYPO3 keeping
up with this social networking revolution, I do believe "party centric
information" is a big part of this extension and its worth an open
discussion rather than such an abrupt reply.

Thank Ingo, I was looking for it in the New Content Element Wizard to no
avail. I found it in the dropdown though, cheers!

No problem. I see lots of svn changes happening. Thats exciting! :-) I
just really got it up and running to see where it was at and where I

Hi Ingo,

As I see it, tx_party was built from the OASIS Party standard with the
aim of developing global and generic industry standards for managing
"Party Centric Information". (Party as in people or organizations.)

IMHO, in an ideal world any new extension that manipulates people or
organizational data should use the party extension. Either as is or by
extending it. Unfortunately we don't live in an ideal world but I'd like
to help with small steps to head in that direction. Or at least to give
it some good thought.

The party extension has been designed to manage relationships to other
parties and personal information though, so it shouldn't take too much
extending to be a perfect match to the person related community
requirements.

Both these projects are in their infancy so it would be a great time to
grow them together for a more future proof party/relationship centric
model that many TYPO3 extensions could make use of.

What do you think?

unfortunately there's no manual yet. However insert the plugins by using
the general plugin content element and choose Community Application,
from there on there's not much to choose.

Of course there's some configuration needed, too. I hope the
configuration option names in the TS are mostly selfexplainatory.

However, as you noticed yourself already, it's still very early in
development, so please don't use it in a production environment yet,
many things are expected to change until a first stable version that
will be released in TER then (including a manual).

is it usable in a development environment yet?

I have just installed the extension I downloaded from the svn trunk and
inserted the static Typoscript template but I'm a bit unsure of the next
step.

Is there any manual adjustments that must be made while its still being
developed? I couldn't see any frontend plugins to insert from the new
content element wizard. I just thought I'd ask before I go looking for
something that isn't there.

tx_community and tx_party

Hi guys,

Love your work. I think the need for this community extension is huge.
Am I right to assume this extension is planned to be "the" community
extension? ... as in to some sort of "official" capacity?

There have been many extensions in the past to handle user and community
based features. I know its still early days but it would be great to
have more community type development in coordination with the ECT.

One case in point is the current wec_people extension which was
originally developed to be "the" people and organization model for
TYPO3. Its currently hosted with the Web Empowered Church but they have
offered to put it on forge and change it back to the original and more
official tx_party extension if there is enough support from the TYPO3
community.

I think these two extensions would be a great combination. Has there
been any thought into using and extending the tx_party model?

I think the future for websites are communities, as more and more

Content Management for Community Users

Hi there,

after a first draft of the community extension, there is still one issue
unclear to me. I'd like to have a possibility for the community users
to create different content on the community website (e.g. galleries,
blogs, messages...).

As there are different extensions for each of these subjects, the
question for me is, how to enable an extension so manage the creation
and the output of those plugins. I'll give you an example:

* User A gets a link "Create new gallery" that leeds him to a form for
creating galleries. The data is saved in a database table for the
gallery extension you are using.

* User B wants to take a look at the gallery of User A. Therefore, the
community extension has to determine, whether User B is allowed to see
the content, if Yes, it should use the rendering of the gallery plugin
to render the gallery.

So there are two main questions:

1.) How could we do the rights-management as easy as possibly (perhaps
using already established T3 functionality)

2.) How can one plugin use another plugin for rendering?

Besides those questions, there is still the need for a forms-library
that creates the frontend forms (automatically from TCA, if possible).

So far - do you have any ideas, how to solve this?

Would be nice to get some solutions!

Hi Marc,

thats nice to read and i just have to say, that I was thinking about sponsors to
support some developers. I also could try to get some money and would support
this. Its not much, but if we get some more people, then this could be a good
start. Currently i checked http://www.boonex.com/products/dolphin/ . Quite
interesting product, but again stuff is missing to be perfect or even to be
usefull enough on some parts for us. But a good idea to see, what is available
for free on the market. I installed this one and tested it and there are some
really nice ideas inside of it.
Anyway. Something on TYPO3 would be perfect. The big question is, in which way
and how the community extensions should be implemented and work together and
which roadmap could be possible. Of course it depends on the money, but maybe to
get an idea, how much time and money would be needed and how the result would
be. Did you checked the WIKI with ideas from some users of this group? Which
kind of experiences does your agency has with development of TYPO3 Extensions?
Sadly I have no time for starting to develope stuff for TYPO3. I really would
like, but I also need some hours for sleeping ;-). But maybe I can help with
some money. A bit. For me its important, that someone would lead the different
developers and subprojects, to get a perfect and flexible result.

Hi Ingo,

I did not want to use community as a key, because my extension is only a
draft so far and I did not want to use the "official" key. That's why I
choose the "mklv" in front. If we agree in using the code as a
"official" extension, I think, it's no problem to replace the key.

First draft of community extension on T3XDEV

Hi there,

I'd like to announce a first collection of ideas for a community
extension I just uploaded to the T3XDEV repository. You can find the SVN
repository on [3].

Please keep in mind, that this is only a collection of ideas. Most of
the time I spend in writing those lines of code were used to get an
overall impression of lib/div and to integrate PROPEL into Typo3
extensions [1].

For me, the following functionality was most important and is partly
implemented in the existing code:

* (Editable) User Details
* User lists
* Rights-Management for each plugin, configurable via TS
* Groups, which can be created, joined and left by users
* Group lists
* Buddies and displaying relations of users via Buddies

All this functionality is only implemented as far as I needed to know
how it could work in lib/div. There are no images or photos to be upload
nor is there a detailed user-profile that can be set up. All those
things need to be done now.

As a next step, I'd like to put up a group of developers who are
interested in bringing these ideas to a first alpha draft within the
next months. Therefore, we should consider on a common list of features,
first a small one, which can be implemented very fast.

The next step would be to set up an API for all community concerned
functionality.

So please let me know, whether you are interested in cooperating on the
code and let's set up a final feature list based on the one that is
available on the wiki [2].

Hi,

I'm using mm_forum, New login box and i will probably use cwt_community. I
need to set up this extensions to use as a username the e-mail field. So
users will need to type in the login box of the login form their e-mail
address. Have anyone an solution?

Hi David,

the release will take some time. I hope to come out with a first
prototype during the end of November. One of the biggest problem for me
are the quick changes in lib/div on which I started to implement the new
extension. I think there will be no beta version of our community
extension until lib/div goes beta.

At the beginning there will be only little more functionality than
cwt_community, but it will be based on lib/div and thereby easier to extend.
