Again thank you very much for your help. I downloaded the sample bundle as you suggested and I found what I was looking for. The source code is very helpful for me since I can map what I read with the source code and therefore understand the concepts better.

The mailconnector-RA sample source code is available in the samples
bundle of the J2EE 1.4 RI. You could download it at
http://java.sun.com/j2ee/1.4/download.html [download the samples bundle]

The mailconnector-RA is available in the directory
samples/connectors/apps/mailconnector/

Unfortunately the Sun Java System Application Server v9 (which was based
on Java EE 5) appears to be bundled only with Java EE 5 related samples.

MailConnector-RA

Hi,

Does anyone know from where I can get the source code for the MailConnector-RA mentioned in the document "Creating Resource Adapters with
J2EE Connector Architecture 1.5" published by Sun Microsystems?

In Appendix A of this document it says that this connector is provided with Application Server PE 8. I did try to download this version of Sun Application Server however I found out that only version 9 was available. I downloaded this version and could not find the sample MailConnector-RA.

I tried to download other Connectors source code. However I feel it would be easier for me to map what is in the document with the MailConnector-RA.

Implementation question in "Mailconnector" in J2EE 1.4.04 samples

Here is the post I had in JavaMail but did not get any replies.

As some of you know, the following link has sample files and a JCA SMTP sample under mailconnector directory.

This sample demonstrates how to write a JCA (Resource Adapter) for an email server. It has both inbound and outbound pieces. The outbound piece means that the clients send email messages using this adapter. I have noticed that the sample first getting the "Session" object and then from the Session object, it is getting the "Store" and finally making connection to the store using "store.connect()"

Why is it doing this? Why can it just use the session object and get the "Transport" object from it and connect?

Did you click on the link for "Download J2EE 1.4 sample applications"?
I don't think it is part of "Java EE 5 sample applications"

JCA Custom Adapter for SMTP

Destroy underlying physical connection

I have situation where i need to destroy the underlying physical EIS
connection from my application code.
Here is the scenario i would likes to destroy the physical connection.

1. Have a pool of connections in my weblogic wls 8.1 sp5 container.

2. Unfortunatenly the physical mainframe system has recycled when i send
the request (Say RequestA).

3. Now i got the ResourceException due to the unavailability of the backend
systems, I have closed the connection (Say ConnectionA).

4. Now its available in the pool for use. [ It's actually a bad
connection/faulty ]

5. The container should trigger the the event "CONNECTION_ERROR_OCCURRED"

6. So that the RA could destroy the physical connection.

7. This does not happen ( I hope so)

8. When there is a new request (Say RequestB) using the same connection
(Say ConnectionA)and got the response of the first request (RequestA).

9. I need to destroy the physical connection which is referenced with
ConnectionA

10. Is there any way to destroy the physical connection from application
code.

The spec does not specifically talk about message inflow in a
non-managed environment - because as you pointed out - there are no MDBs in
a non-managed environment.

POJOs , implementing the message listener interface. So you would need a
POJO container which supports this.

I guess that the contract can be 'made to apply' in an NME not for MDBs but
for other Java objects which are message listener implementations. In
addition, there must be an implementation of the MessageEndpointFactory and
related interfaces for hooking into the RA.

Message Inflow contract in a non-managed environment

I have a question about the Message Inflow contracts in JCA 1.5. Does the
Message Inflow contract provide for the possibility of using a JCA Resource
Adapter in a non-managed environment?

Most of the specs, documentation, articles that I read talk about using
Message Driven Beans as the endpoints for the asynchronous messages coming
from the Resource Adapter. However, in the non-managed environment you would
not have any Message Driven Beans. So, what would act as the endpoint in the
non-managed enviroment?

Chapter 12 of the JCA 1.5 spec says that the Message Inflow contract "allows
a resource adapter to asynchronously deliver messages to message endpoints
residing in the application server". Does this imply that in a non-managed
environment (without an application server) that this contract does not
apply?

my ManagedConnectionFactory implementation can gain access to this shared
data by implementing the ResourceAdapterAssociation interface.

ResourceAdapter javabean is probably what you are looking for.
Connector 1.5 specification introduced lifecycle management model
for resource adapters and RA javanbean is designated as central
authority or registry for the resource adapter instance specific
information.

Please see section 5.3 of the spec for more details.

Thanks for the reply, Binod. Yes, I see what you mean about section 6.5.3.3

My issue is this: I need to find a resource adapter class that has only a
single object instance per EIS instance. In this object instance I want to
maintain a pool of objects that is centrally accessible from all
ManagedConnectionFactory instances. I believe that this may not be possible
in a clustered (multi-JVM) environment, but that does not concern me at
present. As long as I can make it work for a single JVM then I will be
happy.

Any ideas?

Hi,

I am wondering if anybody can help me with an answer to the following
question.

Does the JCA spec (1.5) guarantee that an application server will maintain
only a single instance of the ManagedConnectionFactory class per target EIS
instance?

Section 6.5.3.3 seems to make this point a little fuzzy to me.
