Rebooting Your Business Brain
21st-century marketing tips for photographers who weren’t born
yesterday.

Chicago-based former Rep and Photography Marketing Consultant Carolyn
Potts presents this evening seminar.

You’ve learned your digital imaging craft and tried to keep an
optimistic attitude while micro-stock has eroded the size of the photo
assignment pie. But what if you’re not getting the work you want? What
else are you missing?

Making the transition to an all-digital workflow is just one piece of
today’s photo business. Knowing how marketing has dramatically changed
is the other key component to survival — it’s more than having a web
site and doing email blasts.

Without understanding the fundamental differences between marketing in
the 20th century and marketing in the 21st, you can unknowingly
sabotage your career.

Are you wondering…

        • What’s the best way to reach art buyers in the digital age?
        • What email skills must you know to not look like a loser?
        • What are the current best practices when it comes to online
promotion?
        • Is print promotion dead, dying, or reviving?

After 20+ years as a successful artists’ rep and 7 as an Internet
Marketing Strategist, Carolyn Potts is uniquely qualified to help
photographers create — and stick to — a 21st-century marketing plan.
She has helped her photographers get clients, close deals, anticipate
trends, revitalize their careers & increase the bottom line.

The lack of transparency regarding sub-distributors is a major
problem. SAA's "investigative purchases" would be concerning if 40 or
50% of purchases resulted in problems but as you state virtually all
were problems. All photographers with agencies that use sub-
distributors must ask themselves, "what percentage of sales are being
reported and paid". In most cases photographers dont even know which
sub-distributors are selling their photos. This is not to mention the
sub-distributors of the sub-distributors and on and on.
> made on behalf of the Stock Artists Alliance through sub-distributors
> ended up having some snag where the photographer took abnormally long
> to be paid. In many cases it wasn't until someone queried that the
> sale was noted. So yes, it does pay to follow up when you know a
> sale has been made.
>
> The bigger question is, how do you know that has happened in the case
> where your images are with a sub-distributor?

Hi Rubens,

Ah, yes, that "protection" debate... :-)

I was initially impressed with the product and felt it did about as
much as could be done. It certainly was not foolproof. Then I
discovered, after buying it, that the program does not play well with
PHP and among other things, prevented me from using image alt tags. We
did not want to forego these or a few other features and decided not
to use Protware. I explained this to them expecting a refund but was
refused one. I think this is inexcusable and tantamount to theft, as I
could not use their software due to the inherent limitations which
were not apparent initially. I would caution anyone dealing with them
to never pay in advance for anything! The best protection is probably
a complex watermark, centered on the image which we've done. It may
>
> This is a "hue test" and your task is to line up the color hues
>
> I don't understand your costs in regards to having the work of
> photogrpahers on line. Once you have the pictures on line other
than
> paying for a little storage space what is the cost?

Once you begin licensing the images of others' you must then begin
providing services in line with what other "agencies" offer. I
suppose you don't have to but there's a lot of pressure to. With more
images there are more sales and you need a sales person or people and
then you need an accountant and then...

> I too have thought about advertising but decided against it as I
> think it takes away from the focus of my site being an online
library.
>
> "If you were starting and agency today" is it not possible to
change
> whatever you are doing from this day forward ?

Yes, and I would, except that I feel I made a commitment to my
photographers and employees and I also hate to destroy what I have
built. My bottom line is to get where I want to be without screwing
anyone over so I am two years into a slow transition. I have already
had to shock some people with layoffs a few years ago and I would
prefer not going through that again.
>1. Comps are 72 dpi and the size is not reasonable for any usage.
>Other point is the legal aspect.
>
>2. 70/30 is very good and equal for photographers. Our site launched
>for photo buyers after Eastern period and our sales are in right shape.

Janne:

Hmm, I thought all of the images on the Internet were used at 72ppi.
As a matter of fact, the images in most banner ads are significantly
smaller than the comps that you offer on your site. The fact that
they contain no visible watermarks only makes them easier to use.

In addition, half of the images which I spot-checked had no embedded
metadata. This means that if a client downloads one of your
members/subscribers images and uses it in a comp, that it is very
possible that they will not know where they downloaded it, and thus
have no means of returning to your site and legitimately licensing the image.

If you are not aware of the impending Orphan Works legislation (which
passed the US Senate last week, and only failed in the House because
the legislative session closed for the year), you might want to take
a look at what others can do with images for which it is unclear that
there is any owner (http://orphanworks.blogspot.com/).

Based on the lack of metadata and the fact that many of the images
seem to have whatever color space profile the member happened to
upload them at (a large number were in the Adobe RGB colorspace which
is not the optimum for the web), I would question the integrity of
your infrastructure. At minimum, you should be warning your
members/contributors that they should be including copyright and
contact metadata.

At first I thought you were legitimately asking about this new
service, but it turns out that you are the owner and CEO, surprise, surprise.

http://www.allto1.com/?page=about-us

"Mr. Janne Komulainen has over 13 years of experience e.g. network
communications company, new media field, telephone company and cable
TV and public administration.

His own passion is to make an easy-to-use portal where people can
share their quality snaps. And Janne also has a great interest in photography.

He holds a diploma of Master of Business Administration."

Any agency/distributor, with which I would choose to work, had best
demonstrate to me that they are good at both running a business, and
also technologically adept.... and show an interest in protecting my
work, at least to the degree necessary to insure that people can
easily return to license an image once they have decided that mine is the one.

Given these problems, I could not in good conscious recommend your
service to any photographer that I know.

Curiously, virtually every single "investigative purchase" that was
made on behalf of the Stock Artists Alliance through sub-distributors
ended up having some snag where the photographer took abnormally long
to be paid. In many cases it wasn't until someone queried that the
sale was noted. So yes, it does pay to follow up when you know a
sale has been made.

The bigger question is, how do you know that has happened in the case
where your images are with a sub-distributor?
>another agency...one of the top three.

Yvette:

This is one good reason to be thankful that the Stock Artists
Alliance is around. They have been following up with PhotoLibrary
(thanks to the tireless efforts of Roy Hsu), and with the many
photographers with IndexStock and other agencies that were bought by
PhotoLibrary in the past couple of years.

http://www.stockartistsalliance.org/photolibrary-info
The most recent press release (Sept. 30, 2008)
this resulted in PhotoLibrary scheduling payments amounting to
$560,000 in long overdue royalties due to 116 StockIndex
Photographers that probably would not have received that money otherwise.

As for whether other distributors are delaying payments, that is
another question. It does sometimes seem that it can take forever to
receive payments. If it seems like it's taking longer than normal, go
back and check your contract(s). Most indicate the process and lay
out a timeline.

I don't understand your costs in regards to having the work of other
photogrpahers on line. Once you have the pictures on line other than
paying for a little storage space what is the cost?

I too have thought about advertising but decided against it as I
think it takes away from the focus of my site being an online library.

"If you were starting and agency today" is it not possible to change

About 6 years ago I began licensing my images online and within a
year or two it had morphed into an "agency" where we were also
selling images from other photographers.

It has been very lucrative and if I hadn't overexpanded a few years
ago and made some typical mistakes that small businesses make when
they begin to grow, I would have no regrets at all.

There are at least two ways you can utilize a website, IMO: You can
either use it as a product catalog or you format it like a magazine
directed towards image buyers. A product catalog sells product and
therefore does not have ads. A magazine features information and may
also sell product and makes additional revenue on ads.

I use the magazine format in order to diversify my revenue. If I
didn't have the ad revenue I would likely have to either charge
photographers a fee or remove most of them since the administrative
costs are sustantial. Most photographers are costing me more than
they make without the ads. A small handful account for the majority
of our sales.
> Rob, it is never a waste of time to use your own website to promote
> your own stock images. It can be very beneficial to the art buyer to
> see all the work of one artist together. What better way than the
> artist website where he or she decides what is his or her best work.
> Even a very basic website still leads itself to stock sales. You can
> use paypal for credit card payment or accept payments by direct
> deposit or old fashion checks. The most important think to remember
> about websites make them user friendly to your buyers as well as to
> yourself.
>

Iris,
This very thought was going through my mind today. What is the
best way of promoting the website - emailing publishers directly or
is there somewhere where the site can be put to bring it to the
attention of the publishing world? I have contaacted BAPLA in the UK
but to join they want trade references - well if you are just
starting you won't have any but membership would no doubt bring in
trade - the old "chicke and egg" - any thougts?

Rob, it is never a waste of time to use your own website to promote
your own stock images. It can be very beneficial to the art buyer to
see all the work of one artist together. What better way than the
artist website where he or she decides what is his or her best work.
Even a very basic website still leads itself to stock sales. You can
use paypal for credit card payment or accept payments by direct
deposit or old fashion checks. The most important think to remember
about websites make them user friendly to your buyers as well as to
yourself.

I think it's okay in artistic photography, dadaism and lots of other isms, but not realism. somehow disturbing in something that is presented as real landmarks or travel images. If you want to remove the Statue of Liberty and plunk her in front of the White House and then peddle the image as WaDC-- I suppose that most people would recognize it for what it is.

> nonrelated question. I was digging about an agent and found

several faked images by same photographer.

>

> I can walk out the door, grab the metro and shoot the same subject

to prove them as fakes. More bothersome to me though is that it seems

that this guy's portfolio is made up from famous images or highly

circulated images from Prague that he copped.

>

> The agency wants 100 images portfolio for submission, but says

>

to the agency from the same "photographer" , but several I recognize

as works of other photographers.

>

> fakes as in strange composites.. . an object is where it doesn't

>

>

> and if you see images you think are copped? do you inform the

This subject was discussed at great length in the past - controversial then, controversial now. Review the archives under 'photoshopped images" or similar terms for the various thoughts and opinions and arguments, it was a lively discussion. Some more info that bears on this issue :

One popular distributor's position on digital alterations:

"Whilst many images may be altered to a certain degree, if the original scene has been changed significantly we define it as digitally altered. This includes adding, moving, or removing items and major changes to saturation, contrast and levels. Essentially, a digitally altered image is a distorted image of the original scene.
?

An image should not be classed as digitally altered if it has been cropped, converted to black and white or if minor changes have been made to levels and saturation.

Editorial customers (e.g. newspapers, magazines, book publishers) need to know if an image has been altered such that it no longer has the exact appearance of the original. Some customers need to be guaranteed a degree of authenticity. "

So, just how do you quantify terms such as "changed significantly", "minor changes". What would a "reasonable person" in a court of law think ?

Bottom line, anonymous/unreported 'changes' made to your images are done so at your own peril, IMHO. Are you a risk taker/gambler ? If you are, then, as a bare minimum, I would at least?list somewhere in the file info/metadata description or comments all pertinent changes that were made.

Now, as to the definition of "pertinent"..............??? ; - )
that this guy's portfolio is made up from famous images or highly
circulated images from Prague that he copped.
>
> The agency wants 100 images portfolio for submission, but says
nothing about its stance on copping or faking photos---
>
>
> Normally I would send the links, but I'm not sure really what to do
because tracking the images I think are stolen takes time...
>
> When you live in Prague, you know which side of the bridge a
statue is on and recognize the buildings. when its the wrong building,
there's an instinctive double-take.
>
>
> do you guys report violations?
>
> I think I have several undeniable fakes or copped images I can send
to the agency from the same "photographer", but several I recognize
as works of other photographers.
>
> fakes as in strange composites... an object is where it doesn't
actually exist or the wrong building in background, or artificially
enhanced color to something that is aged bronze...
> major architectural elements removed from image, etc
>
>
> and if you see images you think are copped? do you inform the
agency or try to track back and find the photographer?
>
>
> is disturbing to me. this kind of stuff should not be selling as
exclusive RM licence.
> > I know some clients have a pay on publication deal with agencies. As
> lousy
>
> > as that is, it may explain the delay in reporting. The lead time
>
> > little as a few weeks with certain publications, it depends how
> Hi Peter,
>
>
>
> You are right. Alamy got back to me with the following reply:
>
>
>
> "Most publications confirm image usages by the end of the month of
>
> usage. Due to the sheer volume of images that these firms have to deal
>
> with, they find this a convenient option."
>
>
>
> Will you please get back to us with scanned copies of the usage if it
>
> remains un-invoiced by the end of October? We assure you that this
>
> issue will be taken care of by us then."
>
>
>
> Now I'm curious to see if it will actually be billed or not...
