announcements which appeared on public mailing lists but were not sent
to the Squeak Announcements mailing list. Ideally there would be no
need for this publication but use of the Announcements mailing list has
not quite settled in the community's unconscious. So if you have an
announcement and do not wish to suffer the fate of my terse summaries I
suggest you Cc announcements@... .
announcements which appeared on public mailing lists but were not sent
to the Squeak Announcements mailing list. Ideally there would be no
need for this publication but use of the Announcements mailing list has
not quite settled in the community's unconscious. So if you have an
announcement and do not wish to suffer the fate of my terse summaries I
suggest you Cc announcements@... .

The Weekly Squeak Summary No. 19: May 4 - Aug 16, 2008

Dear Squeakers,

welcome to this edition of The WeeklySqueakSummary, an irregular
traffic-dependent report on what's going on in the world of Squeak
based on the WeeklySqueak blog. It's been a rather long time since the
last issue because I've been on parental leave for two months...
anyway, here we go again with a slightly longer e-mail than usual.

Highlights of the past weeks:

First, some updates. Monticello 2 is out [36], and so is Swazoo 2.2
[32]. The former is essentially a complete re-write with an all-new
core versioning mechanism. The latter especially features faster
uploads. The popular "Squeak by Example" book has also been updated -
updated to be available in another language: French [4]!

Some interesting new projects have emerged: at Qwaq, Eliot Miranda is
building an improved Squeak VM called Cog [14]; and what started as a
coursework assignment at HPI to improve some of the functionality of
JSqueak [20] has been turned into a SourceForge-hosted project called
Potato [25]: a Squeak VM implemented in Java. Also an, albeit
different, VM, MagLev supports Ruby on top of GemStone/S [12].
SandstoneDB [28] is a simple OODBMS based on ideas from ActiveRecord
and Prevayler. Algernon [2] helps navigating the Squeak image.

The native widgets side of the universe has interesting news. After a
long time, wxSqueak has been updated [27] - let's hope it's come fully
back to life! SeasideXUL [5] uses the Firefox XULRunner to support
building GUIs, and one of this year's Squeak-related GSoC projects
[26] is SqueakGTK.

Squeak has been ported to two more platforms: the iPhone [16], and WiFiBots [7].

Last but certainly not least, congratulations to the CMSBox team for
winning an UI usability award [35]!
announcements which appeared on public mailing lists but were not sent
to the Squeak Announcements mailing list. Ideally there would be no
need for this publication but use of the Announcements mailing list has
not quite settled in the community's unconscious. So if you have an
announcement and do not wish to suffer the fate of my terse summaries I
suggest you Cc announcements@... .

Hi,

"HARU is a free, cross platform, open-sourced software library for generating PDF" - so why not use it from Squeak.

[1] includes a first rough version of a binding for the free Haru PDF library [2]. It's not fully complete but usable to start printing.
Use at your own risk and feel free to help moving it forward
(MIT License). The squeaksource repo is read/write.

See examples in class PDFDocument to get started. Since it uses
FFI an external library for your platform is required [2].
Place it next to your SqueakVM.

Happy printing

Bye
Torsten

http://lists.squeakfoundation.org/pipermail/squeak-dev/2008-May/128274.html

This periodic publication is meant to capture those Squeak related
announcements which appeared on public mailing lists but were not sent
to the Squeak Announcements mailing list.

18: Mar 23 - May 3, 2008

Dear Squeakers,

welcome to this edition of The WeeklySqueakSummary, an irregular
traffic-dependent report on what's going on in the world of Squeak
based on the WeeklySqueak blog. This is, by the way, the first edition
that is also sent to the AIDA mailing list - thanks for the
invitation!

Highlights of the past weeks:

Hilaire Fernandes is writing a series of blog entries that introduce
Squeak specifically to educators [10]. Material of this kind is
extremely welcome and much needed!

Two announcements have come true: first, Gilad Bracha's talk on
Newspeak, which he gave at HPI in Potsdam, is now available online [7]
(some trouble with viewing have been reported, but with a recent
player and no over-zealous firewall, viewing should be no problem).
Second, the Seaside tutorial hosted at HPI has been turned into a
book, which is finally available (the first book on Seaside, yay, and
please forgive the author his personal pride) [8].

Finally, there's three technical items.

Squeak is now available on yet another platform, namely the Syllable
OS [4]. At the time of posting, only headless images were supported,
but it ran Seaside.

JavaConnect and JNIPort [12] are two projects that support
Smalltalk/Java interoperability in very elegant ways. While they are
currently available only on VisualWorks (and, as for JNIPort,
Dolphin), they set standards in terms of language/platform
connectivity.

SqueakFS [13] allows for browsing the Squeak image as a mounted file
system (on Mac OS X and Linux, using the FUSE library). The top-level
directory supports looking at the image along one of three axes: along
the class hierarchy, grouped by class category, and as a flat space
containing all classes. At present, it's read-only, but future
extensions are already being planned.

The past weeks' news items:

[1] Seaside startup snapped up
    http://news.squeak.org/2008/03/28/seaside-startup-snapped-up/

[2] What's the difference?
    http://news.squeak.org/2008/03/31/whats-the-difference/

[3] The Year of Smalltalk

Was from squeak-dev, guess the [ANN] tag should be superflouous here!

Diff Tools are now available via the dev Universe and/or SqueakSource.

Excerpt:

"The Diff Tools consist of a set of morphs designed to present differences
between versions of methods in a presentable manner. Generally two methods
are presented side-by-side with highlighting, by lines, additions, removals
and changes.
Where there is a change, further highlighting is employed to identify the
changes within the affected lines."
announcements which appeared on public mailing lists but were not sent
to the Squeak Announcements mailing list. Ideally there would be no
need for this publication but use of the Announcements mailing list has
not quite settled in the community's unconscious. So if you have an
announcement and do not wish to suffer the fate of my terse summaries I
suggest you Cc announcements@... .

Dear Squeakers,

welcome to the Easter edition of The WeeklySqueakSummary, an irregular
traffic-dependent report on what's going on in the world of Squeak
based on the WeeklySqueak blog.

Highlights of the past weeks:

There is a whole bunch of very interesting (not just software)
releases... Squeak 3.10 [23], Sophie 1.0 [24], a multi-threaded Squeak
VM called Hydra [14], the Squeak by Example book's second edition
(nowadays, people tend to call such things 2.0 or the like... I prefer
to stick with the old-fashioned word "edition") [19], and a very
extensive book covering the (much more relevant than you might think)
topic of hashing [15].

The Squeak Foundation has a new board [17] - congratulations to all
board members (and to the community for their choices)!

Last time, I accidentally posted a "link" to a demo video of the
Lively kernel - it was just a link to an announcement. This happens if
you don't read carefully. :-) The actual video has since been released
[20].

Two notifications of acceptance: there will be more Google Summer of
Code projects related to Squeak [22], and the Squeak VM is now
officially deemed open source by the Debian maintainers [21].

That last topic (licensing issues) directly relates to the last "hot"
topic: the Software Freedom Law Center has released a guide to legal
issues as occurring in the context of open-source projects [11]. It's
an interesting read, but unfortunately very much focused on the legal
situation in the United States of America - well, you probably can't
blame them.

[ANN] New version of NamespacesBrowser, not announced.

Hi all.

I would like to announce a newer version of the NamespacesBrowser with a Namespaces implementation for Squeak.

However, this is not a real announcement. I can't get the package to load in 3.10. It's available from the UniversesBrowser in 3.10, but a bug somewhere, possibly in Monticello, means that classes in ToolBuilder-Kernel are not being properly recompiled so that bytecodes refer to the wrong instance variables. So... it's released, but it doesn't work :-). If you want to have a crack at getting it going, try recompiling all classes in ToolBuilder-Kernel.

This release introduces the concept of a versioned Package. This Packaging mechanism has been designed to ensure that code will be loaded and run in exactly the same environment that it was written and tested in. This is achieved by making inter-package dependencies based on exact versions of packages, and allowing multiple versions of the same package to be concurrently usable in an image.

This Namespaces implementation is a part of my SecureSqueak project. SecureSqueak is a project to create a Smalltalk environment based on Squeak which allows untrusted remotely loaded bytecodes to be executed in a secure sandboxed environment. SecureSqueak in turn is a component of my Unnamed Grand Project.

More information is available in the form of a brain dump at:
http://gulik.pbwiki.com/Unnamed+Grand+Project

Gulik.

Hi all Squeakers!

Ok, the Squeak Foundation Board Election 2008 ended 19 minutes ago -
promptly at 18.00 UTC, 8 March.

For this year we had 437 authorized voters of which 178 voted, that is
slightly more than 40% voting - a bit disappointing IMHO since we had
157 voting of 347 last year which gives above 45%.
On the other hand 178 is more than 157, so we had more voters and thus a
growing community, which of course is the most important aspect!

And without further ado I bring you the board for the following year
starting from NOW. The order reflects the ranking from the election:

1. Dan Ingalls
2. Craig Latta
3. Bert Freudenberg
4. Yoshiki Ohshima
5. Tim Rowledge
6. Randal L. Schwartz
7. Igor Stasenko

And thus the candidates left out are the following (also in ranked
order):

8. Giovanni Corriga
9. Edgar J. De Cleene
10. Andrew P. Black
11. Matthew Fulmer
12. Tansel Ersavas

For excrutiating details see:

        http://www.cs.cornell.edu/w8/~andru/cgi-perl/civs/results.pl?id=E_d38cc
27709a65b64

This also means that we say THANK YOU to Andrew Black, Cees de Groot and
Stéphane Ducasse for having served on the board the previous year.
Thanks guys!

And we also say welcome Dan, Randal and Igor to the board!

And thank YOU for voting and all the best to the new board! Viva la
Squeak!

regards, Göran Krampe

PS. And to you guys that didn't get on the board - hey, we all know that
the REAL WORK is done in the teams, right? :)
