Dana,

I just left West Marine and a 12V 25W was $16.95.

Thanks for a great source!

Lee,

The disparity seemed strange - the #96 bulb from bulbtown is about 9.5watts, not 25.  Bulbtown is still less than the Ancor #520068 thru West (8w) @2.99, but for two bulbs, not one.  Not a bad idea to carry a spare or two. I'm looking at West # 288771.  This brings up an interesting question though - what watt bulb would USCG consider adequate?  OE sidelites come as low as 5 watt.  Is the base with two contacts common to all of the R22s?

I spent some time making sure that the wattage of the bulbs that I bought matched the wattage of the bulbs that I took from the boat.  That's not to say they are correct; but they did match the old ones.

Issue of watts for side running lights, etc.

Dana,

Thank you for explaining to Art that you used comparable wattage.  Different manufacturers often put different wattage on the labels for essentially equivalent bulbs.  Sometimes there are patent or copyright issues that have to be waltzed around.

I would also point out that often a bulb is labeled 12 vdc and works fine in 6 vdc or 32 vdc.  What gives?  At those low voltages there is not a significant difference, at least as concerned with its ability to function appropriately.

Art,

How about going down to a couple of auto parts stores and compare the bulbs under discussion as to wattage and price, you know, enlighten us.

Now for some political comment:

Al Gore is now auditioning for another award.  He is saying that the polar ice cap is melting, that we should not drill for oil, yada yada.  Al, I am sorry in 10 years there will still be a need for oil.  It is an ingredient for many plastics.  Some of those plastics cannot be made from the alternative plastic sources.

He has yet to show any pictures of the North Pole and Greenland in the years 800 to 1000 A.D. when Greenland was Green.  Today we laugh at the name Greenland that the Vikings called the country.  However, as the glaciers retreat, they keep finding stone farm houses and barns under the retreating glaciers.

Al, is it possible that in 800 to 1000 A.D. Greenland was called such because it was green?  Has he shown that during that time there was an ice cover over the present location of the North Pole?  Al Gore is an arrogant dumb ass who does a disservice to us all.

Dana,
Thanks for this info.  Like I emailed to Lee, there are different wattage bulbs available, and the dirrerent intensity for each.  His 30 watt was quite different from your bulb, ergo the price difference significant.  Also, the quantity of 2 helps bring the Ancor price in line with yours.  I didn't doubt your checking your old bulb, but wanted to highlight this for Lee.  It may be more timely to use West than mailorder if in a pinch and the price isn't horrendous (sp?).
Chow,
Art
