Installer developed for Smarty

Hi all

I have developed a PHP browser-based installer for Smarty, which you can read about at http://www.medianna.eu/htdocs/warlock/warlock.en.php.

This installer does more than just installing the libraries! Just download a copy from http://www.medianna.eu/htdocs/warlock/downloads.en.php and see for yourself.

The installer is not finished as there's further development, bug fixes, removal of legacy code from early development and testing work to do; as well as code review. Nevertheless, the installer has undergone some test work and has been found to be capable of installing on Windows, Unix/Linux and shared (rented) servers.

The main reason for making this annoucement prior to completion of the installer, is that I require assistance from development engineers, testers and language translators to make it possible to release a production version.

I would also like ideas for an example website that is installed with Smarty, which covers more than Smarty as it is intended to show the integration with XHTML, CSS and have attributes that are typically required for professional web sites.

This installer has taken nearly one year in the making and I would be very glad to hear from anyone that would like to work with me to see it finished and to go in to production. I am also hopeful that there will be input to improve the product as it currently stands. Naturally, credit will be given where due!

Not sure when the old lists will die, hopefully not just yet...

Is it possible to subscribe to a Google Group using a non-Google email
address? I do have a Google account but want mailing list traffic to
come to my normal mail client as the old list did. I couldn't see a way
to do it from a quick search, but likely someone here knows the answer
and there's probably others like me who will now want to know.

I agree with that - whenever I do an assign it makes me feel somehow
grubby...

Another aspect is that chained method calls are already very commonly
used in Javascript libraries (particularly in JQuery, not so much with
Prototype), so those on the template side are fairly likely to have
encountered it.

I'm +1 for it, as well. I've tended to walk the line between what others
perceive as acceptable template usage and I've passed quite a few objects
into templates to be accessible should the template need the data there-in.
A good example is a user object. But what if the user object has a company
object? $user->getCompany()->getCompanyName(). I don't think that'd be
breaking too many accepted conventions. And to compare to other templating
engines, I believe Velocity supports such syntax.

I personally see this opening more doors than it would cause problems,
myself. It's adding optional support that, in its absence, might require
people to assign temporary Smarty variables- an ugly process in and of
itself.

I understand this point of view and I do have sympathy; however, I
fundamentally disagree that chained-method calls represent a data-structure.
This is actually part of my main objection to their inclusion. Data structures
are static representations while method calls are inherently non-static. I
realize, of course, that many use the semantics of either in an interchangeable
way -- but I think that unwise at this level. Never-the-less, Mark makes some
reasonable proposals. Still, the slope is slippery.

BTW, I don't think their are "two types of template designers". I rather think
that there are several ways to structure an application and only some of those
strategies lead to reasonably scalable and abstracted code artifacts.

Anyways, I've written too much on this in too many places. I'll leave this for
others to decide :)

In terms of syntax/semantics, I still think this leads to a poor way of
building templates; similarly, I don't think var-vars add useful machinery to
template syntax/semantics and I hope that despite many requests, we don't
consider adding such a "feature".

Yes, PHP allows it. It makes it easier to submit application variables to
templates for raw usage. Neither of those seem to me to be good arguments for
the inclusion of chained method calls. What I see this as is just another way
for application programmers to download complexity into templates so that they
can reduce the amount of code they have to write to interface with the
templates. At least, that's what it looks like from my little pigeon hole.

I'm personally -1, but I'm too tired to continue trying to convince anyone
regarding this :)

Hi Ben,

To my knowledge you can't do that. Smarty is executed in a linear manner
(same as php - I do not think your example would work in php either).

I think I imagine your problem - you would like to display something
let's say at the top of the page, but you do not have access to it until
later. I guess, if this is the case, you will need some architectural
decision, which to provide you with this information at an earlier point.

What do you see?

Something or nothing (white page, with nothing in 'page source')?

The Smarty people insist that Smarty has proper error reporting, however
I experience white page without 'page source' in several situation -

a) Check the permissions of the template folder/files and the
permissions of the templates_c/cache folders, the web server should be
able to read/write there.

b) It helps sometimes to clean up cache/templates_c.

c) Not properly closing certain Smarty tags, like {strip}, {if} - your
example has several {if}s.

Perhaps if you are more specific with what exactly happens, you will get
more help.

(chained method calls) was not present... Hopefully, after 2 minutes
searching at google, I found this patch:

Is there any possibility to include this patch into the engine??
I think this will be very usefull :)

I don't know how much impact this can bring to the entire

Hello,

I don't think we should HTTP header handling in the Smarty core, it is
always easy to create a View class which handle all sort of HTTP
header handling.

Especially these functions didn't work with PHP4, which is bad.

I agree with the notion that the headers are as much a part of the response
as the HTML, itself.
However; is it the entire response that Smarty is caching or just the HTML
of the response-to-be?

By placing these headers in the cached content, you're making that choice
for the programmer. I do think allowing this would be useful, but it should
be an optional behavior. Maybe a new Smarty method called "cacheHeaders()"
or some such?

Sure, I'd be happy to. The particular case that I ran into had to do
with enabling client-side caching using the Cache-Control HTTP
header. In my PHP code, I used something like the following:
header("Cache-Control: max-age=21600, public");

That header call was in PHP code that only gets run when the smarty
cache does not already exist. Therefore, when there is no cached file
for this request, that header() gets called along with additional PHP
code. However, any subsequent requests will be served from the Smarty
cache, which returns only the content that I had sent previously, but
not the headers.

Without my patch, Smarty simply caches the content of the HTTP
response. In most cases this is sufficient. However, the HTTP
headers _and_ the content are what define an HTTP response, not just
the content. My patch adds caching of the HTTP headers used in the
response alongside the content.

I only can think of one exception, namely object iterator support which was
added for PHP5 users; however, that was done without resorting to a PHP version
compare, IIR.

FWIW, I'm not against supporting this change either since it seems to have no
impact on PHP4 users except for the version check (which I do dislike). I'd
likely also support other PHP5 specific changes that can be done silently while
also avoiding template syntax or parsing changes.

That said, Luke, can you give more detail on why this is important? Thanks!

Ah yes, here's the text of the patch. This is just an added bonus
feature for people using PHP5. If applied, Smarty will still work as

i was not talking about Smarty requirements, i was talking about features
working only with specific versions of PHP like the above mentioned

Smarty-2.x requires php-4.0.6 or later. this requirement has never been weakened.

i remember, in teh past patches that do add functionality for only a
specific PHP version where not accepted, did Smarty devs changed this policy?

(beside th fact that i did never understood why)

Making Smarty's cache HTTP header aware

Hi,

Currently, when Smarty caches content it has no knowledge of the HTTP
headers that the script served to the client. In the case where the
cache is cleared and the action sends special HTTP headers to the
client, those HTTP headers only get sent on the first response and
subsequent responses read from the cache and don't send the HTTP
headers.

PHP5 provides the headers_list() function, so I've modified Smarty to
include that information in the cache meta-data and pass those headers
onto the client it when the headers are available in the meta-data.
This feature is PHP5 only, but will not break PHP4 code.

Attached is the changes I made against Smarty 2.6.18. I'd appreciate
consideration for adding these changes to the Smarty core.

{assign_by_ref} or sth. similar in a template

Hi folks,

sorry for the maybe misleading subject. My problem is, I want to
display a variable in a template, that's value

is assigned later in the template, e.g.
{$mytext}

{include file="test.tpl}
test.tpl contains anywhere
{assign var="mytext" value="sometexthere"}
but this does not work, with a test to add {$mytext} behind the
assignline, show, that the vriable only exists after the assignment.

so the question is is there something like a assign_by_ref inside
the template, where the var is assigned before it gets filled with
the real content

and filled with the real content later?

I got this kind of failure when I did not configure date.timezone in
my php.ini. A newer php does throw an E_STRICT then - overriding the
expected E_USER_WARNING.

If this does not fix your case, store all error info in the error
handler ($this->error = func_get_args()) and dump this error info from
test_core_is_secure_function_smarty_var_const_not_allowed() in
test_cases.php to see, what causes the unexpected 2(== E_WARNING).

Are you sure the errors are coming from smarty? One frustrating error I
found in when migrating php4 to php5 involved class files. If you define
the same class variable twice under php5, the script fails without
error. PHP4 forgives this error so you wouldn't see any problem before
migration.
