For anyone else who encounters a slow
GUI with the SSG models the solution was an upgraded OS. The unit
was shipped with 6.0.xxxx. Once I upgraded it to 6.1 the GUI interface
worked at a normal speed.

If you come up with a solution to this, I'll be interested
to hear what it is. I have a couple of old 5GTs which
behave in the same manner - takes a LONG time for the
menus to build when logging in from the Untrusted side.
On the trust side, it's very snappy.
