Shifter Question

Just got my 87 Yamaha Virago.  This is my first bike and I am jsut confused with the shifter.  From Neutral I go down to 1st then up to second and so on.  But after that I cant get it back to neutral until I shut the motor off.  the Bike goes from first to second then back to one but if i turn it off one shift and its into neutral.  Help Please

The only time I use neutral is when starting and shuting off the bike.Shift down once and shift up three times.Shift down each gear as needed. Don't understand when you say it shifts up to second and then back down to first.Are you saying it won't shift up thru third and fourth gears ?

I am trying to say that, when the bike is off, i shift up from first to get the neutral, and down from second to get to neutral.  But when the bike is running, going up one from first goes to second, and down from second goes to first.... I cant find neutral when running.

Sometimes before shutting the bike down I have problems finding neutral , I just play with the shiffter by moving it up and down until it goes in.

so its ok not to be able to find neutral at all when running? seems odd.  Also when off and in gear, if you pull the clutch all the way in does the bike roll as easy as in neutral, or should you feel some resistance as iff the clutch isnt fully disengaged?  Thanks

There should be no resistance moving the bike with clutch engage , if so then your clutch cable needs adjusted , same with transmission if you can't go into neutral when idleing.
I brought my 2006 new and had to have my transmission adjusted because I had problems going into first gear every time I came to traffic light.
