Signal Oil and Gas - High oil prices rekindle oil production in Mo.

Pumpjacks, the oil rigs that resemble those thirsty bird toys, are
going up in Missouri for the first time in two decades, the latest
region to revive a long-faded industry as crude nears $130 a barrel.

The sky-high price of oil has turned extraction methods recently
considered cost-prohibitive into cash cows.

Bright blue pumpjacks stand over a 10-acre site near the
Missouri-Kansas border where MegaWest Energy Corp., a Canadian
company, is attempting to draw heavy oil — as thick as molasses, and
requiring better technology and extra effort to pull from the ground.

The domestic oil revival is taking place in smaller oil fields that
require new technology, said Fred Lawrence, vice president of
economics and international affairs at the Independent Petroleum
Association of America.

"We've been producing oil in this country for parts of three
centuries. So a lot of the easy oil is gone," Lawrence said.

The hunt for harder-to-get oil, however, is under way.

"The Baker-Hughes rig count for the week of April 25 showed 360 rigs
drilling for oil versus 283 the same week a year ago," Lawrence said.
"That gives you a sense of the reinvigoration of crude oil in the
U.S."

Heavy oil production in Missouri ended in the 1980s when oil prices
went into a long decline.

Oil could not be sold for the money it costs to produce in places like
Missouri. But with light, sweet crude reaching a record $126.98 a
barrel Tuesday on the New York Mercantile Exchange, smaller oil
companies like MegaWest are returning to abandoned reserves in
Missouri, Kansas and Oklahoma.

"There's a fair amount of heavy oil in Missouri and elsewhere in the
U.S. that has not been addressed since the late 1970s and early 1980s
because of low crude prices," said George Stapleton, chief executive
of MegaWest.

Oil and gas well permitting in Pennsylvania is booming, as large
exploration companies from as far away as Houston and Calgary expand
the horizons of traditional drilling grounds there.

The lure for those companies is Appalachia's relatively unexplored and
deep veins of natural gas that are close to major cities like New York
and Philadelphia.

There is also more money going into oilsands operations in Alberta,
Canada, home to vast reserves of a tar-like bitumen that is extracted
using mining techniques. Industry officials estimate the region will
yield as much as 175 billion barrels of oil, making Canada second only
to Saudi Arabia in crude oil reserves.

In North Dakota, rising crude prices have helped increase drilling for
oil trapped in deep rock layers, part of the so-called Bakken
Formation that also extends under Montana, Saskatchewan and Manitoba.
To get the oil, companies have to drill expensive wells that reach for
miles, fracturing the rock to release the oil trapped in microscopic
pores.

MegaWest is using thermal technology to extract heavy oil from depths
of more than 200 feet. It injects 400-degree steam deep into the
ground to loosen the viscous oil and pressure it out through bore
holes serviced by the pumpjacks.

Its 10-acre field is the first stage of a project that will produce up
to 100,000 barrels of oil over the next two years, MegaWest says.
Average production will be 220 barrels of oil per day. A barrel equals
42 gallons.

Stapleton said the oil will be sold to a refinery in nearby
Coffeyville, Kan., at a price about 80 to 85 percent of the market
price for benchmark West Texas light crude. Heavy oil sells for less
because it's harder to refine than light crude.

Signal Oil and Gas - MegaWest started injecting steam in March to
"melt our way into the formation, so to speak," said Jim Long,
operations manager at the site. He expects to start producing oil
around late May.

MegaWest has oil rights on over 8,000 acres in Missouri's Vernon
County, part of holdings totaling more than 110,000 acres in five
states including Missouri, Kansas, Kentucky, Texas and Montana.

CEO George Stapleton says MegaWest can turn a profit as long as oil
prices stay above $40 to $45 a barrel.

"Roughly half of every dollar above that we are able to capture as
part of our net profit. At $100 a barrel, our profit is about $30 a
barrel. That's attractive and that's why we're doing it," he said.

Vernon County sits on an estimated 1.8 billion barrels of heavy oil,
Stapleton said — a trickle compared to the huge foreign reserves that
feed the global oil market. The world's largest oil field, Saudi
Arabia's 1,260-square mile Ghawar, has estimated remaining reserves of
70 billion barrels, according to the U.S. government's Energy
Information Administration.

James Van Blaricum - Total reserves in the lower 48 U.S. states,
excluding Alaska and offshore fields, are about 17 billion barrels,
the government agency estimates.

But every little bit helps in an era of tightening oil supplies, said
Lawrence from the petroleum association.

"You have to look at these marginal wells in the U.S. as definitely
making a difference given the fact that we're importing over 60
percent of the crude we consume," he said.

The U.S. uses an estimated 20 million barrels of oil a day. Stapleton
from MegaWest said his Missouri fields will produce somewhere around
350 million barrels over a 20-year span, or the rough equivalent of 35
days of current U.S. imports.

It's not a panacea, but it helps to provide price stability and secure
supply lines at home, he said.

Innovation can be a double edged sword. For every Audi Quattro, Toyota Prius or Renault Scenic there are the Jensen FFs, Honda Insights and Nissan Prairies cars that were first to market but never quite captured the publics imagination in the same fashion. Latterly it has been French manufacturers who have seemed most willing to embrace new market niches, but Mercedes-Benz, traditionally one of the more conservative companies, have something to make all of us sit up and take notice in the R-Class Grand Sports Tourer.

The top brass at Mercedes noted that while many of their customers liked the space and utility of cars like the M-Class 4x4, they didnt much care for the ride quality or the handling that is inherent in any dual-purpose vehicle. What if the stance and road manners of a luxury saloon could be combined with the versatility of a 4x4 or an MPV-style vehicle? Thats the reasoning behind the R-Class, but it has some significant hurdles to overcome. Its estimated that at least 60 per cent of all R-Class sales will come from the US, a motoring culture that has traditionally seen anything without a boot as being only good for shopping, picking up kids or rock hopping. This culture is slowly changing with the advent of high end SUV sports utility vehicles but the R-Class boldly teases this development in a new direction.

Wealthy private customers with growing families have found their needs unmet by saloon cars or rather frumpy MPVs. The social stigma that increasingly surrounds big 4x4 vehicles has opened the way for a vehicle like the R-Class but will it prove a hit, miss or maybe? Priced from just under £40,000 and measuring fully 5,157mm from nose to tail in long wheelbase form, theres nothing apologetic about the R-Class. In fact, its even longer than an S-Class limousine but offers space for upto seven inside with around 64 per cent of the vehicles body length available for its occupants. Think of the long bonnet and boot of a saloon car in this class and you begin to appreciate that Mercedes may be on to something here.

Short wheelbase derivatives are also offered where theres a choice of five or seven seats. The five seat versions ditch the rear row in favour of a larger boot but sacrificing two berths really diminishes the vehicles practicality. A number of enticing options are offered, such as the remote control open and close function for the tailgate, the Luxury Climate Control with over a dozen sensors and a separate air-conditioning unit for the third row of seats. A separate DVD/CD player for the rear and a panoramic sunroof will also make you very popular with the offspring.

The R-Class isnt all about the expensive options, however, and all models feature a very extensive standard equipment list. Engine outputs range from 190bhp up to 388bhp, the V8 powerplant under the bonnet of the R500 propels it from standstill to 60 mph in just 6.3 seconds and on to an artificially limited top speed of 155mph. Also to be found in the engine line-up are two six-cylinder diesel power units with advanced common-rail, direct-injection technology, whose credentials include improved fuel consumption, even lower exhaust emissions and an audible improvement in refinement.

The larger V6 oil-burning engine places its class-beating peak torque of 510Nm on tap from as low down as 1,600rpm. The average fuel consumption figures returned by the R320 CDI are no less astounding: 30.4 mpg. The smaller 2.8-litre CDI diesel forms the entry-point to the range with 440Nm and fractionally better economy of 30.

7mpg. All engine models are partnered as standard by the 7G-TRONIC seven-speed automatic transmission, which itself comes with an interesting feature in the form of Direct Select. This electronic transmission control system has allowed Mercedes engineers to dispense with the conventional automatic selector lever in the centre console and to replace it instead with a lever on the steering column. Additional gearshift buttons on the steering wheel enable drivers to manually pre-select the seven forward gears, just like in a Formula One racing car.

This allows the power reserves of the six and eight-cylinder engines to be harnessed to optimum effect in any driving situation. Permanent all-wheel drive, the electronically controlled 4ETS traction system and ESP team up to offer peerless driving safety and keep the new R-Class safely on course, even in very bad road conditions. These systems all make up part of the vehicle's standard specification, as does air suspension at the rear axle. Although there arent too many letters of the alphabet left for Mercedes to exploit, if the R-Class is anything to go by, the brains at Stuttgart will continue to sniff out new market niches worth plundering. The jurys still out on whether this vehicle will be a success or a failure but its a bold move that merits the plaudits.

Two hours later, their brain waves were measured, and this time the p300 rate was significantly faster in the group given the DHA supplements, supporting their hypothesis that DHA may actually enhance mental abilities in adults as well.
Omega-3 Fatty Acids and Heart Health:
Researchers at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center have reported that docosapentaenoic acid (DPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), a primary component of fish oil, provides protection against the development of coronary heart disease (CHD). Their study involved over 6,000 middle-aged men who had samples of their blood taken between 1973 and 1976. Jerry Katzman MD During the next 7 years, 94 of these men had a heart attack or died suddenly due to heart disease. The 94 men were matched with 94 healthy men and the fatty acid profile of their blood samples compared. The researchers found that the 94 men with heart disease had a higher serum level of the saturated fatty acid palmitic acid and conclude that a high level of this acid increases the risk of CHD by 68 percent. Palmitic acid is the main saturated fatty acid in most diets. This acid is known to cause worse both total cholesterol and low-density cholesterol levels; the researchers, however found that the detrimental effect of a high intake of palmitic acid persisted even after allowing for its cholesterol- increasing effect.MD Jerry Katzman Researchers determined that men with a higher blood level of the Omega-3 unsaturated fatty acids, docosapentaenoic acid and docosahexaenoic acid had an almost 50% lower risk of developing heart disease than did men with lower levels. The researchers also found that men with CHD had a higher serum level of Omega-6 fatty acids derived from linoleic acid, but were unable to confirm previous reports that these acids are linked to a heightened risk of CHD.

Studies show that populations who eat fish versus those who do not, have a reduced death rate from cardiovascular disease. Experimental studies have shown that Omega-3 fatty acids affect the function of cells involved in atherothrombosis in numerous ways, including the modification of eicosanoid products in the cyclooxygenase and lipoxygenase pathways, the reduced synthesis of cytokines and platelet-derived growth factor, and alterations of leukocyte and endothelial cell properties. Intervention studies in patients with restenosis, myocardial infarction, and cardiac arrhythmias with Omega-3 fatty acid supplementation have been performed in several clinical studies to date.
Consuming Omega-3 fatty acids following one episode of myocardial infarction appears to decrease the rate of cardiac death. According to the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO) fish oil protects eyes from age-related macular degeneration.
National Eye Institute researcher and colleagues analyzed dietary data from 4,513 60- to 80-year-old participants in the Age-Related Eye Disease Study. Those who ate fish more than twice a week were half as likely to get macular degeneration as those who ate no fish at all. More than one weekly portion of broiled/baked fish or tuna lowered the risk by a third.
In a second study, Eye Research Institute, and colleagues asked whether fish oil protects from dry eye syndrome. Dry eye syndrome is when a person's eyes don't make enough tears. This can lead to scarring of the cornea and vision loss analyzed data from 32,470 female health professionals in the huge Women's Health Study. They found that women whose diets had the most omega-3 fatty acids -- as measured by how much fish they ate -- were least likely to have dry eye syndrome. Those whose diets had the most fish oil were less likely to have dry eye syndrome than those whose diets had the least fish oil.

I want to the carter eye canter at the beginning of last year and they told me all about the 'NEW' technology they had with lasik and to make a very long story short after I got the procedure and studied what it was after it was taking me longer to see well and I found out it was just the same old blade lasik that they claimed they were not going to do on me. LASIK stands for Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis and is a procedure that permanently changes the shape of the cornea, the clear covering of the front of the eye, using an excimer laser. The cornea is a part of the eye that helps focus light to create an image on the retina. It works in much the same way that the lens of a camera focuses light to create an image on film. The bending and focusing of light is also known as refraction. Usually the shape of the cornea and the eye are not perfect and the image on the retina is out-of-focus (blurred) or distorted. These imperfections in the focusing power of the eye are called refractive errors. There are three primary types of refractive errors: myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism. Persons with myopia, or nearsightedness, have more difficulty seeing distant objects as clearly as near objects. Persons with hyperopia, or farsightedness, have more difficulty seeing near objects as clearly as distant objects. Astigmatism is a distortion of the image on the retina caused by irregularities in the cornea or lens of the eye. Combinations of myopia and astigmatism or hyperopia and astigmatism are common. Glasses or contact lenses are designed to compensate for the eye's imperfections. Surgical procedures aimed at improving the focusing power of the eye are called refractive surgery. In LASIK surgery, precise and controlled removal of corneal tissue by a special laser reshapes the cornea changing its focusing power.

Other types of refractive surgery
Radial Keratotomy or RK and Photorefractive Keratectomy or PRK are other refractive surgeries used to reshape the cornea. In RK, a very sharp knife is used to cut slits in the cornea changing its shape. PRK was the first surgical procedure developed to reshape the cornea, by sculpting, using a laser. Later, LASIK was developed. The same type of laser is used for LASIK and PRK. Often the exact same laser is used for the two types of surgery. The major difference between the two surgeries is the way that the stroma, the middle layer of the cornea, is exposed before it is vaporized with the laser. In PRK, the top layer of the cornea, called the epithelium, is scraped away to expose the stromal layer underneath. In LASIK, a flap is cut in the stromal layer and the flap is folded back.

Another type of refractive surgery is thermokeratoplasty in which heat is used to reshape the cornea. The source of the heat can be a laser, but it is a different kind of laser than is used for LASIK and PRK. Other refractive devices include corneal ring segments that are inserted into the stroma and special contact lenses that temporarily reshape the cornea (orthokeratology).

Dallas Lasik ,the surgery should take less than 30 minutes. You will lie on your back in a reclining chair in an exam room containing the laser system. The laser system includes a large machine with a microscope attached to it and a computer screen.
A numbing drop will be placed in your eye, the area around your eye will be cleaned, and an instrument called a lid speculum will be used to hold your eyelids open. A ring will be placed on your eye and very high pressures will be applied to create suction to the cornea. Your vision will dim while the suction ring is on and you may feel the pressure and experience some discomfort during this part of the procedure. The microkeratome, a cutting instrument, is attached to the suction ring.
