I wrote the below post earlier today regarding how SCIM is not functioning in Hardy. But now, quite mysteriously, it has started to work perfectly. I have booted up the computer several times since writing the post, and there was no change. But now--in the middle of my work during one session, I have noted that the toolbar is present in the lower right-hand corner of the screen and it was not there before. I clicked on it, and SCIM burst into life. So if it stays this way, then my problem is solved. I only knew why it wasn't working in the beginning and why it mysteriously has started to work now.

I've been using SCIM in Ubuntu Feisty (7.04) for around a year, with no problems at all. Now I've installed Ubuntu Hardy (8.04) in my computer, and SCIM is not working.
I downloaded and installed all the various languages I need such as Hindi and Bengali. In the SCIM setup menu, I set the SCIM icon to appear always on the toolbar. And I left the toggle switch as being set at "ctrl-space". Now the SCIM icon is indeed appearing on the upper panel of the desktop as it should. But it is a mere picture, it has no function. When OO Writer is open and you click on the SCIM icon on the upper panel of the desktop, there should be a drop-down menu of available languages. But no such menu appears, nothing at all happens. And when you do ctrl-space, that should activate SCIM for your chosen language. But it doesn't happen. Nothing at all happen.
And the SCIM icon on the upper panel, it doesn't have the color-change responsiveness of a normal icon. When you slide the cursor over it, it doesn't light up like other icons do. It just sits there like a picture plastered on my desktop. The SCIM icon in my Feisty install is not like that. When you slide the cursor over it, it lights up and a different color outline appears around the edges of the icon.
So how can I get SCIM working in Ubuntu Hardy?
