We already have some users using SCIM for inputting Chinese, so memory
usage should not be a major problem. However, probably I have to look
at making a sane package selection (we have limited space on the flash
device that we use for a hard disk).

I'll probably try to come up a rudimentary XKB->scim table converter
by the next week. However, I'm not sure how to handle keys for the
Alt-Gr characters (for example: the keyboard we have designed for
Haiti[1] has the Euro sign bound to "Alt-Gr E"). Any suggestions ?

I think so.

I don't know of any tool to convert xkb maps to (or from) scim-tables or m17n maps but such a tool would be very useful.

SCIM in the OLPC XO-1

Hello,
We are considering a switch to SCIM for the next OLPC OS release (due
to be released in the first quarter of 2009). We currently use XKB,
and there is a dedicated "switch" key on the keyboard which lets us
switch the keyboard layouts. We do not want the user experience to
change, and to keep things as simple as possible, and hence we are
trying to avoid the SCIM panel. Instead, we are planning on using
scim-config-agent to configure SCIM once during first boot, and then
launch SCIM automatically with Sugar.
Does this sound like a doable plan ?
I have been searching for some documentation on scim-config-agent, and
unfortunately, I could not find any. Any pointers to any kind of
resources would be helpful :-)

Also, we have a significant number of keyboards layouts defined in
XKB[1] - is there any way to reutilize the work already done when we
switch to SCIM ?

Initial Comment:
Hello,
I've been developing my library for scim, and so far it works great. However, there is one small glitch: I can't seem to show an empty lookup table. If I have:

MyLookupTable lookup;
update_lookup_table(lookup);
show_lookup_table();

...Then the lookup table bar appears, with no options in it (as expected). If I then select something:
doSomethingThatChanges(lookup);
update_lookup_table(lookup);
show_lookup_table();

..the change appears, also as expected. But if I then do:
lookup.clear();
update_lookup_table(lookup);
show_lookup_table();

...then the old entry remains. I have some evidence that this is a glitch in SCIM, not in my code: Instead of lookup.clear(), I do the following:
update_lookup_table(blank_lookup);
show_lookup_table();

...where "blank_lookup" is just another new instance of "MyLookupTable". I am guessing that SCIM simply doesn't re-render if there are no lookup options.

I already have a workaround(add a default entry with just one space) but I thought I'd let you all know. Is this a bug in SCIM, or am I doing something wrong in my code? I'd appreciate your input.

PS: I'm running SCIM on Ubuntu hardy heron, installed from the package binary, and invoked normally. I have tested this on several systems and confirmed its behavior on all of them.

iBus - the new input framework

It is almost completed, and it already has several engines (Chinese
PinYin, Chinese Chewing, Japanese Anthy, Korean Hangul, M17n and
general table engines). It can also support gtk, qt4 and XIM

I've found an input method called

that is similar to stroke5, but it provides five more stroke types, which greatly reduces ambiguity (thus increases input speed) without making users to remember too many stroke types.

Unfortunately the implementation by the original developer is proprietary. It would be nice to have a 3rd party implementation of the freefire table included in the scim system

Thank you. I haven't known that scim-m17n switched to svn.

I checked out scim-m17n according to the instruction in this page:
http://www.scim-im.org/development/cvs_svn
by this command:

% svn co https://scim.svn.sourceforge.net/svnroot/scim scim-m17n

But, with that, what I got was these whole dirs/files:

% ls scim-m17n

How can I help improve traditional Chinese support?

Can anyone please tell me how I can get involved? From what I've read elsewhere, it sounds like the traditional tables are produced automatically (on-the-fly?) using the simplified tables. Perhaps I could help either by attempting to improve the mapping from simplified to traditional, or if possible, using that mapping as a starting point and then manually combing out errors.

Just let me know what I can do :)

understanding of the code of scim

hi,
i want to run scim on a hand held computer
that has support for c, c++, X programming and linux kernel. But does not have support for GTK. As gtk would make lot slower.
So any one can suggest me what part of scim code i have to change in order to run scim on that machine. Or else can
one suggest me how to get devel-doc of scim.

I'm not sure how the internals of the Smart Pinyin method work, but I
believe what Wikimedia does is do a best-effort conversion by using a
conversion table, and for each case where the conversion turns out
wrong, the word is either manually corrected through some special
mark-up on the page or added to the table.

I'd be interested in knowing how SCIM's filter differentiates between
these merged characters, though...

I don't know much about the filter feature.
I tested the filter long time ago, and I succeeded.
I guess, it may have some bugs.
Try it on other locale, such as zh_CN.UTF-8.

Thanks for the feedback. I've looked into the mapping problem once a long time ago in order to help get a dictionary website I really liked (adsotrans.com) better support for traditional. At the time there were not very many solutions for handling it. I've noticed since then though that some people have at least started to solve the problem (e.g. Wikipedia http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Automatic_conversion_between_simplified_and_traditional_Chinese).

Do you know how the tables are currently handled? Are the simplified tables simply converted in some lossy manner to traditional ones? Also, do you know if it's possible for user-corrected data to be used to build better tables? That is, If I use the traditional style smart pinyin input a lot, it's character prediction will start to get better. Could this data then be used (from one, or possibly many users) to improve the tables?

Scim's filter feature will be a solution for you.

Run scim-setup.
Select IMEngine - Global Setup and select smart pinyin.
Click "Select Filters" button.
Then, you can select TC<->SC filter.
This filter will make you see the lookup string in TC and input TC.

The biggest problem would probably be that a number of simplified
Chinese characters map to any of several traditional Chinese
characters, so that any word containing even one of those characters
would have to be typed in manually. This is hardly true of any
characters when converting from simplified to traditional Chinese, so
it's too bad the data aren't in traditional Chinese originally.

Another problem is that some words, especially foreign names but also
Chinese words, differ between the mainland and the areas where
traditional Chinese is or has been used. An input method geared towards
mainland users might not contain the words used in other variants of
Mandarin Chinese, so those would have to be added from another source.

So in other words, it's doable, but not trivial...?

Initial Comment:
version 1.4.6 seems to display problem that i did not experience in previous versions. certain websites would stop input after each refresh. I have to minimize firefox and maximize it back in order to launch key input again by ctrl-space.

example website:

under that website, it supposedly would show definition for entered hangul in each blank. after each display of definition, I could not initiate key input by ctrl-space. Only by minimizing and maximzing browser would i be able to restore normality. Everytime a new definition shows i would have to repeat these steps to enable key input.

It only happens with certain websites. some websites have no such issues. Previous version of scim showed no such issues at all.

Problem on setup Traditional Chinese input

Hi folks,

Ubuntu 8.04 Desktop amd64

I followed SCIM;

to setup Chinese Input without success.

Ctrl+Space can switch English/European ON/OFF

Ctrl+Shift can switch RAW CODE Unicode ON/OFF

No Chinese input method found.

Only Scim and scim-gtk2-immodule installed. No ttf fonts and xfont found.

Please help. TIA

Summary: scim starts with every GTK app

Initial Comment:
I exited from scim. When I launch Firefox scim starts automatically.

This feature should be optional because not all users want this.

Once I quit scim it shouldn't automatically start with the start of any IM-enabled app.
