> Well, the main thing I'd likely be interested in is integration with
> KDE's color scheme. (I'd also like to see Qt pick up more of it, but
> that seems unlikely, at least in the short term.)

This is one I don't really know much about in practice, but part of the theory
behind Qt4 was that it was supposed to pick up more of the look and feel of
wherever it was, and do a better job of blending than Qt3 did.

Back when I hung out on Ubuntu Studio Users, there was a large and vocal
faction that really seemed eager to see a pure Qt4 Rosegarden, because it
would blend in more seamlessly with their favorite desktop.

As far as that goes, I've had a pet idea for a long time to follow the
Hydrogen model, and just define our own look and feel. They exercise a high
degree of control over their own colors, buttons, and pretty well everything
except the main window decorations, and they don't have to worry about
lookind different here there or anywhere. That kind of idea could work if we
came up with a universally acceptable look, and all of this runs directly
counter to your wanting to make an effort to pull our colors from KDE4 if
it's running.

Pulling our colors from KDE seems to be the current state of affairs, and I've
seen this as a mixed bag over the years. I take more screenshots than
anybody, and having the look of my Rosegarden vary with my mood on a given
day does pose minor but irritating problems for me that probably wouldn't
affect ordinary users. Just because I'm not an ordinary user though, I still
vote in favor of making my own job as easy as possible. :)

Another issue is with our black icons. We have a lot of black icons, and
they're invisible against black backgrounds. Users can pick black
backgrounds, and make our icons invisible. We've never been able to come up
with a decent solution for that in terms of tweaking the icon set, and
controlling everything about our own presentation could definitely be a
solution.

> But there are other
> possibilities; imagine opening a document with a few staves of music and
> clicking on it, and up pops RG!

Can you explain this in more detail? I don't follow.

> There's also little things, like getting Oxygen (or whatever theme is in
> use) icons cheaply, KDE standard actions, etc.

One complication to think about in all of that is that if we're even primarily
a Qt application, we have to do all of that sort of thing one way, and if
we're a KDE application, we have to do it another, different way. One of the
advantages Chris and others are advocating for this switch is that we get to
bundle all of our resources in one place, and we no longer have to deal with
issues like SuSE installs our help in some stupid place for a mysterious
reason, and so forth.
>
> The main idea is to have a widget to control plugin parameters
> automatically, drawing a line in an associated track, something like the
> timer rule. 'Cause I want to control not only the tempo, but things like
> an oscillator frequency, filter cut frequencies, etc
>
>....

> I'd be glad if someone had more insights about it. I really like this
> software and may help on the Qt4 porting, but first I want to get used
> to the source code and implementing this idea might be a good way.
>

It might be a good idea, to wait with this,
until we have the base of Qt4 working.

My idea is to
- first implement the possibility to modify audio-volume with midi-controllers
- then think about how the controller data would be best stored
- finally create a controll-bar. I think, we could use the same bar (place),
that's being used for velocity values (?)
For example, one could specify to have a ruler for
controller nr. 019 and draw the values then.

How would the plugins be controlled with the controller values ?
Are they using midi or osc ?
That might require a midi to osc mapping.
> Apologies. Perhaps we should seriously consider configuring it to

> (What did the message say? For what it's worth, KLed is just about

The answer to kdefx is QImageBlitz, if the new stuff in QPainter isn't
I thought this was mentioned in kde4porting... (As the dev that gave
>> My problem with moving away from KDE is that a: it means I can't work on
>> KDE integration (which is what I probably would have been most
>> interested in),
>>
> Could you describe a little, what desktop integration means
> to you (or KDE), please?! I'm not clear about it.

Well, the main thing I'd likely be interested in is integration with
KDE's color scheme. (I'd also like to see Qt pick up more of it, but
that seems unlikely, at least in the short term.) But there are other
possibilities; imagine opening a document with a few staves of music and
clicking on it, and up pops RG! (I think KOffice already has something
for music editing, but I think it's young, and therefore not likely to
be as featureful.)

There's also little things, like getting Oxygen (or whatever theme is in
use) icons cheaply, KDE standard actions, etc.

And, honestly, there's an extent to which I can't answer that. Maybe, in
the end I'll decide I don't care, but knowing that people aren't
dead-set against it helps a lot :-).

> Is being a KDE app the only way to integrate it into the KDE desktop ?

Technically, you can /always/ implement the same functionality yourself,
it's just a lot more work.
> Yves has been handling these, I believe by using QDialog and
> QDialogButtonBox directly.

I only manually finished what Michael started in convert.pl script.
Perhaps some better solution exists, but this one works : I tested some of the
ported dialogs by inserting them in a framework got from Qt4 examples.

> So I'd say we should continue with QDialog/QDialogButtonBase for now,
> but do coordinate with Yves whatever you do. Yves, what are your

Most of the kDialogBase have already been replaced with
QDialog/QDialogButtonBase. About five are still remaining and I don't see any
good reason to use another porting way now.

I have now finished to fix the QGroupBox and I'm going to continue porting the
QGridLayout, which should be straightforward and, therefore, only need a
short time. After that I shall port the remaining kDialogBase.

Nevertheless, Emmanuel, if you don't find anything else to fix, don't hesitate
to jump on the kDialogBase. Sooner or later they have to be ported.

> The main idea is to have a widget to control plugin parameters
> automatically, drawing a line in an associated track, something like the
> timer rule. 'Cause I want to control not only the tempo, but things like
> an oscillator frequency, filter cut frequencies, etc

This sounds seriously cool, though I can't be much of any real help with
getting it done.

I don't know how the mechanics would be different internally, but if you could
do this on a ruler, I'll bet you could also rewire things to make it possible
to use this mechanism to manipulate our native audio controls too. We only
have a few audio controls, and just being able to manipulate volume and pan
would probably be sufficient. It's currently impossible to do anything as
simple as an automatic fade-out in a mixed composition that uses both MIDI
and audio instruments, because the audio volume controls have to be
manipulated by hand in real time. Having the ability to pan mono audio
tracks around in real time automatically would have interesting possibilities
too. Perhaps we could get to the same destination using LADSPA plugins on
these rulers, but a ruler to manipulate the native, internal audio
controllers we already have seems like the most intuitive approach from a
user perspective. Having to set up plugins for this would be kind of hacky,
but if that's the only way to get there, our philosophy around here for the
last couple of years has been to settle for hacky solutions as better than
something being utterly impossible.

If you're of a mind to tinker with the rulers, there are all kinds of other
things you could do too. They work, but they're clunky. Somebody was
supposed to be looking at some tweaks, but I don't think anything ever came
out of that. We could start on that just by having a good discussion about
why the current rulers need help, and the best plan to get there.

And somebody really should fix our oldest bug, which has been assigned to

Hi guys. I have an idea to contribute with Rosegarden. I am not sure
about how to implement it, neither if there are some parts of it
implemented at all (I couldn't find anything like it as of Rosegarden
1.6.1 - in ubuntu studio).

The main idea is to have a widget to control plugin parameters
automatically, drawing a line in an associated track, something like the
timer rule. 'Cause I want to control not only the tempo, but things like
an oscillator frequency, filter cut frequencies, etc
*
***Some things I've been thinking about implementation: create a new
Ruler Widget, maybe derived from TimerRuler, that can be embedded into a
track. This widget would be linked to any LADSPA or DSSI plugin within
this track, and, maybe trough a controller class, change the desired
parameter based on the y-value of the drawn line.
This feature is present in proprietary programs like logic and cubase,
as far as I know, and I really miss it since I moved to RG*.***

I'd be glad if someone had more insights about it. I really like this
software and may help on the Qt4 porting, but first I want to get used
to the source code and implementing this idea might be a good way.

True, though I most likely will eventually.

> OK, that's
> not true -- Vlada does at least, and he's kind of almost regular here
> -- but certainly none of the regulars here has yet demanded that we go
> all out to improve integration with it.

All-out integration, no. The only thing really quirky things about
integration of the 1.x line are all on the Help menu as far as I've ever
noticed. We've had trouble getting our help found on different systems, and
the report bug thing was never really designed for a KDE project that didn't
intend to move under the KDE umbrella eventually, and didn't work very well
for us. A lot of that stuff, like the KAboutData, I don't really mind
dispensing with anyway, because maintaining three different copies of all
that stuff was a big pain in the ass anyway.

(Which reminds me that I need to gut the AUTHORS file, which is totally out of
date, and come up with a new way to approach all of that unmaintainable mess.
Probably through the wiki. Must do before the big 200. I'm starting the
release note (very prematurely, admittedly) for 2.0.0, and spelling it out
2.0.0 every time to try to avoid confusion with X11 Rosegarden's versioning.
I'm starting to like the idea of just calling it version 200 with no dots, to
make damn sure there is never any confusion. 200, 210, 213, whatever, it
isn't really any more radical than Ubuntu's bizarrely unconventional
numbering scheme, and it strikes me as one very solid way to avoid the whole
issue we used to approach by appending that stupid -4 to our name. Just a
random thought at this point though. Opinions?)

Arguing for KDE vs. Qt though, I'd be surprised if you hadn't noticed what a
personal crisis this has been for me. I'm resigned to a pure Qt4 Rosegarden,
but I've never advocated it except when trying to tow the party line. This
was so big it took me months to put my game face on and suck it up, and I am
even now not 100% convinced I will be able to tolerate this brave new
Rosegarden. It's something I have to live with, because the tide toward Qt4
is so clear, and because you're pulling it that way, Chris, and everyone is
right behind you.

I know you're not a man to argue strongly about much of anything, Chris, but
the plain fact is that you're the administrator in charge of supervising
development, and I'm the administrator in charge of damn well everything else
by now, as I've kept expanding to fill the vacuum. If you had to take over
everything I do, our rate of progress would grind to a halt, and the reverse
might even be more true, because it's almost staggering when I consider the
programming jobs I've actually managed to accomplish in spite of my abysmal
ignorance and inexperience. Your opinion on development matters carries a
great deal of weight, and I'm going to vote with you most of the time by
default. I'm your adviser on these matters, and I supervise development in
kind of a middle manager way during your many long absences, but you're the
man who is ultimately responsible for getting that job done, and if you're
even just more fond of the Qt4 approach without being strongly behind it,
then it wins. Besides, you were behind this more strongly than you think if
you didn't see how the mere thought that we would do anything but port to
KDE4 turned my world completely upside down. I probably even cried.

On the other hand, it's very fair to say Guillaume was always the KDE guy, and
you've always known more about Qt. Even Guillaume wasn't going to aim at
KDE4 for that matter. There's just no way I can argue for trying to get
someone to do something they're not very well-equipped to do, and no way I
can do it myself, so I've been trying to tow the line and let it all go, and
have largely succeeded.

It's not really as much of an issue now as it was when we began, or actually
before we began, because I've seen so many things in the KDE porting guide
that just say "use QWhatever." Plus I'm still waiting for KDE to become
inhabitable, and I'm not terribly impressed yet. I know it's a hard job for
those guys, and I'm not doing a damn thing to help them, so I'm trying to
just stay out of it and be quiet and hope for the best. 4.1 is enough of an
improvement over 4.0 that I don't think my hope is totally unfounded.

It all comes down to the sum total of a lot of things that might be acceptable
alone, but taken together, it's just not time to move in yet. I have nothing
to gain by being an early adopter.

If this KDE guy is interested in a review, I could go have a look at whatever
update I downloaded a few days ago, but I really don't want to rip anybody's
guts out when I'm not doing a damn thing to contribute to a solution.

Also, a final thought tacked on here at the bottom. I've never consulted
kde-devel because they don't know how to do anything with our internals.
Rosegarden isn't a generic application, but a highly specialized and complex
one that solves a number of insanely difficult problems that require all
kinds of knowledge about all kinds of arcane subjects. I work with a lot of
black boxes, and try to put them together in new or better ways. My KDE or
Qt ignorance doesn't hold me back nearly so much as my STL ignorance. Most
of the code I'm personally responsible for is already compiling in the port
too, for that matter. In fact, I think all of it is, even if some bits of it
are trapped inside other things that are suffering from breakage that's not
within my area.
> What would you prefere to do with KDialogBase ?

Yves has been handling these, I believe by using QDialog and
QDialogButtonBox directly.

A new base class might be a good idea. On the one hand, our dialogs
are probably not consistent enough for a simple base class to be easy
to introduce. On the other hand, our dialogs are not consistent
enough, and a simple base class might help.

But improving the dialogs is probably something that's worth doing in
another pass, after the basics compile (assuming that it is easier to
continue doing them in an ad-hoc way now that we're part-way through).
In particular, we need to review closely our use of apply/cancel vs
OK -- our usage is a mess, and is plain wrong in at least two of our
existing dialogs. I have a couple of lines of notes on that from an
earlier thread, which I should put on the wiki. Fixing these things
is certainly easier once we can actually see them though.

So I'd say we should continue with QDialog/QDialogButtonBase for now,
but do coordinate with Yves whatever you do. Yves, what are your
thoughts?
