My wife has an old Graflex with the 4x5 back. Worked in the 70's. Don't
know if it still functions at this point. Great to focus with the ground
glass screen. Real large format camera.

In the 70's and 80's, my workhorse portrait camera was a KoniOmega M, 120
film, 2-1/4" x 3" negatives. 10 shots to a roll. 30 rolls to an affair.
Standard of the wedding & bar mitzvah shooters, unless you could afford a
'blad. Still have it but haven't used it in decades. Digital is so much
easier, cheaper and the cameras are finally good enough to use.

2-1/4 square format, yeah we did that ...
> Mike,
>
> Digital? I learned to take pictures on a "Speed Graphix". And did you
> know
> that Stan has a 2 1/4 square Rolliflex? I had to get him a roll of film
> to
> prove it still could be had. Now there was a camera and a format.

You don't need three hands and you don't need to speak in code. This is a
pretty literate list and I'm betting 80% knows who Horatio Hornblower is and
probably knows who wrote the story. I've lived a full life, traveled more
than I ever wanted, and have been first witness to more failure than I'd
wish on anyone. That said, there have been one or two successes along the
way. The Grateful Dead said it best, "what a long strange trip it's been".
I've dropped off the list a couple of times because (1) I no longer own a
Rhodes 22, and (2) I felt I was hurting Stan and Rose's efforts to build and
sell a wonderful boat. Twice I've been invited back because, "the list was
dead". When the people who keep inviting me back contact me back-channel
and tell me to "cool it", I will respect their wishes.

Whatever beating you or anyone else attempts on me in cyberspace will be
defended, or ignored, and life will go on.

We Haslett's have a family tradition, learned from my father, that we're too
busy messing up own lives to worry about whatever someone else is saying
about us.

Unbelievable .....

Excuse me??? The fact that folks on this list happen to own an R22 and
participate here from time to time in no way obligates them to provide
you a repository of knowledge on a 37 year old boat.

Far as R. Philaga is concerned: You weren't here and know nothing about
the subject . You might be better served to stick to subjects you know
something about.

This is a mail list formed by many of the people who own or have owned a
Rhodes 22. There is no connection or obligation to General boats. We
help people out with boat questions if we can, because we happen to
think Stan, Rose and Elton are some pretty darn good people, not because
we have any obligation other than friendship to anybody. We chit chat
amongst ourselves the rest of the time. I doubt even you can find a law
against that. Anyone is welcome to join in ... or not. What you are not
welcome to do is bitch about it.
>
> 1 - I'm a mediocre sailor at best.
>
> 2 - I can't cook.
>
> 3 - Well, there are some secrets that need to remain secret.
>
> Other than that, you're pretty much right.
>
> With love,
> Brad
>
> Hi Brad,
>
> Perhaps you were misnamed at birth. I would suggest the name Horaito from
> the writings of C.S. Foster. By your many exploits and triumphs it certainly
> seems to fit the bill. I withhold the second part of the name because I do
> like you and have no wish to inflame the conversation at this point.
>
> Now for Rummy,
>
> The last time I pointed out your hypocrisy about the Charter you replied
> not to let the door hit me in the ass on my way out. In spite of the much
> vaunted "knowledge" contained on this list there is a person in Colorado who
> has no picts of a standard boom or poptop car for her vintage boat. Where
> would Slim look to find correct lengths or diameters for replacing his
> standing rigging? Not here! I've done multiple searches for many topics for
> my 71 rhodes and draw nothing but blanks. But not to worry in the future I
> will make my own modest attempts to correct this. In the meantime to all
> older Rhodes owners I recommend the http/www.rhodes22.org/ site for a source
> of info on the actual boat we sail. Unfortunately the main contributer one
> R. Philaja apparently was hounded of the list by such as yourself. One
> final thought, I urge you to consider the words of one Vince Lombardi former
> coach of the Green Bay Packers. "Any time you think you are indispensable to
> a group or organization go put your foot in a bucket of water. The hole you
> leave behind when you withdraw your foot is as long as you'll be missed."
>
> Watch out for that door fellah it swings both ways
> John Shulick
I had a '76 Rhodes for many years and it had
about a 8 foot piece of wire which was attacher to each of the stearn chain
plates. There was a block that could travel along the length of the wire
and since there was slack the whole arrangment was above the tiller. The
block was then attached to a "fiddle W/becket and adj. cam" (see the piece
of hardware on page 1196 of the current West marine cataloge modle 876 in
foto and model # 7599921. There was an additional single block at the end
of the boom to complete the mainsheet controlls. Unfortunatly, I don't have
any pictures as my current Rhodes has a bar for a travler rather than the
old wire system. Hope this helps
> Thanks for your help.? Just want all of you to not worry, I am well over
21 (wish I wasn't).? I am one of the adult leaders for the Ship.? I still
haven't seen anything yet that makes sense to me on how the traveler that
comes of the boom attaches to the boat.? There are two shrouds(?) coming off
the aft part of the boom but if attached to the stern?they interfere with
steering,?there doesn't seem to be anyplace to? attach them to that makes
sense.??
>
> Thanks again to all who have responded.? I do feel we will be able to
figure all this out with your help!
>
> First look at:
> Email Carol at: CarolN8@... She is running a business so may not
> immediately respond.
>
> Also reread Rob Lowe's post:
>
> http://www.rhodes22.org/pipermail/rhodes22-list/2008-July/052339.html
>
> The Rhodes 22 has been made for 40 years. The first few were called
> Sailmasters or something like that. The hull shapes are almost the same

but
> the hardware has been evolving or changing since the original maker is
still
> making the Rhodes 22. If you contact General Boats, remember that it is a
> very small business and and no where near the image you get from their web
> site or this web site. The only people that answer the phone are Stan or
> Rose.
>
> Keep in mind that we are not General Boats, but rather a group that either
> has, has had, wants to have a Rhodes 22. If you are not over 21 tell us
so

> we can watch our language (Get that folks?)
>
> Keep asking questions, keeping in mind that it may take time (days, weeks)
> for a good answer.

> Esther,
> Hope you can follow all of this. I'm assuming you have a standard main
> and a set up somewhat similar to mine. I have a 1976 so we should be
> similar. Look at the photos and see if this helps.
>
> In the photo with the name that includes the name "traveler upper", you
> see the two rear stays and how the rear stay adjuster is rigged. I've
> since learned that you tighten the rear stays by pulling on the line
> which should run alongside the starboard rear stay to a cleat that's
> located on the starboard stern, right near the swim ladder. Please
> ignore the bungi cords in the photo, they have been replaced by a
> topping lift (a line that runs from the top of the mast that holds the
> rear of the boom up).
>
> The photo that includes the name "traveler middle" shows how the rear of
> the boom attaches to the rear "traveler". The newer boats have an
> actual traveler bar, mine has a traveler wire(?), which is just a metal
> cable that runs between the two rear chain plates. Again, ignore the
> bungi coards.
>
> The "traveler lower" shows again the boom to "traveler" attachment. The
> back stay adjuster (the line twisted about the stay) again, should go to
> the cleat on the stern of the boat.
>
> Finally, the photo "riggingtraveler" (which is not my boat but I have
> this photo from somewhere), shows the topping lift attached to the rear
> of the boom, the aft cam and block assembly and how it is rigged. Note
> the traveler bar in this photo, which my boat does not have.
>
> Hope this helps. - rob
> Thanks so much for the reply, but there was no picture.? Also, the
> concern is how the aft portion of the boom attaches to the boat.
> Esther,
>
> Both the boom and the pop top attach to sliders that are in the grove on
> the
> mast. Here is a picture of the two sliders (or cars as some call them)
> on
> the mast. The bottom one shows the bracket to attach to the front of
> the
> pop top. The top one is a bit cutoff in the picture or you would see
> the
> attachment for the boom.
>
> If you do not have these cars, contact Stan Spitzer at stan@...
> That picture of the yawl is great.
> does. Races do
> Elle,
> The only photo that really says "race" to me is
> the one getting ready to
> round the mark...that said, I like 0002 as well...did you
> try cropping till
> the large boat fills the right side of the photo while
> keeping as many of
> the other boats in the background as you could?...there is
> something about
> that one that keeps me going back to it...
> the
> > left that nicely
> > > frames the photo. But I think the second pic
> might
> > be best if you are
> > > able to zoom in to get rid of all else and
> accentuate
> > the reflection in
> > > looks cool.
>
>
I do feel we will be able to
figure all this out with your help!
> immediately respond.
>
> Also reread Rob Lowe's post:

>

>

Thanks for the compliment! You would be 100% correct but for three faults.

That picture of the yawl is great.
http://www.rhodes22.org/pipermail/rhodes22-list/attachments/20080723/1ae15d99/attachment.jpg
I prefer a Ketch over a Yawl, and a schooner over either. The issue I have with all of them is draft. 'Shipjacks' solve that issue. Do they have any down your end of the bay? Now there would be a picture.

Mike,

Digital? I learned to take pictures on a "Speed Graphix". And did you know that Stan has a 2 1/4 square Rolliflex? I had to get him a roll of film to prove it still could be had. Now there was a camera and a format.
> Elle,
>
> > Thanks for the critiques....one thing you do need to
> know is that all
> > these pix were taken > three days after I broke my
> camera & one day after
> > I'd purchased this one (last
> > October).....& I left for Italy three days after
> this race.....I'm lucky I
> > could locate the
> > viewfinder !
>
> You are more than welcome. You have a great eye for
> composition.
>
> I knew something wasn't quite correct since the EXIF
> shows the photo taken
> at 01/09/06 19:57 - a lot of sunshine for that hour at that
> date. Where did
> you say they were taken? Hopefully, you have learned to
> set the date and
> time since then. BTW, the D80 is an excellent camera for
> just about any
> kind of shooting. 10MP gives you plenty of resolution for
> large formats and
> the quick shot modes should help you get really good point
> and shoots.
> Biggest complaint has been focus time and accuracy for the
> D80.
>
> > Question...if I'd slowed down the exposure, that
> would have caused a
> > longer shutter
> > speed...true? May not have been an option on the
> moving power boat...?
>
> It all depends on how fast you are moving with regard to
> the subject. At
> reasonable speeds, 1/250s should not have caused
> significant blur and
> permitted the lens to be stopped down quite a bit to retain
> the DOF. With
> digital, try it and see. With film, we tried it several
> ways to "bracket"
> the exposure, since there was no immediate visual feedback.
> The problem is
> that now that I shoot digital, I have a hard time seeing
> the image on the
> small displays, even with glasses. I just can't win
> ...
>
> > I hope to get some really good shots this year....
>
> The great thing about digital is the film is free. Keep
> clicking and you
> will. The biggest problem is finding that one shot that
> you know you took
> but is lost somewhere in those 2 TB (and growing
> exponentially) of photos on
> the hard drive!!
> > Hey, Mike,
> >
> > This race is held over Columbus Day weekend...it is a
> Hospice Regatta run
> > out of the marina where I work....One of the largest
> Regattas on the Bay:
> > The Turkey Shoot.
> >
> > Attached is the fleet from '06, from the first day
> of racing...the first
> > day of racing was cancelled as that was the weekend of
> either Ernesto or
> > the unnamed nor'easter.....can't remember
> which ..So we called the
> > replacement race the Origami Cup. Made a trophy &
> awarded it, too. ;^)
> > Racing resumed the next day....
> >
> > It used to be held over Thanksgivng weekend, hence its
> name, the Turkey
> > Shoot, then was moved to the weekend it now occupies;
> then the sailboat
> > show was moved to the same weekend.
> >
> > Only rule for boats is that the boat or its design
> must be 25 years old or
> > older. C'mom. Rhodies...come play!

Elle,

I lost the original email about your circular polarizer questions so I have recreated it from the archives as follows:

> I rarely took the circular polarizer off my film camera, and I've used it on & off w/the digital & the 18-200 ( 27-300 digital) lens, but I am dissatisfied with the results....I believe it confuses the sensor...and even playing w/white balance doesn't get as nice a shot as just letting the camera work alone & then maybe tweaking just a bit on PhotoShop.

Circular polarizers should not confuse the white balance since they affect contrast (in theory.) The biggest drawback to using a polarizer is the loss of two f-stops. The camera will compensate automatically since you have TTL metering. This may explain why you have had to open up the lens so much. Unless you are taking pictures with a lot of unwanted reflection (careful with water, sometimes the reflection is desired, especially when it reduces the contrast of the background), you should not automatically use the polarizer. Also, be sure to adjust it's setting for the desired effect (min/max compensation, usually adjusted through rotation of the elements.) You can also change your position with respect to the light source to change the effect or minimize unwanted reflection without the polarizer.

There ain't no such thing as a perfect camera, lens or polarizer. That is why a good photographer can take beautiful pictures with a snapshot camera and a poor photographer can't seem to take a "keeper" with a fancy Nikon. Fortunately, you appear to be capable of using the snapshot, just think what you can do with your D80!! Experiment and never stop trying new stuff.

> FINALLY -- COMMON SENSE PREVAILS
> In a remarkable display of bipartisan support for recreational boating,
> both the United States House and Senate passed S. 2766 on Tuesday, "The
> Clean Boating Act of 2008", which will permanently restore a
> long-standing exemption for recreational boats from permitting
> requirements under the Clean Water Act. The legislation now goes to the
> White House for the President's signature.
>
> Congressional action was spawned by a U.S. District Court decision in
> September 2006 under which an estimated 17 million recreational boats
> would have fallen under Clean Water Act permit requirements effective
> September 30, 2008. The permit would have dictated maintenance and
> operation procedures and potentially subjected boaters to citizen
> lawsuits as well as a penalty system designed for industrial polluters.
>
> "This is a fabulous victory for common sense and it just goes to show
> what can be done when the boating public, the marine industry and its
> representatives in Congress row together in a bipartisan way," said
> BoatU.S. President Nancy Michelman.
>
>
> We can't change the angle of the wind....but we can adjust our sails.
