Old cameras

Ed,

My wife has an old Graflex with the 4x5 back. Worked in the 70's. Don't
know if it still functions at this point. Great to focus with the ground
glass screen. Real large format camera.

In the 70's and 80's, my workhorse portrait camera was a KoniOmega M, 120
film, 2-1/4" x 3" negatives. 10 shots to a roll. 30 rolls to an affair.
Standard of the wedding & bar mitzvah shooters, unless you could afford a
'blad. Still have it but haven't used it in decades. Digital is so much
easier, cheaper and the cameras are finally good enough to use.

2-1/4 square format, yeah we did that ...

You don't need three hands and you don't need to speak in code. This is a
pretty literate list and I'm betting 80% knows who Horatio Hornblower is and
probably knows who wrote the story. I've lived a full life, traveled more
than I ever wanted, and have been first witness to more failure than I'd
wish on anyone. That said, there have been one or two successes along the
way. The Grateful Dead said it best, "what a long strange trip it's been".
I've dropped off the list a couple of times because (1) I no longer own a
Rhodes 22, and (2) I felt I was hurting Stan and Rose's efforts to build and
sell a wonderful boat. Twice I've been invited back because, "the list was
dead". When the people who keep inviting me back contact me back-channel
and tell me to "cool it", I will respect their wishes.

Whatever beating you or anyone else attempts on me in cyberspace will be
defended, or ignored, and life will go on.

We Haslett's have a family tradition, learned from my father, that we're too
busy messing up own lives to worry about whatever someone else is saying
about us.

Unbelievable .....

Excuse me??? The fact that folks on this list happen to own an R22 and
participate here from time to time in no way obligates them to provide
you a repository of knowledge on a 37 year old boat.

Far as R. Philaga is concerned: You weren't here and know nothing about
the subject . You might be better served to stick to subjects you know
something about.

This is a mail list formed by many of the people who own or have owned a
Rhodes 22. There is no connection or obligation to General boats. We
help people out with boat questions if we can, because we happen to
think Stan, Rose and Elton are some pretty darn good people, not because
we have any obligation other than friendship to anybody. We chit chat
amongst ourselves the rest of the time. I doubt even you can find a law
against that. Anyone is welcome to join in ... or not. What you are not
welcome to do is bitch about it.

The last time I pointed out your hypocrisy about the Charter you replied not to let the door hit me in the ass on my way out. In spite of the much vaunted "knowledge" contained on this list there is a person in Colorado who has no picts of a standard boom or poptop car for her vintage boat. Where would Slim look to find correct lengths or diameters for replacing his standing rigging? Not here! I've done multiple searches for many topics for my 71 rhodes and draw nothing but blanks. But not to worry in the future I will make my own modest attempts to correct this. In the meantime to all older Rhodes owners I recommend the http/www.rhodes22.org/ site for a source of info on the actual boat we sail. Unfortunately the main contributer one R. I had a '76 Rhodes for many years and it had
about a 8 foot piece of wire which was attacher to each of the stearn chain
plates. There was a block that could travel along the length of the wire
and since there was slack the whole arrangment was above the tiller. The
block was then attached to a "fiddle W/becket and adj. cam" (see the piece
of hardware on page 1196 of the current West marine cataloge modle 876 in
foto and model # 7599921. There was an additional single block at the end
of the boom to complete the mainsheet controlls. Unfortunatly, I don't have
any pictures as my current Rhodes has a bar for a travler rather than the
old wire system. Hope this helps

Dear Esther,
Looks like Bob came to the rescue with the pictures. Also my
description was wrong on my first post as it was a double block not single
attached to the end of the boom. Try finding the parts on E-bay or even
craigs list thehat can save the troop some money perhaps. Good luck.

Dear over 21 Esther,
I had a '76 Rhodes for many years and it had
about a 8 foot piece of wire which was attacher to each of the stearn chain
plates. There was a block that could travel along the length of the wire
and since there was slack the whole arrangment was above the tiller. The
block was then attached to a "fiddle W/becket and adj. cam" (see the piece
of hardware on page 1196 of the current West marine cataloge modle 876 in
foto and model # 7599921. There was an additional single block at the end
of the boom to complete the mainsheet controlls. Unfortunatly, I don't have
any pictures as my current Rhodes has a bar for a travler rather than the
old wire system. Hope this helps

I prefer a Ketch over a Yawl, and a schooner over either. The issue I have with all of them is draft. 'Shipjacks' solve that issue. Do they have any down your end of the bay? Now there would be a picture.

Circular polarizer

Elle,

I lost the original email about your circular polarizer questions so I have recreated it from the archives as follows:

Circular polarizers should not confuse the white balance since they affect contrast (in theory.) The biggest drawback to using a polarizer is the loss of two f-stops. The camera will compensate automatically since you have TTL metering. This may explain why you have had to open up the lens so much. Unless you are taking pictures with a lot of unwanted reflection (careful with water, sometimes the reflection is desired, especially when it reduces the contrast of the background), you should not automatically use the polarizer. Also, be sure to adjust it's setting for the desired effect (min/max compensation, usually adjusted through rotation of the elements.) You can also change your position with respect to the light source to change the effect or minimize unwanted reflection without the polarizer.

There ain't no such thing as a perfect camera, lens or polarizer. That is why a good photographer can take beautiful pictures with a snapshot camera and a poor photographer can't seem to take a "keeper" with a fancy Nikon. Fortunately, you appear to be capable of using the snapshot, just think what you can do with your D80!! Experiment and never stop trying new stuff.

Hopefully, King George will ink it promptly. Did you notice how the EPA
hadn't even prepared the documents and forms that would have been required
by September? They had no intention of making recreational boaters buy
permits. I am trying to figure out who benefitted from all of this nonsense
... somebody must have had a reason for all this.
