RevCon kudosI hope the readers here don't mind my taking a little slice of bandwidth
to thank those involved in making this year's RevCon a great one: Jo did a remarkable job in managing the conference, truly Cloe-quality (Cloe Mifsud worked with Sims on the two Euro RevCons, and IMNSHO is the index of smooth event management). That Jo was able to be so efficient with everything and still maintain a charming and relaxed demeanor was remarkable and helpful. Lynn's choice of the venue was originally a concern for me, not being a fan of Vegas. But the Alexis resort is as he promised not at all like the rest of the town: clean, spacious, quiet, without a slot machine in sight and with three (count 'em three!) pools. All for very affordable rates. Good job, Lynn. Meeting Bill Marriot in person was a special treat, and his assistance with getting the word out about the conference helped bring it the strongest attendance yet. I also very much enjoyed meeting Ben and John from RunRev, both talented and bright young men whose contributions to the company are as impressive as they are enjoyable to talk with. Judging from the buzz around the conference, kudos are also due to all the presenters, esp. Jerry who managed to handle four sessions. Folks seemed to get a lot from the sessions, and that's ultimately what it's all about. Kevin and Mark did the best job ever in delivering the NDA presentation in which they outlined future directions for the technology. Of course I can't share specifics here, but I can say that it was the most relevant and confidence-building NDA session yet. A debt of gratitude is also due to Chipp Walters and Dan Shafer, who did such a good job for so many years establishing the tradition of the west coast event. I doubt this RevCon could have been as good as it was without you two having set the tone and raised the bar each year as you did. And of course the biggest thanks goes to all the attendees who took time out of their busy schedules to come. We had an unusually high number of folks from Europe this time, and I hope the long travel was as worthwhile for you folks as it was great to have you there. On a personal note, it was the other attendees who really made this conference special for me. I had some very enriching conversations with Bjoernke von Gierke, Robert Cailliau, Tereza Snyder, Sandy Beadle, Dave Simpson, and many others, and perhaps most of all Jim Hurley, who showed me how rainbows work. These conversations were the sort of thing that just can't happen over email, and reminded me why conferences like this are so much fun. And for those who went on the campout Sunday night, many thanks for making that a special way to cap the weekend. It was a great treat to discover the king snake, and to introduce Tariel to his first kangaroo rat. Special thanks to Max Shafer for managing the gear rental from REI. And my oh my what a feast Ken and Phil whipped up! I'm definitely up for doing that again next year. Andre and I have already started making plans. And Jim Ault, thanks for being such a valuable one-man welcome wagon for Las Vegas, with your many helpful tips for getting around town. It was great to share a walk with you, Phil, and Andre Monday morning at the Red Spring petroglyph site. -- Richard Gaskin Fourth World Media Corporation ___________________________________________________________ Ambassador@... http://www.FourthWorld.com _______________________________________________ use-revolution mailing list use-revolution@... Yes, only 10 miles from the strip is the wilderness of the Red Rock Canyon State Park. The best part for me is that RevConLive was 8 miles from my house, so I could socialize in the evenings and on Sunday afternoon. My work schedule would not permit attending classes, but doing the poolside until midnight was a great night. I am also happy that Richard's quest to find petroglyphs (ancient American Indian paintings in the desert) was successful. Rather amazing given that all he used was a general description in a book. It was quite a climb around the cliffside for Andre Garzia, Phil Davis, Richard, and me. So many names now have faces and voices (and smiles) for me. I appreciate the kindness and camaraderie that everyone showed. Word. I really hated to miss the desert trip, but I had a flight out on Sunday evening. I too missed the hike, and the kangaroo rat, and what? a king snake! but I had the comfort of Phil's Glenlivet. I sure won't forget Rev by moonlight! Re: RevCon kudosHello Friends,
I second everything said here with special appreciation and kudos for the RunRev Team and Jo Organizer-Extraordinaire which made this a wonderful conference and Richard Gaskin for having the wonderful idea for an outdoor trip. This conference was great and very important to me. To all that watched my sessions, I hope you guys liked. I am building more documentation for the cgi features of Revolution which will be helpful. all things considered, I just loved the trip! Re: RevCon kudosHappy for you all to see the kudos flying around. Out of curiosity,
how did the "learn programming in a day" attendees get on? _______________________________________________ use-revolution mailing list use-revolution@... Re: RevCon kudosI attended the "learn programming in a day" section, and I was very impressed.
Some of the information was a bit basic for myself, but I was able to learn some very interesting functionality in Revolution (like the ease of drag and drop), and saw some great implementations that I might not have thought of on my own. I really enjoyed the project format, how it was a basic project that was refined as the day continued. - Noel At 01:55 PM 5/16/2008, you wrote: >Happy for you all to see the kudos flying around. They all learned programming in a day, of course! ;-) Seriously, the workshop was a challenge because we had a wide range of ability and experience levels in the class (and there were about 45 people!) But we tried hard to address everyone's needs by offering lots of basic stuff and some more advanced concepts, all backed up with lots of one-on-one attention. Judging by the favorable comments we heard, the workshop was a success. If any participants are on the list we'd love to hear your comments--on or off list. And I am sure RunRev will be sending out followup surveys to get your feedback. Re: RevCon kudosColin Holgate wrote:
> Happy for you all to see the kudos flying around. Out of curiosity, how > did the "learn programming in a day" attendees get on? Well, as Devin said, it was really tough. Skill levels were all over the map and we even had some people attending who probably should have been up on the podium with us instead of in the audience. We sent those folks with specific, more advanced questions out to the code kitchen for a while when we were teaching the very basic stuff. They could get advanced tutoring there. I had three or four newcomers -- who had only launched Rev for the first time that morning -- come up to me with glowing praise for the sessions. All of them were hooked and convinced that Rev would meet their needs. A couple of them had previous programming experience in other languages and were absolutely stunned at the simplicity of Rev. One said, "With variables, you just put something into something else -- how elegant!" They were there for various reasons, but they all seemed quite satisfied. One man said that he was lost at first but as the day went on he had a "eureka!" moment and it all started to fall into place. There was no way we could cover everything, and in fact, we all had more material prepared than we had time to present. But I think we gave enough of an outline that people felt comfortable continuing on their own. We gave them a CD full of supplemental material to look at. And I finally got to meet Marian in person, and I apologize again for slapping her bad leg in a fit of enthusiasm. She's very gracious. :) -- Jacqueline Landman Gay | jacque@... Working. Sweat and labor even during all the toilet talk. I don't mean potty mouth, I mean toilet talk. Port-a-potties, holes in the ground, straddle-a-grate-on-the-sidewalk, lose your wallet in the benjo, whirlpool flush toilets, high-powered Vegas whoosh toilets that only use a cup of water, not to mention the little guy in Italy standing outside the rest rooms selling 3 sheets of TP for 2 dollars. Programmers can talk about anything, we're versatile. But it was all very hard work. -- Jacqueline Landman Gay | jacque@...
