Replacing an Eberspacher heater

My Eberspacher hydronic 10 heater has yet again given up, the third time in
five years and 2,700 hours.    The quote for the repair is this time between
£700 and £1,000.    It is therefore probably beyond economic repair.

I am looking at replacing it with either a Mikuni or a Webasto which both
look as though they will fit in the space.    Has anyone done such a
replacement and can give me any advice on the difficulties I might have such
as layout of pipe runs and mountings.  Also advice on the relative
reliability of these heaters would be welcome.

One of the problems with the Eberspacher is that when it gives up it just
does not start and there appears to be no way to diagnose the fault, other
than taking it out a retuning it to a dealer.     Are the Mikuni or the
Webasto any better in this respect?

Advice on good local dealers would also be welcome, as I would like to view
the relevant heaters before making up my mind.

If you wish to reply off list please use john@....    Thanks in
advance for any help.

Hi,

My favourite topic!

1. Run the Eberspacher on Kerosene.

2. Get the 7 day timer which gives the fault codes off Ebay.

3. Go on the Espar web-site in USA and download the fault code analysis
manual.

4. Get a second used Hydronic 10 cheap from another disallusioned boater and
use it for spares.

Regards,

Steve.

My experience has been good with Mikunis (MX40 and MX60). The MX40 has been
running on red diesel in a narrow boat for several years and has required
reasonably frequent DIY servicing and fault diagnosis. Preventive
maintenance is the key if running on red. The MX40 gives out flashing fault
codes (from memory from 1 to 9 flashes but don't quote me on this). I have
found that I have built up a reasonable expertise and confidence but at
least I do not have to get any special equipment. The MX60 running on white
diesel on my French boat has been totally fault free (so far).
>From the horror stories that I have read I would always choose a Mikuni over
its rivals but I may be biased of course ;-)))

Take the bull by the horns and fit something sensible that works. We
have a Hurricane supplied by Calcut Boats and are very pleased with it.
It doesnt take up much space and is reliable. It is a bit pricey but
you get what you pay for

There are good reports from 2 hurricane owners here on the Nene. However,
neither heaters have been used very much so it would be too early, in my
opinion, to say what the hurricane will be like long term. Although I
believe it has been used in Canada for some time.

I replaced a Mikuni with a Webasto on our narrow boat, slight rearrangement
of the water pipes, otherwise no problem.  The Webasto has been in service
on Draco, which we used as residential for 4 years until early this year and
the heater ran for app 5 hours minimum a day in two sessions, and the
Webasto is still going strong

The Webasto we have has a flashing light on the control which tells you  what
the fault is-
Much better than the Eberspacher which have to be returned to agent for
repair. I was quoted £65.00 hr
in the Uk to look at our old Eberspacer before repairs - so bought a new
Webasto in Holland 1440 Euros for a 5 kw hot air one last July.
The kit that comes with the Webasto makes fitting easy - but follow the
instructions carefully.

I have posted the mobile of  guy who repairs Webasto and Eberspacher. the
fuel must be as clean as possible. When mine "went" a short time after I had
just had it repaired i fixed it myself. They normally coke up. You can strip
it down yourself and clean/replace the burner. just take your time and take
plenty of photos so you know how to put it together again. There is a firm
called Butler Technik (on the net) who will supply all the parts you need.
you can also download the complete repair manual (for Webasto) off the net.
Mine (webasto) is still ok 18 months later. Put an in-line fuel filter in.

Just stripped my Hydronic 10 down for the third time this year and have started running it on kerosene
runs perfectly no sooting up and starts first time every time ..I have all the manuals/fault codes. if you would like a copy mail me...

if you do decide to buy a new heater would you consider selling/donating your old one to us for spares
( I run the floating classroom at Little Venice ...we're a charity and Eberspacher spares are just too pricey)

I think the main problem with all heaters of this type is fuel .....I recommend kerosene...
