If you mean that big oil and big auto will try to patent technologies to prevent someone from mass producing EV's in a factory, I suppose it's possilbe but as far as home conversions, I'm not really afraid of that.

No one can stop you from taking an electric pump motor and mounting it to your car. No one can stop you from dismantling a wrecked hybrid and putting the batteries in a conversion built by you, for your personal use. No one can stop you from installing golf-cart batteries in your conversion and no one can stop you from installing a golf cart or forklift motor controller in your conversion, nor can anyone stop you from designing and building your own controller. Even if laws are written to prevent such behavior, they would be un-enforceable. Law enforcement has bigger problems than to pull over every driver asking to peek under their hood checking for EV components. If someone started violating patents by cranking out conversions in a shop and selling them to the public, law enforcement might do something about that.

The nice thing about the "grass roots" level that we are operating at, is that we can't be stopped. We'll keep doing it, we'll keep being interviewed by the media. The mainstream public will continue to get angrier, and angrier that a product that they want isn't available and finally a company will find a way to build it without violating a patent that another company is squatting on. It's kind of like the operating system, Linux. It's open source. It's free. People can download it, tweak the hell out of it, and then give it away and no company can stop it.

So big companies halt the mass production of EV's because they are squatting on key patents. So what? What do you think they'll do when only a tiny, wealthy, handful can afford their ICE powered products? Go bankrupt or build the car that we can all afford to operate.

I bought my last brand-new car from an automotive manufacturer in '06 and I'll never buy another one until they build the one I want. I'll keep converting ICE cars, and buying used ICE powered cars for longer distance driving until they do. Imagine if most people did that?

I am reminded of how the NIMH batteries were pantented out of production for pure electric cars... How they don't produce NIMH batteries of a size that will allow use in electric cars! Next will be wheel motors and and advanced controllers. They seem to usually put the projected date of availablity to be after the hydrogen fuel cell production estimates... or at least several years from now... and they put the price up in competition with fuel cell... $1million per vehicle or some such nonsence?
