Well then, let's just resuscitate the forum.  What are the plans of the list
members vis-a-vis the D700?  I don't see one in my future for quite sometime
since the D200 is doing an excellent job.  I sometimes wonder how much Nikon
is able to turn normally astute and intelligent photographers into
slobbering me-toos with advertising that sells the sizzle instead of the
meat.  I can see having to upgrade every time something better comes out if
one makes their living off of the camera but I wonder about those who never
utilize top quality labs to do monster enlargements and keep all their shots
on a hard disk.  Why do they need a D3 or D700?

Hi Mel,

I am still using film, since I mainly take b&w pictures (98% of my
"work"), and therefore I am very happy with my two F100 and one FM3a.
At the same time though, the D700 would just be the right camera for me
if I wanted to go digital and the one I "was waiting" for: a semi-pro
full frame !!!

I think both cameras are necessary in Nikon's range, because they are
full frame, a lot of people want full-frame digital cameras and
therefore Nikon had to fill the gap with the competition.
At the same time, the cameras are aimed to two different types of
photographers (D3 = pro and D700 = semi-pro or backup for pro).
Of course, people like yourself, who have invested a lot of money in a
digital camera not a long time ago, do not see the necessity to change
their camera now, like someone who had a Nikon F801 did not see the need
to move to a Nikon F90x in the past.
Moreover, I know quite a few people who were just waiting for something
like the D700 to switch to digital, only because, like myself, would
like to keep all their lenses, full-frame, without having to make
strange calculations to verify what focal lens they are really using,
but did not want to "mortgage" their houses to buy a D3, that is also
"too much" for their needs.

I agree that for film users, the D700 would be the logical step.  Most of my
shooting is wildlife and the DX series is a godsend for me.  My 300mm 2.8
suddenly has a coverage of a 450 2.8 and with converters, it gets me where I
want to be.  I found that my recent trips to Prague did indeed cause me some
stress with the DX format and I had to use a 12-24 for some shots which
would have been just great with the old 24mm on my F5.

Mel and Ivan:

I use a D300.  It is less than a year old.
If I had known about the D700, I would have waited for it.
I shoot mostly nature.  Most of this is landscapes where the D700 would excel.  However, for animals the D300 is better.
If I were a professional photographer able to justify a D3x offering both full frame and cropped images, this camera would be better
than both a D300 and a D700.
