Are you talking about for the X11 image?
The screen goes to a window manager.. there is no login on the gumstix
either. I just see some folders that have nothing in them. If I go to the
bottom corner and try to open a shell.. it "opens" one, I get an icon on the
bottom task bar, but there is no shell to be found or typed into.

You can plug in a cheap USB keyboard to get keyboard access to the LCD
windows session.
