Actually, what you suggest creates the following:

o list 1
o <cursor here>
o list 2
o list 3
o list 4

I then have to hit the delete key twice to remove the extra bullet item
(that's what I meant in my message about "combining two separate
bulleted lists"). That's not too bad, but it would be nice if there was
a still more direct way -- for example, placing the cursor either right
before or right after the first bullet symbol and hitting return (or
shift-return, control-return, etc.).
