It may have less to do with his readers than with his employer.  They
may have requested, perhaps at the behest of the investors or
advertisers, that he soften his stance and/or cozy up to Microsoft.  The
readers would only matter to the extent that it affects circulation; is
he a prime draw or detriment to the paper?  They make their money from
the ads, and someone who simply stops reading his column while still
reading the rest of the paper has zero effective impact on ad income.
