The specs are a bit optimistic, IMO. Seventy-five miles range? I don't
think so. These are pretty decently designed EVs, though. The battery
tunnel makes for a well balanced car. It was made by Unique Mobility, but
it does NOT use the brushless motor they now manufacture. It's a GE
separately excited motor.
Spare parts are no doubt an issue partly because it's a custom design. From
what I understand UM did use many parts from other cars but we're talking
about cars that were already a few years old when the Electrek was designed
over 30 years ago.
The controller is a custom design, VERY complex. I've seen one. It looked
like about $10-20k worth right there. The buyer could end up in the same
boat as the folks who have the Soleq Escort conversions.
I would love to have one partly because it's a bit of EV history, but
there's no way I'd pay even this seller's starting bid. IMO, other than the
slick battery tray, it has little to offer over a good conversion (it's just
as heavy). In terms of a practical EV, I'd much rather wait for Lee's
Sunrise.
