You control what program opens which file type not by GIMP, but
(assuming you are using Windows) by Windows.
Open 'My Computer', then 'Tools', 'Folder Options', 'File Types'. You
will see a long list of file types. I use the simple program "Windows
picture and Fax Viewer", which gives a fast preview of your jpeg (or
whatever other visuals you want to see quickly).
You can add to the 'send-to' menu in Windows explorer (under your user
name in the "Documents and Settings" folder) to add functionality to
right-clicking on various files. If I decide a particular file needs
GIMPing, I just right-click and 'send to' the workhorse.
