Thank you all for your suggestions/comments about using SKOS properties. I think what I will plan on doing is for the time being create my own properties that will be replacements for skos:definition, skos:preLabel, skos:altLabel and others (or something similar to what Alan suggested) because I don't want to run into problems with the ontology being OWL Full rather than OWL DL. I do advocate using the standards whenever possible though so I will keep a close eye on W3C's progress of SKOS and will post here if an update solves the dilemmas many have expressed. I'm also looking forward to trying out a beta version of Protégé 4 that might have some ways to add SKOS properties.
