In the event that you are designing and programming a new AIML
interpretation engine completely from scratch then I think - emphasis on
this word - you will be free to do with the code of your engine as you
please. I.e. distribute it under any licence you wish.

That said, I am no Intellectual Property lawyer and I can give you no
guarantees on this. The concept of AIML is protected under the GPL, which
you would be able to recognize in a Help file and by supplying a copy of the
GNU Public Licence. If you plan on making a living out of distributing this
engine to other parties then you may want to consult an IP lawyer for this.
The investment you make here will be worth it.

Now, the topic of GPL has come across a couple of times and when you look in
the archives you will find a large number of posts. Keep in mind that these
posts will refer to version 2 of this licence.

Kind regards,

Anne.

But what if someone were to implement AIML from scratch from the AIML
spec.  Are there any IP issues then?  That is, does AIML  itself have
any IP protection or only its implementation?
