Hi there! Short answer: by accident.

Some more background: 3.9 is a pre-4.0 release (name
may be confusing, as it's not to be considered a 3.x
release, unlike 3.0, 3.1 and 3.2), and 4.0 is
definitely not going to support pre-1.4 JDKs (unlike
earlier versions, which could run on 1.2 or above,
with some caveats).

However, whether baseline should be 1.4 or 1.5 has not
yet been decided. I think you are right that currently
trunk has a depedency to one 1.5-only class
(XMLGregorianCalendar?). This was not fully
intentional, and can and will be changed if 1.4
compatibility is the goal.

So -- I think this is as good time as any: what do you
(and others) think about baseline JDK requirement for
Woodstox 4.0? Should it still work with 1.4, or is it
ok to move to 1.5 (== 5.0)?
I know many projects have discussed this, without
obvious clear answer. Woodstox is a fairly low-level
library/component, so there are valid reasons to try
to keep its requirements modest. And it does not
absolutely need 1.5 at this point. But at the same
time, many projects are moving to require 1.5.

Sounds like 1.4 compatibility is still something many
users would like to see for 4.0 release. To that end I
commented out references to XMLGregorianCalendar in
typed API extension, at least for now.

So let us consider baseline JDK for Woodstox 4.0 to be
Java 4 (nice coincident eh?).
