Thanks very much for this detailed announcement. I found it when
searching for information on why my 'etch' hosts did not have an
updated 'clamav-data' package available, despite the output from
'debsecan' indicated a new version *is* available.

However, the instructions on <URL:http://www.debian.org/volatile/>
don't mention 'etch-volatile' at all, and explicitly instruct 'etch'
users to set 'etch/volatile' as the distribution in 'sources.list'
records. I currently have that, and (as announced above) it's no
longer getting 'clamav-data' updates.

Can that page please be updated to show how this 'etch-volatile'
should be configured?

In the meantime, what should I be setting in my
'/etc/apt/sources.list.d/volatile.debian.net.list' to enable
'etch-volatile' updates to hosts running 'etch'?

the "Archive" section describes how to configure volatile. Maybe It should
be renamed to "How to use volatile?" to emphasize what id describes and
moved after "What is volatile?" section

Yes, but it doesn't mention anything called "etch-volatile", which the
announcement says I should be using.

It's not clear whether this is because there is no such thing as
'etch-volatile', or whether it's because the announcement or web page
is wrong, or whether they're both confusingly referring to the same
thing by different names, or something else.

deb http://volatile.debian.org/debian-volatile etch/volatile main contrib non-free

is the one you are looking for. "etch-volatile" in the announcement
obviously was shorthand for "the etch part of the volatile archive".

(also, clamav in volatile is still at 0.92.1 - we are all eagerly
awaiting 0.93 to finish the build process. Maybe you aren't getting a
new clamav-data package because you already have the current one?)

Only obvious if one can eliminate all the other possibilities, which I
had no basis for doing since I didn't know whether this was something
new in the announcement or something I might be missing elsewhere.

I'd appreciate if the writers of the announcements could take this
potential confusion into account in future; it would be entirely
alleviated by simply using the same names as are given in the
instructions.

That's likely the case, thanks.

This matches the specification at
<URL:http://www.debian.org/volatile/> and it also matches my
'/etc/apt/sources.list.d/volatile.debian.net.list':

    deb http://volatile.debian.net/debian-volatile/ etch/volatile main

According to
<URL:http://packages.qa.debian.org/c/clamav/news/20080520T173605Z.html>,
the 'clamav' package version '0.93~dfsg-volatile1' was accepted to the
'volatile' archive on 2008-05-20.

However, it's still not appearing today when I update:

What's going on here? The version announced to be in the archive since
2008-05-20 doesn't appear available on this machine at all, even
though I've updated the package list from that archive.

I got it via etch-proposed-updates/volatile

With kind regards, Jan.

 From http://volatile.debian.org/debian-volatile/ :

"The -proposed-distributions are _not_ for real usage. Uploaded packages enter
them without further checks, and they may subsequently be rejected (and
removed from the archive). So, if you use them, you risk to end up with
unrecommended packages."

Why is it no longer simply in etch/volatile? :-\
proposed-updates is mentioned nowhere, also not on http://volatile.debian.org/ ...

That's not what the instructions describe at
<URL:http://www.debian.org/volatile/>. They don't mention
'etch-proposed-updates' at all.

The latest announcement for support of 'volatile' on 'etch',
<URL:http://lists.debian.org/msgid-search/20080319111443.GA12943@...>,
also makes no mention of 'etch-proposed-updates'.

Can someone please explain why these announced updates are not
appearing from the 'etch/volatile' archive?

Or even better, make them appear there?

Thank you (that's to you who make them appear ;-),
