Perhaps we should provide the backend hinting in PPDs as an interim
solution and push the implementation of the Print Channel Manager
actively forward, raising funds/manpower ...

PCM does not solve this problem, and the spec does not address how
you would actually configure a device.  IMHO PCM is a dead-end.
