I'd like to update this with a few additional changes which will
I think be of interest to the average user. This also fixes the remaining
typo and inconsistent use of "." at ends of sentences. I suggest this
same text is used for the website (as we did for 1.3.3). Will do this
unless anyone suggests further changes.

Changes in 1.3.5:

Recording  / Playback
  * Several bugs fixed so that latency correction should be better,
and more devices work correctly. Problems with sample
rates under Linux should now be much rarer.
  * Newer version of Portaudio library.

Import / Export
  * Updated versions of Libogg, Libvorbis, Libflac, Libsndfile and Twolame
    libraries.
            * Handling of unsupported file formats more informative.
  * Handling of file names with slashes in on OS X improved. New dialog
allows replacement of illegal file name characters on all platforms.

Interface
  * Improved scaling and layout for rulers and VU meters.
        * Envelope fixes/improvements including full control of undo/redo.
        * New keyboard shortcuts and improved menu navigation.
        * Preferences: More intuitive tab arrangement. New options for
mute/solo and Metadata Editor behavior. Language can now
                be changed without restart.
        * Expanded Build Information tab.

Effects
           * New Vocal Remover plug-in, improvements for Generate effects.

Compilation:
  * Fixes when building Audacity with libraries disabled.
  * Improvements to make Mac and Solaris builds easier.

Security:
  * Full fix for issue CVE-2007-6061 on systems where temporary directories can
be changed by other users (thanks to Michael Schwendt).

Miscellaneous:
           * Updated translations for many locales.
    * Several stability improvements.

There are a few more active "Known Issues" online:
http://audacityteam.org/wiki/index.php?title=Known_Issues

than we have in the readme text. Add them or link to them?

Would it help reduce this file if older change log items were archived
online (probably Wiki) and just a link provided? I think Martyn
suggested this.

Might it be better if the credits/licence/libraries were moved to the
bottom? We could mention what we need to say in a couple of sentences
and people could go to the bottom for details if they want to. Might help
them get to the Compilation Instruction/Known Issues/Changelog easier.

Thanks

Gale

Certainly put a link to that page in the file, for whatever we find
after the release. A summary of the issues in the file is probably a
good idea for completeness.

Both done, and committed. I'm not sure if Vaughan's "all looks good"
was yes to all my ideas, but I've now restructured the file so that
the Changes in 1.3.5 and Known Issues are close to the top, and
older change log at bottom. This makes it easy to archive the old
change log online if we decide to do that, though we'll have to
decide where the cut off point is. If anyone is unhappy with the
structure, please shout.

PS I have not yet noted the "clicks during recording" issue in any
online or other documentation. Is this still consistently happening
for you, James? Is it basically a "watching brief"?

I'd suggest sending a recent build to Gerald Capodieci.  I'm expecting
1.3.5 and 1.3.6 to be close together releases.  The way I'd handle it is
to note it in release notes along the lines of:

'We've had reports of clicks during recording on some Windows XP systems
with 1.3.4 where 1.2.6 worked fine.  We don't know if the problem is
fixed with this build.'

For 1.3.6 we should be able to give a more definite statement based on
feedback from Gerald with 1.3.5.

Gerald, I'm not 100% sure if you are on Windows or Linux, but would
you be able to test a release candidate of 1.3.5 for us and see if it has
the same problem as 1.3.4? If so, is the problem consistent, or does
it not happen for every recording?

For Windows, there is an installer here:
http://audacity.sourceforge.net/files/audacity-win-unicode-1.3.5-rc3.exe

The installer will probably offer you the last directory you installed
1.3.4 into. You may want to change this so that you keep your
current 1.3.4 intact, but it's up to you.

Should you be on Linux, you could build from these sources:
http://audacity.sourceforge.net/files/audacity-src-1.3.5-rc3.tar.bz2

I understand you're using a sound device built into your motherboard.
Recording from the CD/DVD drive like you did before might be a good
test for comparison with 1.2.6.

That's now been added to README.txt with a request for any further
reports to be sent to this list.

Thanks

Thanks, Jerry. Should the link not work when you get to it, simply
try:

http://audacity.sourceforge.net/files/audacity-win-unicode-1.3.5-rc4.exe

or
http://audacity.sourceforge.net/files/audacity-win-unicode-1.3.5-rc5.exe

(rc4 has a bug that crashes Audacity if you Preview then Cancel the
Equalization effect more than once).

On XP with an Intel mainboard (D010GGC) using the on board sound card, Real Tech set at 96 KHZ/16 bit, the analog input worked without any pops and clicks using version
3.5-rc5.exe.
Is there a Default or recommended starter settings listing? When a new version is installed it takes the settings of an existing version. In trying to get rid of the pops and clicks in 1.3.4 I really changed a lot of settings to no avail but these may affect the current settings.
Are you going to make a commercial release any time soon?

That's good news. Let us know if it plays up on subsequent recording.
If James has time perhaps he can try rc5 on his setup?

The cleanest way in case you want to keep 1.2.6 is to edit the
audacity.cfg file that has the 1.3.x settings. You can delete that
file, but Audacity will still use the 1.2.x settings where they are
common with 1.3.x, unless you also delete the 1.2.x settings
(these are stored in the Windows registry).

* Exit Audacity
* Navigate to:
   Documents and Settings\<user name>\Application Data\Audacity\audacity.cfg
* Open audacity.cfg in a text editor and remove all the content except
   the top line "NewPrefsInitialized=1"
* Restart Audacity

This will give you factory 1.3.x settings (recordings will be made at
44100 Hz, 32 bit float).

> Are you going to make a commercial release any time soon?

We are of course free software, but the general hope is to release
a stable 1.4.0 towards the end of the year. Most of our development
tme in the Summer will be spent tutoring students who will be
developing new Audacity features, funded by Google's Summer of
Code program:

Good question. It was covered in the reference to "new keyboard
shortcuts", but you can also append-record by shift and click on the
Record button, so it's not exclusively accessed by a shortcut. I'll
add a mention to "Playback / Recording" in README unless anyone
objects.

Thanks

Go ahead - this has been in so long I more or less forgot it wasn't in
1.3.4.
