I bought an Insteon (both serial and USB) and tried the drivers with them.
But, unfortunately, they have changed the protocol and the drivers will not
work with the Insteon.  I have contacted SmartHome about this as they have a
developers kit, but the licensing agreement for the kit would prohibit me
from releasing my drivers in open source.

So, I have not pursued the Insteon hardware any further.

It could be that he was able to enter into a special agreement with them
that I have not been able to get.  I did try contacting their sales, legal,
and engineering heads to find out if there was any way for me to proceed,
but never got a response from anyone.  The way I got their attention before
was by sniffing the protocol between their software and the device, but now
when you buy the software the license to the software specifically prohibits
that.

Personally, I cannot afford to have a company sue me for violating the
license agreement on an open-source project so until SmartHome is willing to
say (put it in writing) that I can develop the drivers and release the
source to the drivers, I won't be pursuing this.

My guess is that the x10dev project either pissed off some of their partners
because I took business or in some way the x10dev project hurt Smarthome's
business such that they don't want to deal with me.  Maybe that is to
negative.
