But is that to say that you don't know of any test to verify weather or not my USB port on the d11 is enabled?  I bought cables with the exact part numbers as described in the how so I wouldn't expect them to be the problem. However I have seen stranger things.  I'm willing to let someone remote in if they feel up to it at this point, but that would obviously have to be arranged privately.

Mine has worked great for me.  I have had the following work for over a year with no problems:

mythbe1 serial port -> Null Modem (I wired this myself rather then buying one) -> IOGear Serial to USB -> DirectTV D11 Tuner

or

mythbe1 USB port -> IOGear Serial to USB -> Null Modem (I wired this myself rather then buying one) -> IOGear Serial to USB -> DirectTV D11 Tuner

Mine did not work at all until I got the null modem wiring working right.

PS. There errors I get are "excesive retries" with /dev/ttyUSB0 as my port.
