Adirondack CC in Queensbury NY
had an abstract algebra course “lite.” It was intended as an
introduction to proofs, an introduction to abstract algebra so that the senior
level course at the transfer schools didn’t fail students out, and a
chance to have some fun. When I was first assigned it, I had to question
the department chair, just to make sure: “You really mean finite fields?
Like Zp?? Right???” I thought it was unusual for a 2 yr
college to offer something like that. Anyway, I might suggest topics that
are more towards the “funner” side of math to include proofs with
(not to offend anyone for whom set theory rocks their world but the axiom of
choice...can I choose not?). The disjunctive normal form of logical
statements, yeah, it is nice to know you can do all possible logic tables
whatsoever, but I think it might turn students off.

Another question - different class, so different email!
A few of us have been talking about the idea of a 200 level
'Foundations of Mathematics' course. It would be an introduction to proofs type
of course with set theory, logic, plus other topics that are not yet decided.
Do any of the other community colleges on this list offer such a
course?
