Preparation of presentations

Hi *,

Experience of various OOo Cons, as well as other conferences, shows that
it is not everybodies 2nd nature to give a clear and understandable
presentation right away. Nothing wrong with that; not every presentation
is - for example - meant to win an audience with ceo's for a certain
idea. OTOH, it is clear that the basic understanding of presentations
sometimes can profit a lot of some basic preparations. Which is in the
interest of both public and speaker.
Is anything organized/offered for the speakers, so that they have a
little help, when they are not so experienced? I think about
- sound and light check;
- attention to the audience;
- choice in amount of information directly presented;
- ...

Cor

the venue has professional equipment, so this should be no problem. We
will have someone to adjust the volume if necessary.

> - attention to the audience;

This is also often a question having the right equipment. Last year in
Barcelona the main hall had a lectern, so the speaker only had to move
the eyes slightly down to read at the screen and then look at the
audience again. Other rooms had only classroom desks. Hence, the speaker
needs to significantly move his head and the relation to the audience
breaks. What I have seen so far, we have lecterns at the rooms.

> - choice in amount of information directly presented;

This is really hard to do for us. Maybe speakers could provide there
drafts on a server and provide the link to this mailing list, asking for
review.

Peter

Situation at the venue indeed can do a lot of good.
But for 2nd and 3rd (...) point, the speaker him/herself has (main or
only) influence.
I doubt about reviewing all presentations beforehand.
Maybe a four-slide presentations with main points at this level?
Probably there is something on the internet (I do not mean long
readings, but just short and clear)? Anyone ever came across such a thing?

I would second this kind of mentorship should be a community task.

Agree with you here. If no one has something at hand, I'll give it a try
(somewhere the next weeks).

I would strongly recommend to put the file on the OOo wiki (please also
consider to link it into the appropriate categoies), as it's surely also
usable for the next OOoCon. Don't forget to announce the link here. ;-)

Peter

I am about to post my presentation to
ooocon2008_discuss@... as John said, see his
message below.

But I will follow your recommendation.  Which wiki page can we upload
our presentation to?

Thanks,

That's how it should be.

This is a misunderstanding, as this discussion was interrupted for
several weeks.
Cor is not referring to a presentation to be given at the OOoCon, but a
'presentation about presenting' in order to guide unexperienced speakers
about best practices and things to avoid while standing in front of the
audience.

Best regards,
Peter
