Powerpoint for teachers

I've been teaching beginning progrmaming courses using robocode for
some time now.  Usually, I just wing it on the blackboard.  But now
that LCD Projectors are becoming commonplace in most computer labs, I
tought of becoming more oranized.

I was thinking of making powerpoint slides to help me teach robocode
and java to middle school kids (ages 11 - 13).  However, I feel like
I'm probably re-inventing the wheel.  So first, I thought I'd ask.

Does anyone have PPT slides to teach robocode and java to middle school
students?

Best,
Edwin

Hi Edwin,

Unfortunately, I do no have any PPT slides for Robocode, but I think it
would be a very good idea with such slides!

Best regards,
- Flemming N. Larsen, Robocode administrator and developer

Hi Edwin

We run a competition in Ireland see robocode.ie , I will
people that attend. If nobody has put slides together, then
maybe both of us could. Would be glad to help.

How are you? It's been a long while since we spoke for the last time.

Please let me know should you need any help with this powerpoint.

Sorry I forgot about this post.  I was at a classroom at the time,
preparing to teach Robocode.  In the heat of the moment, I got a
flash of inspiration.  Why not make PPT slides?  Thus the post.

Anyway, I do want to get back to this issue.  Until now, I only had
enough demand to hold one class per term.  Now I have two classes
coming up.  When the next school year starts, I expect to get more.
It seems the emphasis on A.P. Computer Science is fueling the need
for introductory Java classes in the lower grades.

Best,
Edwin

Hello, Edwin,

I got amazed with how soon basic computer science is being taught in
Brazil. I wonder all the things they will be able to do as they start
that early.

I would like to help you with that slides should you still want the
extra hands.

Regards,

Gustavo

I used to have a (Terrapin) Logo class for 8 year olds.
Unfortunately, there hasn't been much interest lately in "dated"
software.  That's sad because Dr. Seymour Papert developed Logo to
help very young students learn how to program the turtle.

My current Robocode class has eight 12 - 14 year olds.  They can
keyboard, run battles, copy and paste from one robot to another, sort
of understand x and y, and have an elementary grasp of what variables
are.

The robocode battle theme keeps the interest level high.  However,
the overhead is a lot higher than using plain old Logo turtle
graphics.  For teaching fundamentals, I'd much rather use Logo.

O course, the trick is to keep the interest level from fading when
the hard thinking begins.  As the saying goes, "A child will learn
long division, when he wants to."
