Active D Lighting actually works fine - even in manual mode. I tried it the first time when i

I am looking for input... I would like to hear from you about sites that present panos well. I'm
I don't know if Linux and Mac have something like this. Though I'm pretty sure every Windows version since 95 do have CD autostart functionality.

I use the projector executable Flash gives me (it can create projectors for Windows and Mac as well).
If there was some "trojan" software inside the CD, being fullscreen or not wouldn't make any difference at all, the whole "bad" stuff could be easily hidden even if the pano was in a window. Also, using Actionscript the programmer can make the SWF go fullscreen anytime he wants.

But I hope my clients trust me.
By the way, I always give the option to switch to a window mode.

> Yes, it's possible, I've done it.

Are you sure? I hope that on my Linux and Mac installations, a CD would
never be "autostarted" (except if it is a boot CD and I reboot the
machine) and certainly not in full screen (this is a far too easy way of
e.g. faking a log-in prompt as shown when resuming from the
screen-saver, and doing not-so-nice things with user account data)... I
know that there was something like a autostart function on some Windows
versions, but as far this was a very platform-specific "feature".
> that’s a real good question, sorry for laughing ;-)
> Seriously, the flight deck shows the current speed (85 mp/h) and
> that’s good , cause otherwise we would do a nosedive ;-)
> Of Course I understand your question.. Due to the speed, there should
> be lots of parallax.
> To avoid this you can go one like this.
> Shot the pic's quick but also pointedly every 90°. Let's just say it
> takes 8 seconds, that's okay.
> When stitching the pictures the controlpoints shout only be set on
> the plane. The landscape is far away enough so lots of things get
> corrected via the stitcher. (Since years I’m very happy with PTGui)
> All other aberration you can adjust via Layertechnics with a graphical
> software subsequently. (I use PS CS2).
>
> @ JeanPierre Lavoie:
> For this pano I used a Canon400D with the Sigma 8mm/F3,5, a homemade
> bracket, a central pillar from a tripod, a cable release and lot's of
> crepe tape ;-)

I don't have the range of experience with other cameras that Matt and
some of the rest of you have, but I am very happy indeed with the
dynamic range of my S5Pro. I bought it after some very convincing
advice from Matt, and I haven't regretted it even for a second.

The only two flies in the ointment, as far as I'm concerned, are the
relative lack of *proper* support for the camera's RAW output and
Fuji's trash-worthy bundled software.
Adone Camera RAW and some other third-party tools see the RAW files
as 6.1MP rather than 12.2MP images, misunderstanding the way the
SuperCCD sensor structure works. However, Bibble Pro supports the
format properly and does an excellent job, saving me from having to
work with Fuji's software.

In short, believe the hype: the Fuji S5Pro is everything that Matt says.
> > >
> > > It seems that the ADR function selected using the shooting
> > > memory IS active and DOES produce noticeably brighter shadow
> > > areas, effectively enhancing the ability to capture images
> > > of subjects with a wide dynamic range. To my mind, this
> > > makes the resulting images have a COMPRESSED dynamic range,
> > > but everyone seems to apply the term that actually refers
> > > to the subject to the IMAGE of the subject instead...
> > >
> > > I'll abandon that quibble, though, since it's preety clear
> > > what we mean by "high dynamic range."
> > >
> > > There seem to be two things going on. The exposure as a
> > > whole is shifted to a lower value than would normally be
> > > set, e.g., by the exposure program, giving more "head
> > > room" above the highlights, while at the same time the
> > > darker areas are slightly boosted.
> > >
> > > The visibility of this effect varies quite widely for
> > > different subjects, but at "low" or "normal" settings it
> > > is fairly subtle. I now use "high" as my default.
> > >
> > > The corresponding ADR function available via the "retouch"
> > > menu is a fiercer beast, and produces very clear effects,
> > > sometimes overdoing it. For one thing it immediately uses
> > > up any headroom above highlights. And if there were
> > > already a few "blown" areas, these will increase in size
> > > a little. The shadow areas can also tend to become too
> > > "thin" and grey. I reach for the black definition slider...
> > >
> > > I have yet to do any stitching with/without these functions
> > > and will report my experiences if and when I can make
> > > sense of them.
> > >
> > > You might like to note that separate settings for brightness
> > > and contrast are not available if you choose one of the
> > > Active D-Lighting options. D-lighting makes its own choices
> > > for these.
> The camera measures the scene before recording the image (dynamic

So does this effectively provide preset image adjustments alongside
the actual RAW captured values? Or is it actually manipulating the
that’s a real good question, sorry for laughing ;-)
For this pano I used a Canon400D with the Sigma 8mm/F3,5, a homemade
bracket, a central pillar from a tripod, a cable release and lot's of

> If it effectively increases the dynamic range, that seems to
> be a strong point in its favour. I hesitated over whether to
> get a Fujipro S5 (technology that is two year's old) because
> of the advantage in dynamic range.
>

This is a common misconception with D-Lighting and also the bit depth
of the DA conversion process. The dynamic range of an image is
captured at the sensor level. You can use as many tricks as you want
to try and smooth out the problem of limited dynamic range but you
can't invent new pixels. The dynamic range of both the d300 and d700
are noticeably better than the d200 but no camera can match the S5Pro
nor can they match the tonal range or colours.

Unless you absolutely need the increased resolution the D300 offers
you'd be better off with the S5Pro. I can still instantly spot an
S5Pro thumbnail on my desktop amongst dozens of others. Regardless of
what everyone says you simply cannot match an S5Pro or S3Pro image via
the RAW conversion process from other cameras.
> > >
> > >
> > >
> > >
> > >
> > >
D-lighting makes its own choices
> > > for these.
> will not be used if
> you take your images with manually setting the aperture and speed :-(
> The camera measures the scene before recording the image (dynamic range,
> aperture) and will choose a (hopefully) right decision to conserve the
> maximum of details of
> that scene. The camera can not do that when it is set to "M" (manual)...
> So i rarely use that feature with panoramas - sigh...

BumMER!

I noted that you cannot set contrast and brightness, as Active D-Lighting
takes over those functions, but if it can't (or won't) help when you
set aperture and speed manually, that's er, DISTINCTLY unhelpful.

I would have thought they'd let it do its best under all circumstances!
Inscrutable are the ways of Nikon.
>> > If you turn on ADL in the camera (D300) you can always "turn it off"
>> > during RAW conversion in Capture NX. However, you cannot do the
> reverse.
>>
>> Well, you can if you shoot RAW. <grin>
>
>
> This is not the case. If you have Active D-Lighting turned off in the
> camera, the option to use activate it is not available when working
> with the raw file in Capture NX.

Sorry for the misunderstanding, I was replying to the first part of
your comment. I didn't understand what you meant after that.

>> > Keep in mind Active D-Lighting is very different from D-Lighting.
>>
>> What do you mean? Are you referring to the difference between the
> shooting
>> opion and the retouching option? I think I have THAT straight. I can't
>> think
>> what else you might mean...
>
> Active D-Lighting acts more like an applied curve, in that it has the
> same effect on all images regardless of content. D-Lighting is
> calculated based on the content of the image, applying it in different
> ways for each image. If you use D-Lighting on a group of images to be
> stitched, you will find that they won't always match each other. Using
> Active D-Lighting, they will.

So you WERE refering to the same thing. "Active" seems like it should be
called "passive" since it applies equally to all images without differen-
tiating between them. I was pretty sure that what you say about D-Lighting
would prove to be true, i.e., that it would affect different images
differently. Hopefully the blend features in PTgui, which have frequently
succeeded in producing acceptable panoramas for me despite wide disparities
between adjacent shots caused by my ignorance or carelessness, will be
able to cope with these differences.

Have you given it a good work out? I'd be interested to
hear more details of your experiences. I only got my camera
the other day and the weather has been awful since...

> to get an unaltered RAW which can be tweaked later in any way.

Well, you can still get RAW (ADR can be coupled with the
RAW shooting option) and tweak it later if you need to. The
main advantage I can see is that you have something closer
to usable straight from the camera. It is only the very
powerful RETOUCH tool that forces you into JPEG.

If it effectively increases the dynamic range, that seems to
be a strong point in its favour. I hesitated over whether to
get a Fujipro S5 (technology that is two year's old) because
of the advantage in dynamic range. The D300 won out for
various reasons but I was happy to see this ADR feature as,
maybe, making up for the defects I found in the D200 with
its narrow dynamic range. Of course I was coming from film,
so probably nothing digital was going to satisfy me... <g>

> There are two ways for me to lighten shadows if required
> - PS Raw converter " Fill light"
> - PS Shadow/Highlight function.

I like the "fill light" function, which works very well. I
don't like to use the PS shadow/highlight function. I prefer
to keep out of PS as far as possible. Too easy for me to get
trapped in an unending downward spiral of adjustments that
take me further and further away from the original image.

My hope (untested as yet) is that stitching of images produced
using ADR will give good results with less pre- and post-
processing.
> > memory IS active and DOES produce noticeably brighter shadow
> > areas, effectively enhancing the ability to capture images
> > of subjects with a wide dynamic range.
> >
> >
> >
> >
> >
> >
D-lighting makes its own choices
> > for these.
