PXE boot problemI'm a relatively new user of ThinStation, and have been deploying it on a couple of different, older PCs with great success.
I'm currently trying to add some Compaq D510U PCs to the network, but have been unable to get them to boot via PXE. Initially, they wouldn't even attempt to load the initial PXE files. Google-ing around, I found that these and other Compaqs require the DHCP server to have the "Bootfile size" option set. Once that was added, they proceeded to process the initial PXE boot file, but get stuck before loading the boot image. All messages post normally to the screen (ie: PXE -> EB ok Etherboot 5.3.5 (GPL) ... Tagged ELF for [UNDI] Probing PCI NIC ... [UNDI] Hunting for PnP BIOS ... found Hunting for pixies ... found etc. The we get to the part that appears to be a problem: Initializing UNDI driver. Please wait ... UNDI API call 0x0000 failed with status 0x006a Hunting for pixies ... none found Hunting for ROMs ... found 55AA at 000c0000 ... [UNDI] Hunting for PnP BIOS ... found Hunting for pixies ... found ...and on and on I'm running the latest version of ThinStation v2.2.1 I generated the boot images using TS-O-matic The server is Windows Server 2003 Using built-in DHCP server Serving images using TFTPServerSP v1.4 These PCs are Compaq D510U's (System BIOS v1.03 - latest available) Intel Pentium Celeron 1.3GHz/256MB Intel 845G chipset Integrated Intel Extreme Graphics Integrated Intel PRO/100 VM (Intel Boot Agent v4.0.19) (PXE 2.1 Build 083 (WFM 2.0), RPL v2.73) I have tried connecting a CD-ROM drive, and booting the LiveCD. It boots right away to the desktop, and can connect to our servers via RDesktop without any problem. These are perfect little PCs for our application. Any help to get them working via PXE would be greatly appreciated. -Fred Williams ------------------------------------------------------------------------- This SF.Net email is sponsored by the Moblin Your Move Developer's challenge Build the coolest Linux based applications with Moblin SDK & win great prizes Grand prize is a trip for two to an Open Source event anywhere in the world http://moblin-contest.org/redirect.php?banner_id=100&url=/ _______________________________________________ Thinstation-general mailing list Thinstation-general@... https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/thinstation-general |

I have always found this quite confusing. These were originally designed to work with nics that don't support pxe. As the hardware seems to support pxe, just use the stuff under the pxe tab on the download page of your TSoM build. eg. pxelinux.0 (which is what your dhcp server should be pointing at) vmlinuz initrd pxelinux.cfg/default Trevor B > The we get to the part that appears to be a problem: > > Initializing UNDI driver. Re: PXE boot problemHello Fred I think you need to set option 66 and 67 on your DHCP server. The path to the file and the server ip. Re: PXE boot problem
Trevor,
Thanks for the quick reply ... and the solution. We were indeed using the thinstation.nbi files; I can't tell you why, because the gentleman who set it up that way is no longer with us. Switching to using the files under the PXE tab worked, and the Compaq loaded the image. The other workstations (which had been booting fine using thinstation.nbi) booted perfectly under the new configuration, with the added bonus of getting a splash screen, which never worked before. The only other issue with the Compaqs is by no means a showstopper like the previous problem, but I am curious to resolve it. Although they load the image all the way to the end, it's always in verbose mode, ie: no splash screen. I suspect a video problem; there is a message early on that reads "You passed an undefined mode number". It then says I can press Enter to see available modes, but it never really pauses to give me the chance. Initially, after booting, the Compaqs wouldn't bring up RDesktop at all; adding the AGP Module "intel-agp" to the image solved that problem, but still no splash screen. Anyway, thanks again for you assistance. -Fred On Fri, 18 Jul 2008 10:52:44 +1000, Trevor Batley wrote: >On Thu, 2008-07-17 at 17:37 -0400, Fred Williams wrote: >> I'm a relatively new user of ThinStation, and have been deploying it on a couple of different, older PCs with great success. >> >> I'm currently trying to add some Compaq D510U PCs to the network, but have been unable to get them to boot via PXE.
