My name is Martin von Frantzius, composer from Germany. I liked very much, what I saw and read about PWGL, so I'd like to try it on my system, but there seem to be some problems:

1.) If I want to open the Audio/Midi settings, an error is produced:

External format: ASCII got error reading #<Pointer to type (:UNSIGNED :CHAR) = #x0018C9A8> at position 16: Non-ASCII code 228. Would you like to debug...

But when I open a patch, containig objects, or if I put objects in a patcher, although they are shown on the screen, the program somehow freezes. It produces a high processor load. I can't move objetcs or other things or have to wait very long. It doesn't crash.

My system:

- Win XP Professional Version 2002 SP 2
- Intel Core 2 Quad CPU Q6600 @ 2.4 GHz
- ATI Radeon HD 2600 Pro
- I use: RME Fireface 400 as ASIO Sound Device (+ Sound Blaster Live Value for "normal" Windows Sound)
Visual C++ 2005 is already installed on my system.

It seems to have to do with Audio or my quad CPU?...Is it possible to turn audio feature off? I would use PWGL mostly for computer assisted composition and not for generating sounds.

thanks a lot for your help,

Dear users,

As some of you already know the PWGL project is mainly supported
financially by the Academy of Finland (the main governmental funding
body for scientific research in Finland). Thus our salaries and
expenses are covered with grants.

Now I am in the process of applying a new grant. For this I would like
to know how and for what purposes our software is used. Especially I
am interested if PWGL is used pedagogically in institutions. If you
know such cases or plans please send me directly (laurson@...) a
short description of this activity and the name and the address of the
institution. I would need this information within the next the week or
so.

Thanks for your cooperation.

Best regards,

yes, at least my documentation was close to NIL...

First of all, make sure that you are using the latest version (rc-11).

I have attached the code now as a zip file. Maybe something happened
during transfer... anyway I changed some things to avoid syntax
changes in the future. Put these files to PWGL-User/ENP/autoloads/

DOC:

If you want to add a new bpf proto you:

(1) create it with the "def-score-bpf-prototype" macro as in the
example (see bpf-protos.lisp). With "name" you give the NAME of you
prototype. Category is ignored at the moment... fn is anything that in
the end creates and returns an instance of "C-break-point-function". x/
y points should be fitted inside the ranges, i.e., start-time, end-
time, min-val, and max-val. The example doesn't do this ;-)

GUI USAGE:

In the score editor:

(1) add a score-bpf as before

(2) select score-bpf(s) and type l (= lower case L)

(3) choose from the list

-Mika

On 22.9.2008, at 7:25, mauricio rodriguez wrote:
> Hi Mika,
>
> Thank you for your very fast reply. I saved the text you sent me on
> the “autoloads” file in PWGL-user and whenever I try launching PWGL
> either of the following messages appear in the terminal:
>
>
> Error: In a call to FIND-CLASS: (LET ((FUNCTIONS #)) (WHEN-LET (FN
> #) (MAPC # SELECTED-OBJECTS))) is not of type CLOS::SYMBOLS.
>
> ENP-KEY-EVENT already defined in /Users/mikaellaurson/PWGLXP/PWGL-
> code/enp/key-events/general.lisp
>
> As you see, there is an erratic behavior implied in the function
> call ENP-KEY-EVENT. I checked the syntax of the function and
> everything seems to be correct (I just matched the wrong variable in
> the loop part with the right one) but still I do not see what the
> problem can be.
>
>
> To just check the bpf method you sent me as example, I did not
> succeed in making and instance of the it (to call the 'C-break-point-
> function object) I assume I have to call it with some arguments such
> as:
>
> (score-bpf-prototype 'bpf 'random t 0.0 1.0 0 1.0 'default 'float)
> or something alike but not good luck so far.
>
> Can you give me some hints to solve the puzzle?
>
> Best,
>
>>
>> For copying, use the following (for autoloading save it into PWGL-
>> Users/ENP/autoloads/somefilename.lisp) to copy-paste expressions (to
>> chords at the moment).
>>
>> (in-package :ccl)
>>
>> #-copy-expressions
>> (defmethod paste-ENP-object((copied-object CONS) (object-type
>> expression) (target CHORD))
>> (dolist (obj copied-object)
>> (insert-expression target obj)))
>>
>> For adding to the BPF library you can use the following code
>> (autoloading as above). This is a quick hack for the moment... I try
>> to polish this for the future and add it to the kernel ... all you
>> would need to do is to create new score-bpf-prototype methods as in
>> the example.
>>
>> (in-package :ccl)
>>
>> #-add-bpf-from-menu
>> functions bpf))))
>> (redraw (subview score)))
>>
>>> Hi there,
>>>
>>> I am wonder if there exist a way to add user-defined templates to
>>> the library of BPF-score (something equivalent to the predefined:
>>> bpf Library/basics/Ramp-up available in the menu-option of the BPF-
>>> score). When having complex BPF-scores associated to a note or a
>>> group o notes it is very hard to edit the bpf coordinates by hand
>>> (things could be easier through algorithmic generation). The
>>> scenario is worst if one try to clone a given BPF associated to
>>> another note(s). It will be great having the possibility of storing
>>> user-defined BPF templates, as it happens with the other visual-
>>> tools such a as Note-head Designer and Expression-Designer and quote
>>> them in different locations of the ENP-score window.
>>>
>>> Does anyone has tried and/or solved a similar task? Please let me

Hi Josué,

Just a quick answer to your question.
In file mode you should use an oscillator trigger in order to get
sound (see the attached patch).

For more advanced cases you could consider using scores to generate
triggering information.

We should add more tutorials for this topic.
>
> I have a problem with synth-box in file mode, my patch has some
> triggers so when I press "v" and then the triggers it never happens
> to get any sound file output, actually it has some audio file output
> but with no sound in.
>
> Is it me who doesnt know how to use the synth box? or it doesnt work
> in a patch with triggers? (It can be the second since the file is
> created as soon as I press v)
>
> thanks,
>

I want to create a recursive abstraction but I'm having problems with the

Luis,

There are two primary ways:

(1) "Lisp" box. It contains an editor just like the text box. In
contrast to the text box - that is passive - the Lisp box evaluates
its contents every time you open the patch. The functions and
variables defined in a Lisp box are, however, per patch only (although
you can use the functions - deliberately or inadvertently - in other
patches but this will break the loading of these patches).

(2) The User-library. If you have a collection of Lisp functions and
data you want to reuse you should concider making a personal user-
library. You can find the documentation in the PWGL Tutorial. You can
then use SHIFT-U ("Autoload libraries...") to set your library to be
loaded automatically each time you start PWGL.

hope this helps!
> variables like that is perhaps not the best way unless you are
> completely sure what you are doing. You CAN use eval-box to access the

Hello,

how to access n PWGL to a variable that was defined in a Lisp-code-box
with something like (setf var '(1 2 3))?

I tried the eval-box but I get the message of "variable unbound".

Hi Killian,

Many thanks again for your answer.

Yes, I have understood the necessary syntax. Well, indeed in this moment I am searching to understand how to work with rythm in PWGL; I find that the tutorials of PWGL are not really clear about the syntax needed to work correctly with evrey different object included and the documentation is not enough, of course, so KSQuant is an excellent help.

Thanks again for your help.

Cheers,

Javier

Hi!

This is my first post here.
I posted it to the mailing list address first, but didn't receive it, so I hope I'm not double posting...

I managed to find PWGL after testing some alternatives to notatate polymetric music, music with multiple parallel tempi etc.

This program looks promising indeed.
I liked also the example samples of the physically modeled guitar.

After browsing through the tutorials, I have one question right away:

How do you playback the score?
Either using a midi output or internal synthesis (physically modeled guitar patch for an example)?

Thanks!

Kaspar

Hi Javier,

you are welcome. Of course, you could achieve the same effect also
by using the pwgl-map like in your first patch - and you might need to do
this if you want to do more complicated things like adding expressions to
the simple-format. - Well, it should work also, just pay attention to this last
end-time value...

Best,
> Oh, yes, I can understand now! It is really "simple-to-scoring" with
> "pitches-dur2simpe" ;-)
> Many thanks again.
> Hi,
> very nice coloring in your patch! :)
> Your are making a small mistake with the simple-format.
> For your example it should be like this:
> ((0 :NOTES (74)) (3.24 :NOTES (73)) (6.099 :NOTES (69)) (8.594 :NOTES
> (65)) (10.742 :NOTES (71)) (12.563 :NOTES (67)) (14.076 :NOTES (67))
> (15.302 :NOTES (71)) (16.265 :NOTES (69)) (16.988999 :NOTES (66))
> (17.502999 :NOTES (67)) (17.839999 :NOTES (68)) (18.039999 :NOTES
> (65)) 18.164999)
> Note the last element in the list that is only a number for marking
> the end time of the voice.
> There is a box that can produce this automatically from your data, so
> I am sending you a patch
> with an added pitches-durs2simple box.
> Cheers,
> Hi,
> I am using simple2score function from KSQuant library and I found a singular
> feature, I don't know if I am not understand something.
> I am searching to obtain both the original and the retrograde of a rythmic
> sequence from a list of 13 durations. Generating a list of 14 off-set values
> from a dx->x function starting from zero, I need to repeat the last value in
> the list to obtain the correct sequence of 13 notes. It is a little extrange
> because if I have added an off-set of zero, I can't understand why I need to
> add the last value two consecutive times -indeed I lost always the last
> note-.
> I send the original patch.
> Thanks for any answer.

Hi,

very nice coloring in your patch!

Cheers,
  Kilian

> Hi,
> I am using simple2score function from KSQuant library and I found a singular
> feature, I don't know if I am not understand something.
>

Hi Mika,

Many thanks for your answer.

Of course I use the “panning“ feature and indeed it is fantastic. However I think somtimes that it would be useful to can scroll the window, above all because in some cases I would like to see the objects at 100% in a more extended algorithm. Other problem is when you copy an object from a zoomed patch -reduced-: the new position of this object in the new work space -in a not zoomed patch- sometimes is really difficult to find.

I think that it would be great to have both possibilities: scroll and zoom, do you think that it would be possible?

Many thanks for your kind answer.

Cheers,

Javier

You know about "panning" with the middle mouse button? (drag an empty

Hallo,

I am very new with PWGL.
Three questions please.
Is it posible with PWGL to read chord or partial analysis made with the Audio Sculpt?
If not is there any other software that the PWGL accepts as a source of the above analysis?
Is there any way the PWGL after reading the chord sequence analysis or partial analysis from Audio Sculpt to generate with them a score like for example Open music does with the om->finale?
I ask the above because I use them in my work and I must say that I like much-much more PWGL than OM.

Thank you a lot,
