Subsequent testing on a cap. meter often shows pretty close to correct
>>> But I agree that maybe a dedicated PC would be easier. The problem
>>> is that they are not so cute as Wii.
>
> Let us know if you have success with streaming video on Wii. I think
> I tried Orb??? last year when I got my Wii, but the resolution was not
> good and the streaming wasn't smooth. My wireless router could be the
> problem, but have yet to try it with the new router.
>

I have not tried Ord but I feel I would not like it. I am reluctant to
register another user name and password. And it is said the video
quality is not good.

> For the time being, my streaming method is through flash-key plus
> short leg work, and the media center is a 12" laptop.
>

We have currently the Western Digital Mybook World Edition
500GB NAS running Linux as the file server and printer
server. It works fine and we can play media through it.
The router is the Linksys WRT54G running Tomato firmware.
So it is ok to have the wireless connected Desktop and notebook
playing media through the NAS.

Still I'd like to let Wii or EEEpc or similar which is hooked to the
42" HD Ready (not full HD) LCD to play the media instead of the
4 PCs and 2 mobile devices (my wife's Nokia E71 and her brother's
HP iPaq 210 PDA which has wifi and 4 inch 640x480 VGA screen).
is a weird Korea made, and now it can only play (when the disc is
control. Sometime I am quite amazed with the intelligent of these
This is not a joke, a real product.

>> On the other hand, some people say the old Xbox works very well
>> for this task. I might want to look for some 2nd items.

Yes, it is basically a pentium machine, it can be made to run window

William "Chops" Westfield wrote:

> It's tough call. I figure that ideally I need three cameras:
> 1) DSLR
> 2) super-zoom P&S.
> 3) Pocket-size P&S.

Hey guys...

I love reading engineers thoughts on cameras. I also have always been
an "admire from afar" camera person...

My parents were both semi-pro photographers in former lives... but any
good photo I've ever taken (even after some classes) is still pretty
much an accident.

All I really ever use are P&S cameras, and I toy with the idea of buying
a low-end DSLR... but I don't really need it. Portability and being
rugged enough to "live" in a laptop bag in a pocket are probably the key
"design factors" I'd look for in a new camera at this point in time.

So, I'm thinking about upgrading the VERY old P&S I have (ancient
Nikon), so to change from middle-to-high-end DSLR's as a topic of
conversation to the P&S's... what do people like?

Other "nice to have" features besides the rugged and small, would be
low-light shooting indoors (lit, but like... table and desk lamps and
things... older houses that don't have a lot of night-time light is
where a lot of my family lives... no overhead room can lights and
things, just table lamps and floor lamps), and fast response time for
candid shots. It would be preferrable if the light response was good
enough that shots without flash indoors at night (with lights on) would
be possible without massive blurring when the camera is hand-held.

I also really hate it when it takes forever to a. shoot the photo once
the button is pressed, and b. recover for the next shot. a is more
important than b to me, however... if I don't MISS the candid shot
up-front, the camera doesn't really have to recover quickly for the next
>> That's an interesting thought, but a lender can't reposses a college
>> education nor anything else of such an intangible nature. I suppose
>> you could argue that a lender could be allowed to garnish wages in the
>> same manner the state is allowed to in order to recoup its money but
>> that would be a long term exercise.
>>
>> Sending the debt collectors around to take your Car, TV or home
>> cinema system is OK. Sending a surgeon around to lobotomise you is
>> probably not-so where's the deterrant stoping borrowers from
>> defaulting on loans for intangible purchases? The deterrant should be
>> that the loan is secured on an asset of value like a home or car but
>> credit cards and unsecured loans are easy to come by.
>
> That's probably why government-backed education loans can't be dismissed
> in bankruptcy. It's been a while since I read the terms of some of my
> loans, but I think they can garnish wages as well. Then there's your
> credit score which will take a nosedive, preventing you from ripping off
> other creditors.

Interestingly they ARE discharged at death (unless something's changed I
haven't read about) and are not charged to your estate, making them a
darn good deal to just leave hanging around out there, as long as your
interest rate on them is low and fixed. Lenders figured this out, and
started using variable rates in the early 2000's for most of them, at
least here in the U.S.

But if you're one of the "lucky" who has one at 2% or 3% and it's a huge
amount... it's one of the only forms of long-term debt you can safely
just leave alone and defer when/if really bad times hit you.

Personally I just won't spend giant dollars on anything, including
education, if there's not an expected return to pay it off... but those
becoming Doctors, Lawyers, Researchers, whatever... who need those
hugely expensive degrees, don't really have to worry about anything
other than making the monthly payments on student loan debt, if they can
get their interest rate fixed. If you die before you pay it off, it
literally gets "eaten" by the government.

Someone mentioned fascism in relation to student loans, and I was kinda
shocked... they're about as pure a socialism play that still gives the
lender a (small) reason to lend, as a loan can get. They're a pretty
good vehicle for both lenders and recipients. Again... here in the U.S.
anyway, if you qualify for the Federally-backed ones.

PRIVATE student loans can be really tricky waters to navigate. They're
almost always variable-rate, and if you've not done the math and decided
if the degree is really worth the possible WORST-CASE scenario to you
(calculate the maximum payments over time and make a spreadsheet)...
walk away. The terms are not ALWAYS favorable to the recipient, if you
take ten minutes to think in terms of downside, and not upside potential
from them.

Education loans are still, even with some whitewater to navigate in the
private ones, one of the best long-term debt deals out there... how many
hundreds of thousands of people wouldn't be able to pay for higher
education without them? They're definitely a Good Thing(TM)... if
managed properly, and if you qualify for the Federally-backed ones.

(If you don't qualify, you're making quite a bit more money than the
median U.S. salary anyway, and you might want to reconsider whether
higher education will provide an adequate return on investment... if
you're not in it strictly for self-edification and education. Even
then... you can learn a lot in a library, and those are free.)
>>
>> They say Xbox 360 works well. PS3 can do it as well but not as good as
>> Xbox 360.
>
> Too pricey for me. We already have a Wii for the kids, so another game
> system really isn't needed for us.
>
>> But I agree that maybe a dedicated PC would be easier. The problem
>> is that they are not so cute as Wii.
>
> I'm sticking mine in an old Sony 50 CD changer case. The case is tall and
> wide, but wasn't deep enough, so I grafted the motherboard/PS portion of an
> ATX PC case on the back. It looks cobbled together, but you won't see the
> PC part of the case when it's all done. I've got a serial port driven VFD
> and keypad input module I hope to use to replace the Sony VFD and hook into
> the existing keys on the front of the unit.
>
> When it's done, it ought to look just like a piece of audio equipment. The
> downside is that it will draw a lot of power when it's running. It will
> also have only S-video out, but that's o.k. because I don't have a high def
> TV yet.
>
>> On the other hand, some people say the old Xbox works very well
>> for this task. I might want to look for some 2nd items.
>
> True, but I've already got all the parts for mine and I'm having fun hacking
> up the cases to make this look nice.
>
>> But I am eying something like Asus EEEbox. It looks like Wii
The two motherboards that I've used were the J&W 708G-SP128MB ($174CDN) and
the Jetway NC62K GF8200 ($164CDN).
The Jetway includes and DVI to HDMI adapter, which sticks out a bit so it's
not the best for certain installations.
The J&W uses a SODIMM instead of a regular DIMM, something to watch out for.

The case I've used both times is the Apex MI-008 which includes a 250W power
supply ($47CDN).
I use an AMD X2 5200+ for the processor ($75CDN).
Then there's the HD ($56), memory ($40-$50), BluRay reader ($132CDN), etc...

Overall, the cost of the box is under $550 for hardware only, add OS +
CoreAVC or Cyberlink + remote (at least MediaPortal is free!). It's more
expensive than the eeeBox but it has way more horsepower.

As Jake Anderson pointed out, there's the Intel Atom motherboard, and it is
really inexpensive. The difference between the eeeBox and the Intel
motherboard though is that the eeeBox has a DVI connector, whereas the Intel
board only has VGA. The boards play SD content without a problem, 720p is
OK, but they can't do 1080P.

As for the Wii, my kids really enjoy the few games that we have. I wouldn't
trade the Wii for any other console due to the fact that the controls are
more natural than the ol' thumb-sticks. There also seem to be more
younger-kid friendly games out there as well.
> I used Winamp Remote to do this (looks like some flavor of Orb). It
> a dedicated PC for the living room out of old PC parts.

They say Xbox 360 works well. PS3 can do it as well but not as good as Xbox
360.

But I agree that maybe a dedicated PC would be easier. The problem is that
they are not so cute as Wii. Xbox360 and PS3 have the same problem with PCs
or Macs in terms of high power consumption. Wii consumes much less power
than Xbox 360 and PS3.

On the other hand, some people say the old Xbox works very well for this
task. I might want to look for some 2nd items.

But I am eying something like Asus EEEbox. It looks like Wii actually. But I
am not so sure if it is powerful enough with the Atom CPU. It runs XP so
software is quite easy to configure.

I agree that EEEbox is not cheap. Maybe if they take out Windows XP,
the price will be a bit cheaper. Still I would not say it is too expensive.

Take note EEEbox has a faster CPU (N270), not the N230 used
in the board you mentioned. Most of other Atom based desktop
comes with N230. N270 is dual core. It is not as powerful as
the N330 used in the D945GCLF2 board though.
http://www.intel.com/products/desktop/motherboards/D945GCLF2/D945GCLF2-overview.htm

> still it will be much better when they marry it up to a chipset that is
> equally as power friendly as the cpu.

That is true. I think they will. In that case, I expect many other equipment
to use Atom instead of ARM9/ARM11 class processor for Windows CE,
Windows embedded and Linux.

> then you can do something like this
> is not expandable. The battery life (2 AAA rechargeable)
> is still good.
>
> 2. HP Jonarda 545 PocketPC 2002 bought in year 2002
> I was using it as a PDA and even bought a Wifi adapter for it
> but I did not use it so often as I bought a notebook (Dell 600M)
> for study. Later I gave it to my wife as a Electronics dictionary
> using MDICT. Now she has the Nokia E71 and I am not so sure
> how to effectively use it again. The build quality of the PDA is really
> good and the rechargeable battery still can last one week or
> more with casual use. The interface seems to be faulty
> now so I could only use IRDA as the transfer method
> if I need to use ActiveSync. The charger works fine.
>
> 3. An old NEC MobilePro 400 Windows CE 1.0 Handheld
> with 2.0 ROM upgrade, bought 2nd hand in 2001 (for about
> US$35), just curious about Windows CE at that time. Microsoft
> was rather stupid to ask the user to use double click on handheld
> PC. The battery life (2 AA rechargeable) is quite bad but it
> comes with an AC adapter along with the docking station
> (serial port). It has also an PCMPIA card slot but PCMCIA
> CF card adapter does not work. It is also too slow to be
> useful. So I will only keep this as a collectible.
>
> 4. The Dell 600M (bought back in 2003) now has a problem.
> It seems to me that the motherboard keyboard controller
> is faulty now since it keeps sending random keys.
> I tried to remove the keyboard connection and use
> an external USB keyboard without success. It
> is running Windows XP and Fedora Core 6 but I
> could not effectively disable the on-board keyboard
> controller.
>
> 5. There are many other small items, like an old Ethernet
> ADSL modem (Speedstream 5260), SoundBlaster Life
> sound card, and some of the old items that I could not
> use any more: two AGP graphics card, 2x512M DDR RAM
> now that my old desktop is dead (Gigabyte motherboard
> NF3 based chipset with ADM Atholon 64 3000+, most
> likely the motherboard is faulty), a DVD writer. I also
> got an extra PCI Wireless card. I was thinking of getting
> a 2nd hand motherboard+CPU to revive the PC but
> later decided against the idea as new sets are also
> very cheap. The missing item is a home server which
> match the 42 inch HD Ready LCD TV, not one more
> ugly PC. Maybe Wii can act as the home server but
> it seems not powerful enough. An XBOX 360 would be
> a better bet. Or maybe an ASUS EEEbox will do.
>
> 6. I also got the extra Linksys WRT54G from my brother
> (I gave him my Linksys USB Wifi Adapter). Not so
> sure how to use it effectively.
>
> 7. And then I have the old cell phones like Nokia 8250
> and Nokia 3350. I'd like to use the Nokia 6280 my wife
> was using before she got the E71. Somehow it does not
> like my SIM card. It reports "SIM card rejected". The same
> SIM card works with other phones at home including the E71,
> just not the Nokia 6280. And other SIM cards works with the
> Nokia 6280. Unfortunately I am using the prepaid
> service and they do not allow number retention for
> prepaid customers. Take note we do not have locked
> phones here in Singapore so it is not an issue with
> locked phone.
> How do you do Media Streaming through Wii? Do you
> use the free service from Orb? I am not comfortable with
> services like Orb.

I used Winamp Remote to do this (looks like some flavor of Orb). It worked
fine for streaming audio, but I didn't like the user interface very much, so
I stopped doing this. I'm currently working on building a dedicated PC for
the living room out of old PC parts.

>> You have to note that it's not a machine that hard core gamers will
>> appreciate as much as an Xbox 360 or even a PS3. There is no high
>> definition video output.
>
> Yeah, that is a disappointment.
>
> My friend got a PS3, the graphics are superb. It is also a very
> good BlueRay player. He is not a gamer either so he does not
> want to buy any games for PS3. Still he can download some
> game demos for free.

BlueRay is definately a plus for the PS3, especially with the high cost of
current stand-alone BlueRay players.

> I do not see game demos for Wii, I only find NDS demos.
>
> I tried out some Flash based free games for Wii but I
> have yet to find a good one.
>
> Wii does not even play DVD. But this is not a problem
> for me. I have a Philips DVD player (capable of Divx)
> as well but I seldom use it as I do not really rent
> DVDs or buy DVDs.

DVD players are so cheap these days, I don't think this is a problem. Cheap
ones are "everywhere" in the US for $30 USD or less.

>> The controllers may be easy to learn, but I don't
>> think they're precise enough for hard core gamers, who are
>> used to dozens of buttons and control sticks on a more
>> ergonomic controller. To them, the blocky Wiimote is likely to
>> be considered a toy. Turn the Wiimote sideways
>> and it's direction control (digital) and a/b buttons reminds
>> you of the original NES, not a 21st century hard core gaming
>> machine.
>
> How about the Classic controller? Maybe Logitech or other
> companies can come out some good solutions later.

We don't have any Classic controllers since we have not bought any classic
games which would use them. Also, we have several GameCube controllers,
which work for GameCube and some of the classic games that you can download.
Compatability with GameCube games is a plus since those can be found cheap
these days.

> There are quite some plastic only Wii accessory (kind of
> Wiimote adapters). Not so sure if I am going to buy any
> of them. So far, I am enjoying Wii Sports.

I don't have any of these either. They don't appear to be necessary for
most games. Mario Kart comes with a plastic steering wheel, but people I've
talked to say that's not really necessary either.
> a tiny apartment sized living room if you're playing any type of Wii game
> which encourages large movements (like the Wii Sports games which come with
> the Wii console). I've heard reports from co-workers about flying Wiimotes
> (forgot to fasten the wrist strap) and Wiimotes hitting other people in
> heated Tennis matches. But our house hasn't had any such incidents yet.
>

So far we have no accident with Wiimotes. But once my Numchunk
controller did fly away from me when I was playing Wii Sports Boxing game.
Since Numchunk is always attached to the Wiimote, it is not that
dangerous but still we need to be careful.
>>Do you have a Wii and what do you do with it?
>>Do you like it?
> Love my Wii, my daughter plays Wii fit as does my partner and I, we all
> play Mario Kart (which is *very* addictive when played against other
> people).
>
> It's not so much a graphics engine as a PS3 or XBox 360 but the
> gameplay more than makes up for that. In fact it's getting more use than
> my PS2 ever did.

The Wii is a system that my wife and kids, all the way down to our 7 year
old, love to play. The controllers are easy enough to learn that they can
pick them up and almost immediately start having fun.

The online store is a neat idea, with lots of classic NES, SNES, and etc.
games available for purchase by downloading. The Wii will also play
GameCube games if you plug in GameCube controllers (open the door on the top
to reveal the sockets), so you can buy cheap games at the used game stores.
We have not done much of this since we already have a N64 and GameCube at
home, so we have enough "classic" games to keep us happy.

The web browser, a ported version of Opera, is adequate for casual web
surfing on the living room TV, but it's not too good at delivering all forms
of streaming content. The video streaming isn't quite up to snuff (hulu.com
won't work). It's good enough for YouTube, but not much else. Audio
streaming is o.k. but not stellar. I don't think it supports more than
regular stereo sound.

You have to note that it's not a machine that hard core gamers will
appreciate as much as an Xbox 360 or even a PS3. There is no high
definition video output. The controllers may be easy to learn, but I don't
think they're precise enough for hard core gamers, who are used to dozens of
buttons and control sticks on a more ergonomic controller. To them, the
blocky Wiimote is likely to be considered a toy. Turn the Wiimote sideways
and it's direction control (digital) and a/b buttons reminds you of the
original NES, not a 21st century hard core gaming machine.
