Actually, if you already have the PIC18F2550 and 24LC512, which count about 20-30% of the total material cost, the low cost "ICKCB0703 - CB0703 Electronic Components Kits without U1, U3, U4" is not a bad deal at all.

There are many people seems really enjoy the process of do-it-yourself. We do see some of them came back buy more CB0703 kits once they succeeded on the first run. It is quite interesting Massachusetts and Texas are the top two states on our CB0703-DIY-kits customer list.
> What's the total parts cost per programmer?
I don't know. I have most of the parts in stock except for the PICs
OT : This label is for posts that are completely off the topic of PICs and
AD : This label is for posts advertising a commercial product or service
> What clock[s] are you using? If using timer1 OSC you might
> encounter
> problems when debugging. I've come across some small
> issues with using
> the ICD2 and sleep/wake-up-ISR on T1OSC overflow. I
> didn't have time to
> figure out exactly if it was my problem or the ICD2's
> problem, but
> switching to a normal programmer versus a debugger fixed
> the problem for
> me.
> I've come to determine that the debugger isn't all
> that useful for me
> once my project got to the stage where I could put feedback
> on the LCD
> and "debug" it while it's running the way it
> will be in the end product.
> If I need to debug some math operations I tend to do it in
> the MPSIM.
> > I've added a sleep instruction and wake on getting
> something hitting the RCREG (added the autowake on baudcon),
> and it does sleep, and it does wake up when I send it a
> character. Whats strange is that when I drop into a timing
> loop, it appears to hang UNLESS I break during debug, then
> start it again, it runs fine..does the delay, goes back to
> sleep.
> >
> > Note: without the sleep and wake issue, the loop runs
> fine (its in the interupt section, just a seconds based
> counter...count for 5 seconds then go back to sleep).
> >
> > Its not that the code isnt cycling after the wake,
> because I do a number of things before dropping into that
> loop, and I turn on an LED to show that I've entered it.
> >
> > So in debug, single stepping, etc it appears to work
> fine, but in realtime, something is amiss....
> >
switching to a normal programmer versus a debugger fixed the problem for
me.
I've come to determine that the debugger isn't all that useful for me
once my project got to the stage where I could put feedback on the LCD
and "debug" it while it's running the way it will be in the end product.
If I need to debug some math operations I tend to do it in the MPSIM.
>
> Note: without the sleep and wake issue, the loop runs fine (its in the interupt section, just a seconds based counter...count for 5 seconds then go back to sleep).
>
> Its not that the code isnt cycling after the wake, because I do a number of things before dropping into that loop, and I turn on an LED to show that I've entered it.

Greeting Wouter,
You bring up a very good thought, we are doing just a bit more than that ('one free per order'): no matter customer order other parts or not, they will get the CB0703 promotion deal before the US labor day. Actually, there are people actually just want the PCB, I don't know why.

(I knew some of the customer actually have most of the CB0703 SMD components in stock in-house, others might just want to take a look. I was told there are customers actually bought 5 to 6 sets of the CB0703 component kit every time, put them together and market them at the local market. This seems a very brilliant idea to me.)

Another possibility I can imagined is: maybe the customer use it for other purpose rather than the PICKit2.
It is a matter of fact, you can do many things with the PIC18F2550 USB function, and the CB0703 have many hardware design can be re-used for different applications.

The initial idea of this promotion is for the beginners who never tried SMD technology before, and they count about half of the CB0703 customers. The promotion makes it possible for beginners getting the PCB at low price first when they are not so sure about how to handling the SMD technology.

Once those beginners get used to the SMD technology (the tricks are: you need good flux and fine solder/solder-iron tips for manual assembly), we were told they love the SMD technology.
Here is a pdf version of the assembly guide which shows how you can accomplish the mission step by step:

> Thanks for the advise, and you are more than welcome to contribute to the brain-storm.

As for the price: you are not actually selling the PCBs for $.01 each,
(for good reason, otherwise I would buy 1000 and start reselling them
for more). The more honest way to advertise your offer would be 'one
free per order'.

As for Shipping/Handling fees (for internet shops): most customers
understand that a shop needs to a margin on products, but don't realize
that an order itself has certain associated costs, like bank fees,
administration, handling. Those cost can of course be included in the
per-product margins, but that would favor small orders at the expense of
large orders. So charging a fixed fee is a simple an reasonably accurate
way to be fair to all customers.

Contrary to what most customers expect driving to the shop and picking
up the goods does not mean that the S/H fee should be reduced to
nothing: only the shipping costs are eliminated, and the handling will
often take *more* time than for a standard (postal delivery) order. So
to be fair the S/H fee for pick-it-up orders should probably be higher....
> Pick up service is not available at this moment, however we can get this resolved with either one of the following approaches:
> 1. If you can mail a self-stamped envelope to us, then you don't have to pay the shipping. Regarding to the handling cost, if you are ok without all the necessary documents (since you can print your own copy from our web site anyway) you can lower some of the handling cost. This will save you about $4 on the one piece of CB0703 promotion deal.
>
> We have to pay the people who handling all the orders anyway, so there is always something there must be covered.
>
> 2. Since tomorrow is MA's tax free day, I knew some of our guy will have a big shopping in Dartmouth mall. If you don't mind we can set up and let one of our guy meet you and deliver your order at the "radio shack shop" in Dartmouth mall or Wal-mart at Dartmouth. This is a one-time only service. This solution will save you the same as the first one.
>
> Feel free to contact me off list (by phone or email) and let me know which one will work for you.

Greeting, Adam,
Thanks for the advise, and you are more than welcome to contribute to the brain-storm.
It is the open-mind and listening to customer feedback making us unique on technology and service.

As of your recommendation on prepaid self-addressed shipping method, we are actually doing this since the beginning of BB0703 (sept-2007), please see the following quote from our web:
http://www.auelectronics.com/System-PICkit2.htm
"Note: If you prefer using your own shipping account/method or if you arrange a pre-paid self-addressed envelope (Fedex, UPS, USPS, DHL, etc), there is no surcharge for shipping. Please contact us for order information."

Actually many PIClisters here contributed a lot on how to get the best deal from CB0703/BB0703. People's advise generate the "ICKCB0703" and "Combo0703-PP"; both are among the top 3 picks. And those are the things we will never figured it out without many inputs from you guys.

Our Shipping and handling cost has been set up and unchanged for almost 1 year. While the post office increased shipping rate twice (for more than 40% average) in the past 5 month, it is actually very hard to keep our current shipping and handling fee unchanged. It will be heavily affected if the post office increase the post fee for another 30%.

You calculation of 800% just simply ignored the labor fee here in the USA and assume there will be no technical support thereafter. And since there is no free lunch in USA, you got to pay every single people who works for you at least the minimal salary government regulated. Most of the industry people might already know that the technical support probably cost 10 times more than the bill of material itself. We cannot ignore the customer service no matter how.

Au Group Electronics cares about our customer, for us, the capability of technical support is the key to earn business. That's why I see many people take our product and service repeatedly even though our price isn't the lowest, because they know, when they got a issue, there will be support from Au Group Electronics.

Customer choose our product not just because of the good design, or just because the good quality, or just because ease of use, but also the best technical support. Some of their feedback have been posted here (including people from Australia, south Africa, etc):
http://www.auelectronics.com/CustomerComments.htm

Basically, we respect customers because they all have their own right to decide which product they like the best and go with the best deal they find. No doubt their decision are always right for their situation.

As I told our local Adam (Field) in another PIClist email, you can use prepaid self-stamp envelop and authorize us shipping without all the necessary support documents, it will save the shipping cost and part of the handling cost, on the one piece of CB0703 deal case, you will save about US$4.

Everyime I see AuElectronics I get the impression that you're in
Australia! Even if you were in Australia, you can send the PCB to the
US via envelope with first class mail for [AUS] $2 (assuming it's
under 50g, 1.7oz, which it should be). Customs documentation can take
some time if you've failed to streamline the handling process, and I
could see why you might charge large S&H rates for international
orders.

But given that you're in the US, shipping to the US, you don't even
have customs documentation to worry about, and a first class envelope
with a PCB inside costs a mere $0.42 [USD]. If the envelope was an
expensive envelope with your return address pre-printed then maybe the
shipping and packaging would cost $1.

This leaves $7 for handling.

You are doubtless aware that a lot of people are unhappy with EBay
sellers and other sellers who count S&H as a profit source, and for
that reason you might want to take action now and charge a flat
handling fee, and estimate the actual postage rather than simplifying
it as a flat rate for everyone. Most people would suspect a business
of this practice when S&H is 800% greater than the cost of the product
they're buying, even on sale. Most places now simply charge postage,
and build the handling fee into the product cost - and customers
appear to appreciate that.

Far be it from me to tell you how to run your business, of course - I
would not be surprised if your S&H costs were actually $8 for a small
PCB - I've known many businesses with expensive and/or inefficient
shipping departments. As you grow you may want to look into
optimizing that - it's obvious that Mike went so far as to place the
product in his cart before canceling the order, and therefore you've
already lost one customer due to what he felt were extraordinary S&H
costs. You're lucky he decided to bring it up with you - most
customers will simply leave without telling you why they didn't buy
your product.

Perhaps you could offer this PCB for free (given that $0.01 is close
to free) if customers send a SASE - then handling would be next to
nothing - you receive the SASE, place the PCB inside, seal it and send
it. It would take at most 1 minute per order, and you wouldn't have
to worry about verifying and transfering funds, writing addresses,
paying postage, etc. You could also still charge a penny, and they
could send it in their order envelope.

This would be exactly the same as your current offer, unless you
profit from the S&H (ie, you're selling S&H as a product, it's not
merely to cover the incidental costs to fulfilling an order)
> Feel sad if you feel that way. I should have marked it as "shipping and handling not included" (which seems apparently to most of the people) to make it more clear. And a US $8 shipping and handling fee is not so expensive if you count today's high cost of material (gas, paper, etc, everything seems doubled its price in the past six months) and labor fee in the US.
>
> And since you have to pay shipping and handling anyway, the 1 cent /PCB is definitely a good deal, and I personally feel sorry it will be ending soon.
>
> Plus, what you are going to receive is more than just the PCB itself, it also includes a schematic, a step by step assembly guide and a BOM form. It is actually still a good deal if you count all these service even with the shipping and handling cost.
> Very misleading when you charge $ 8.00 for shipping a board that
> should cost approx $ 1.00 so why don't you just say that the board

Processor is the 18F4321

I've added a sleep instruction and wake on getting something hitting the RCREG (added the autowake on baudcon), and it does sleep, and it does wake up when I send it a character. Whats strange is that when I drop into a timing loop, it appears to hang UNLESS I break during debug, then start it again, it runs fine..does the delay, goes back to sleep.

So in debug, single stepping, etc it appears to work fine, but in realtime, something is amiss....

>
> And since you have to pay shipping and handling anyway, the 1 cent /PCB is definitely a good deal, and I personally feel sorry it will be ending soon.
>
> Plus, what you are going to receive is more than just the PCB itself, it also includes a schematic, a step by step assembly guide and a BOM form. It is actually still a good deal if you count all these service even with the shipping and handling cost.
